Near Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford 😭. Literally for a few seconds before realising.

They are coming for me aren't they.....

Probably, I’ve had a few, not near Westfield as I’m in Yorkshire, but my point being it’s quite easily done sadly. I live off a main road and there’s a bus lane, I know it comes into operation at a certain time but mindlessly I decided to drive in it the other day 🤦🏻‍♀️ they’re annoying but not the end of the world, no pints go on your license x

Dutchhouse14 · 23/06/2025 10:26

I did this by accident in unfamiliar place, following sat nav turned into a road that was for taxis and buses only and realised a fraction of a second to late to safely stop turning in. Was caught on camera and fined.

It's so maddening. Well I've been driving for nearly 40 years. 2 parking tickets and 1 warning letter for going 33 in a 30 zone. And now this.

Not too bad I suppose.

I once drove through a bus gate in a sat nav induced nightmare. £35 later!

Yeah I got dinged once for pulling into the bus lane to let an ambulance past. C'est la vie. They had me bang to rights so I paid up.

I would have contested that one with them. Especially if you had nowhere else to go. Friend's husband is a bus driver and he accidentally went through a bus lane in his own car. He told them he forgot he wasn't in the bus and they let him off the fine.

SarfLondonLad · 24/06/2025 07:27

Did this in Reading early one morning. Nothing happened.
(BTW Reading council, your bus lanes are appallingly badly signposted!)

A stupid thing is that when I was a driving instructor in south London, we had to teach pupils to drive in bus lanes when it was allowed, because of the rule of generally keeping to the left, and people could fail tests for not doing this. I loathed having to teach this; I thought it was a lot of effort to decode bus lane signs, for someone new to driving; far simpler to say “never use bus lanes”. It’s often impractical to do so anyway, because of parked cars (often allowed when a bus lane is not operational), and there’s no point when there’s a bus ahead of you.

Soon after the stupid 20mph zones came in on what used to be main roads, I drove in a bus lane when it was allowed, dead on 20mph. I was overtaken by a bus. The irony! 😆

forgot he wasn’t in a bus? Lucky they didn’t up it to driving without due care and attention!😂

DH got caught out by a bus lane somewhere near Cambridge station even though he’d been warned about it.

Yeah I was amazed he got away with that one too! 😂 He was only in the bus lane for a very short amount of time because it was an exit just for buses and taxi's but still....

LasVegass · 24/06/2025 07:40

Yep, twice in the past year in Brighton. One was a bus lane (badly lit signage), the other some sort of road markings over no more than 2 square metres. Add to that ridiculous parking costs, I don’t know when I’ll go next. Which is probably working to reduce car use.

DS did it in Reading shortly after passing his test because they are so badly signposted.
He got fined.

Wolmando · 24/06/2025 07:56

That's what usually happens unfortunately, all you can do is watch your letterbox and pay it quickly if it comes as they are sometimes half price then

Picklechicken · 24/06/2025 07:58

Depends if there was a camera that caught you. In Norwich it’s very confusing with bus lanes right across roundabouts and I’ve accidentally driven into them a few times without realising, never had a fine.

WingBingo · 24/06/2025 08:01

I drove through a bus gate and then a significant distant down a bus lane in Leeds 3 months ago and I’ve heard nothing.

Verbizm78 · 29/09/2025 04:05

My son is a bus driver, today he drove in the bus lane on his way home from work in his own car. Only for a few seconds before he realised he wasn’t driving a bus? He just did it out of habit. The car is in my name and I’m hoping we can appeal the fine? Anyone else know of this happening and what the outcome was?

Pancakeflipper · 29/09/2025 05:57

Check the time and date are exact.
I once accidently went into a bus lane in a city I didn't know and eagle eyed DP spotted the time was wrong (should have been around 11am - said it was 11pm, well I wasn't there at 11pm, I was home in bed). We pointed out the time error and they dropped it.

OhNoNotSusan · 29/09/2025 06:02

i did this once but i didnt realise it expired, i went in one about midnight, unfamiliar city.
no fine.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/06/2025 09:17

Hold on, surely that must be an exception? It can’t be expected that you’d hold up an ambulance? I was in this exact situation a few months ago, can’t remember why the ambulance didn’t use the bus lane itself, perhaps it was about to turn right. I did not get fined but would have contested it if I had.

You can't break traffic laws for any emergency service. Why would you move into a bus lane for an ambulance? Let them use it, it is a betterabd easier if they go into the lane. Same with red lights. Never go through acted light to let them through, even the police. They can legally go around on the wrong side of the road if necessary but you can't!
