What things are considered trashy if you’re poor but not if you’re wealthy?

As someone who has been both, I am intrigued to hear what people think!

Why should their wealth by taxed? A millionaire is hardly super rich. Why is the state entitled to the money they have saved for no other reason than the state would like to spend it?

Is this…a joke?

Doing drugs

Emotionally neglecting your children

Having a second language spoken at home

How is speaking a second language trashy if you’re poor? I genuinely am flummoxed

Living on an estate.
Generations of worklessness.
Sitting in the back seat of vehicles to be driven places.

Tax avoidance (poor:cash in hand work/rich:using an accountant to avoid tax
One is illegal, the other one isn’t…

... because the rich write the laws.

Why is it a joke? Do you think the government should be able to tax the money in your bank account that you have saved because some people have less than you? Where is the line? Lots of people are asset rich and cash poor. How would this work for them? In London you could own a small terraced house and be one the millionaires you seem to think are loaded. How would these people pay this wealth tax when they're on average or below average salaries?

You think you’re a millionaire because you worked harder? Or saved more? Are you that out of touch with reality?!?!

You think the current tax situation is fair do you? You’re cool with lowest earners scraping by and paying taxes whilst other billionaires exploit the system? Whatever your own situation is, everyone has to pay towards the running of the country and the current system isn’t fair. There are people and companies getting away with murder. And if you think that it’s bang out of order that poor people haven’t saved as much as you, then I hope you pay your cleaner and extravagant fucking wage - but I think we all know the answer to that one, eh?

Oh and if you’re not a millionaire and you still have these beliefs then my god someone has done some incredible time on your brain.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/06/2025 18:04

Not being able to speak English after 40 years living in the country.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/06/2025 18:08

Neglecting your children so they could be groomed up in Rotherham. Just reading a book about it. Trash underclass families who couldn't have cared less what their girls were up to. Combined with the trash underclass who groomed them.

The language thing was mentioned up thread. Rjch peoples second languages of French or Italian are considered desirable. Poor peoples second languages Urdu or Hindi not so much.

Some people are millionaires because they have indeed worked harder, took more risks and saved more. You are completely out of touch if you don't understand that. The business owner working 70 hour weeks and risking all their money on a venture should be financially rewarded if they are successful. Hell, the chances are they won't be but we need people to be entrepreneurial to grow the economy for everyone.

Everyone should pay tax and contribute what they can. We all should seek to be financially independent as far as possible. Some people are poor through no fault of their own but many people make decisions that contribute to this. Working the hours needed to maximise benefits and no more. Not pushing for a promotion or for training. Having more children than people can afford with the full knowledge this will further stretch resources. Believe me, I have not grown up wealthy and I understand what you need to drag yourself from the bottom and it is still possible to make something of yourself but there are many that simply won't even try. These are my peers and classmates and friends. Don't you dare lecture me on poverty, deprivation and the causes of it or patronise me about paying a bloody cleaner. The causes of deprivation run deep but people should be encouraged to work their way out of it and they absolutely shouldn't be penalised for achieving and success.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/06/2025 18:22

@PrawnAgain that is accurate - although I guess the slight difference is one is spending money that they have received from family, the other is taking state money -

Crikeyalmighty · 21/06/2025 18:26

@Cleanestpuppy totally - I would add in multiple relationships generally that bear kids and people shagging around.

Andoutcomethewolves · 21/06/2025 18:31

Going by many of the girls I went to Bristol Uni with, it's fine to wear pyjamas and have messy bird's nest hair tied up in a bun to wander around campus if you're posh.

Not so much if you're unemployed and on benefits shopping for prawn rings in Iceland.

You think you worked harder than a nurse doing 12+ hour shifts on a busy A&E ward? Or a single parent doing two jobs? Or a full time carer for a disabled family member who works 24/7? No, hard work doesn’t equate to more money and you’re in the clouds if you think that. That is such a pathetic way to think and yes, you’re massively out of touch with her real world. I’ve been poor and I’ve been very comfortable, so yes, I’m well aware how it works so don’t YOU dare to lecture me on poverty either. The difference between you and I is that I still see those people working their arses off and getting no where and contributing their bit and see those rich folk who work out of everything they can - whereas you seem to have lost your way. Is that everyone? No of course not, but it’s be er unsurprising that you are banging on about people on benefits. Have you seen the statistics between unpaid tax by the wealthy in this country and benefits taken by the poor? Have you? Because the difference is MASSIVE.

So tell us, do you pay anyone working for you above and beyond?? Enough that they can save to be a millionaire? Most rich people haven’t got their though hard work and success so your argument is utter, utter bollocks. You need to educate yourself.

You’re like every other rich little rubber - greedy. If you actually cared about these people in poverty you were on about you would recognise that a lot of people with wealth are greedy, grabby, and fucking over everyone else to keep everything to themselves. They’ve got some great rose tinted glasses on you, I hope they’re worth every penny.

Nothing to do with poor. If you have voluntarily chosen to move to a country which doesn't speak your language, make the effort to learn it otherwise you are at a serious disadvantage. I learned Spanish when I lived in Spain for a while.

Yeah, my dad said, "We've seen the lions, we've done the maze, we're going before he tries to take you next."

Wearing lots of jewellery.

If you are a member of the Royal family dripping in jewels at a state occasion, that is not considered trashy.

If you are poor and wear lots of jewellery it's seen as trashy.

To be fair, there’s a lot of daylight between the Koh I Noor diamond and a load of Tom from the market.

Ouchy. You know, it was actually quite acceptable to do this according to my many friends that had kids pre MM. Naturally must be spoken about in whispers now.

Hotels and resorts were all about the babysitting services and having a monitor in your table at dinner.

Not that much though.
Some cunt in Wetherspoons with sausage fingers crammed into a couple of gold sovs and some cunt in a palace with sausage fingers crammed into a couple of gold sovs. Equally as bad as each other.
