What things are considered trashy if you’re poor but not if you’re wealthy?

As someone who has been both, I am intrigued to hear what people think!

OP posts:

The upper classes don’t have lots of expensive tech in the house though. They’d regard that as flash and vulgar

Different tech. Remote irrigation systems, security, electric gates to access the half mile driveway, Tesla, ride on mower etc.

But I don't see why they wouldn't have the latest gaming systems and souped up graphics PCs, and iPads/iphones. I'm in expensive houses quite frequently for work, the rich aren't immune from giving into screen time to keep the kids quiet, it's just more acceptable because the parents are 'busy' working in their important job instead of watching TV.

ittersbitters · 21/06/2025 17:03

Posh people really don’t have large TVs though. It’s considered flashy and vulgar to do that

They do

Nasty sex pond.

They really are disgusting.

@ARainyNightInSohoThe OP asked about wealthy people not posh people, or am I separating the two when they're the same? 🤔

ittersbitters · 21/06/2025 17:05

Being fat? At my DCs private school all the kids and parents were rake thin

I defo seen a lot of fat dads who are posh. All that good food &
wine!

Loads of rich people employ accountants and have trusts and god knows what else so they don’t have to pay tax like the rest of us. I don’t know why it’s been spoken of like this is fine on this thread by some posters. The country is fucked, we don’t have any money, they’re taking it off the poor and disabled - and a couple of rich fucking toffs have billions worth of assets that never, ever get taxed. If they’d earned it themselves then I’d have a bit of sympathy, but it’s all inherited and money made off inherited investments. It’s legal because their mates and peers write the bloody tax laws.

EleventyThree · 21/06/2025 17:06

speaking a different language at home than the language of the country you are in

Not sure if someone's said that already. Couldn't read all the responses!

Also in my experience there are two types of 'rich'.

There's the type you are talking about, old money, old houses, old cars, house full of books and tweed with overgrown cottage gardens. They prefer traditional materials, wood, brick. Have antiques everywhere, expensive labels but high quality.

The second type is generally younger, earned the money more recently, the wealth is either from the current or the last generation. They like luxury/social media influenced lifestyle trappings more, modern materials, embrace modern living and tech, large TV, open plan houses either a new build or heavily renovated, formal modern gardens with outdoor kitchens and lots of paving and socialisation spaces, more child centric, more likely to have a playroom/play equipment in the garden.

The second type absolutely uses the tech!

Kids with unbrushed dirty hair.
Kids wearing scruffy hand-me-down clothes.
Drug use.
Tax avoidance (poor:cash in hand work/rich:using an accountant to avoid tax)
Education not being viewed as important for the kids’ future (going into the family buiness/nepotism)
Lack o respect for teachers.
Conked out old car.

Tax avoidance (poor:cash in hand work/rich:using an accountant to avoid tax
One is illegal, the other one isn’t…

I think you're talking about a very small percentage of the super rich. Most of the simply rich pay an awful lot of tax. They will do what they can to perhaps avoid tax cliff edges etc but ultimately they are the net contributors that everyone relies upon.

The person on benefits is being supported wholly by the state. Fair enough, most would think this was reasonable if they genuinely can't work but everyone should be compelled to support themselves as much as possible and contribute where they can. If a disabled person comes into some money then it is absolutely fair that they use this to support themselves. The alternative is that they are basically never asked to contribute anything and they are wholly reliant on others no matter what. This isn't sensible or fair.

There are 3 million millionaires in the UK, and 155 billionaires. That's a sizeable chunk of people and a sizeable chunk of money. All of them benefit from wealth not being taxed.

BingoWasHisNameOo · 21/06/2025 17:13

I’m sure it’s been mentioned already but sending children into school/nursery with stained or bobbled clothes (I do get the opinion they’re going to get dirty/ruined anyway but if your poor you’re judged massively- even if the children have nicer clothes at home!)

Kids hair being messy, dirty faces, scruffy shoes etc the same as above.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 21/06/2025 17:17

Wearing lots of jewellery.

If you are a member of the Royal family dripping in jewels at a state occasion, that is not considered trashy.

If you are poor and wear lots of jewellery it's seen as trashy.

lolwhateven · 21/06/2025 17:17

Working very very part time, lifestyle largely directly funded by taxpayers, staying for free in government-managed housing. Trashy if poor, classy if you wear a crown

@ARainyNightInSohoThe OP asked about wealthy people not posh people, or am I separating the two when they're the same? 🤔

The OP said ‘wealthy’, but it’s not clear he or she grasps that some things done by certain kinds of wealthy people are absolutely considered as ‘trashy’ as if they were poor — as indicated by frequent sneers at new money on Mn.

Chip butties.

It’s a sin for anyone in any situation to consider a chip butty ‘trash’. They’re in my top ten dinner choices.

ARainyNightInSoho · 21/06/2025 16:51

Of course drugs and neglect are trashy whoever does it. That’s the whole point of this thread

I beg your pardon 😳

What about morality though?

Laws are kind of bollocks when they’re made by rich people for other rich people.

coxesorangepippin · 21/06/2025 17:41

Driving an old knackered car

Fraying carpets

Never going on holiday abroad

Helpmeplease2025 · 21/06/2025 17:41

Not working

coxesorangepippin · 21/06/2025 17:42

I can't imagine anyone above MC ever eating or really saying the words 'chip butty'

They used to be a quid up Harle Syke in the 90's

coxesorangepippin · 21/06/2025 17:43

Honestly is anyone actually really wealthy/old money driving a Tesla?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/06/2025 17:44

Letting your children run riot in a restaurant and scream.
Loud people outcompeting each other for attention with shouting in restaurants or pubs.
Getting so drunk you have to be kicked off a plane.
Wearing pj's in a hotel or supermarket.
Eating smelly fast food on the tube. What is wrong with you? Eat at home on a table.

Why should their wealth by taxed? A millionaire is hardly super rich. Why is the state entitled to the money they have saved for no other reason than the state would like to spend it?
