Made Facebook argument personal

I shared an opinion on a local Facebook page, going against the grain, not a single other person appeared to have my opinion.
Basically, a loud event has been shut down by the council and changed so they can’t play loud music and disturb other people. Lots of people going, lots of people apologising, lots of complaining about the change.
I agreed that the noise should be tuned down. It’s something I feel strongly about. Theres a lot of antisocial behaviour in my town. I got piled on by people that don’t agree with my views. Got a lot of abuse.
Got told I’m being laughed at and my responses were reasonable until that point (in my opinion). I snapped. I replied with a personal attack about their appearance, basically said they are an insecure with no personal identity. Fake blonde hair, lashes, looks the same as all the others. Got a rush, and instant regret. I’ve tried to assert myself and am going to come away from it now. Be kind

Essentially they played the ball, you played the player?

You won’t win online, people have the right to disagree. But you were actively mean. The only thing you can do is apologise, and don’t do the same in future.

I don’t understand that phrase

Saying people with blonde hair ect all look the same as " all the others" just comes across as jealous and petty btw. Think the majority of people have brown hair so that point is invalid

SisSuffragette · 21/06/2025 17:25

Delete the comment and apologise then block the people on the thread

I meant she has been copying the looks of everyone else in her group, so they can all look cloney and the same as each other. They have no individuality in general, and that’s just part of it

Just apologise for the personal attack, step away from the internet, and don’t get involved in an online debate again if you can’t handle being disagreed with? I mean, the event had already been closed down, so it’s not clear why you needed to argue?

ShoutOutLucile · 21/06/2025 17:28

Aren’t you concerned that you have kicked off in a local group and you could get bopped on the nose in Tesco? 😵

What’s your question here? What should you do?

personally id delete my Facebook, it’s not doing you any good, I’d remove my comments, tighten up Facebook security. Leave the local group. Change profile picture. Hope it blows over.

I don’t like noise and I don’t like music. But I do think people should enjoy themselves at events.

But what has that got to do with her opinion on the rights or wrongs of an event having been shut down?

Hoppinggreen · 21/06/2025 17:29

Not your best move OP.
I often have to remind myself FB isn't MN.
I had people calling me allsorts when I commented on a post ranting about someone running over a cat. I said that it was very sad and I hoped the cat didn't suffer but that legally the prson had done no wrong and given some comments I doubt they would come forward.
I was called everything from a "cat hating cunt" to being accused of being the person who ran the cat over
FB is full of very very disturbed people and its best not to engage.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/06/2025 17:30

Oh dear, I hope you're not in a job where your online conduct could get you into trouble. My work has an online conduct policy so I'm very careful about sharing opinions on social media that could get back to them.

The event is going ahead but with changes to it so they can’t disturb other people

I don’t understand that phrase

When arguing, if you argue about the subject, you are playing the ball (like in football). When you play the player, you are talking about them personally. One is OK, one is not.

Clutteredmind · 21/06/2025 17:30

Ok, so that’s good from your POV, right? So why wade into a big online argument about it?

Yes I have been accused of being the person who made the complaints to the council and there is a witch hunt for that person. But I still don’t care I want nothing to do with people like that

And that had nothing to do with the disagreement. You didn't assert yourself - you were personally unpleasant. It might be better to apologise.

So actually you don’t regret what you said?

Time to get off Facebook.

there’s a new post everyday trying to gather as many people as possible to support them and oppose the councils changes, and so they can have future events the way that they want

Delete your comment and apologise, that can be the end of it then

Yes I regret what I said. I don’t know if it’s getting missed and this isn’t a justification but people including them were horrible to me a number of times before I stooped to their level, and I’m not proud of it

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 21/06/2025 17:36

For someone who wants "nothing to do with people like that" you're getting very involved. You need to step away from it. People know who you are.

Horrible to you disagreeing? Or horrible to you insulting how you look?

Helpmeplease2025 · 21/06/2025 17:37

I don’t understand why you’ve posted here, as you don’t seem to be sorry about what you’ve said, you seem unrepentant, tbh

Noshadowsinthedark · 21/06/2025 17:37

You have had good advice, which is to delete the comment and apologise for being unpleasant about their personal appearance.

At the end of your post you put ‘Be kind’, which is exactly the approach you should take.

Remove yourself from the situation.

Helpmeplease2025 · 21/06/2025 17:37

And tbh, you are ‘the people like that’

Yes but they might want something to do with you.
