As someone who has been both, I am intrigued to hear what people think!

OP posts:

Living in/travelling about East Asia as a single white guy.

Receiving handouts and not contributing to society.

People on benefits are seen as scroungers but receiving inheritance and employing accountants to get out of paying as much tax as possible is fine.

Couldn’t agree more

BernieBarks · 21/06/2025 15:34

Killing animals for fun

Obviously Jonty has a TEFL certificate!

Cheating/affairs. Even on MN you see it, people are much likely to condone a cheating man and stay in the relationship if he’s providing for them to the tune of 6 figures and they can be a SAHM etc. On an even wealthier scale it seems rife among the royals and celebs too.

Temporarynameforthisone · 21/06/2025 15:35

Scruffy children/adults
Second hand clothes
Hair with colour growing out
Being repeatedly late for school
Taking your children out of school to go on holiday
Not pushing your kids to do their homework
Messy house
Dirty car
Poor parenting
Daytime drinking
Casual drug taking

dontcomeatme · 21/06/2025 15:37

Very large TVs
Casual hoody style clothing. Very rich celebs often look homeless but it's okay cause they're rich

I’ve been on Mn since 2011 and have literally never seen anyone advise a poster to ignore an affair on the grounds of remaining in a relationship with a high earner.

You haven’t noticed that all the women saddled with cheating men who “can’t leave because where would I live” or “can’t leave for financial reasons” or “practical reasons” all seem to be married to very high earners?

Having a cutesy nickname (or name!) must be on this list too. I knew a WC lad with a name similar to Jonty. He was a skater, he wasn't given a shoulder cuff and a 'lads eh' for skating around the half dead brutalist town centre. Bunny that stays in the summer vacation home when school's finished is not received in the same way as any council estate kid with a funny name.

Extreme sports, there's another one. Skateboarding in particular.

Yeah this fits into the extreme sports lifestyle thing very well too.

Having a run down property.

Drug dealers to the house.

Car accidents.

Debts.

InMySpareTime · 21/06/2025 15:52

Kids being picked up from school by their nanny.

Marrying your second cousin.

Taking the kids out of school for a month to visit family abroad.

People on benefits contribute through taxes too, eg VAT, council tax etc. They actually contribute the amount they are supposed to because they can't afford to hire someone else to get them out of it.

This is ridiculous!

If you're recieving benefits then the chances are that you're a net beneficiary of the welfare system and often any tax you happen to pay through VAT etc is money that the state has given you.

It absolutely isn't the same as someone wanting to minimise paying 40% on property that they have inherited and their relative has already been heavily taxed to buy.

The former scenario is just a state funded money go round whereas the latter scenario sees the state gain even if the IHT bill is minimised as much as possible.

SirRaymondClench · 21/06/2025 15:57

Is this not just yet another bashing the middle/upper classes thread? 🙄

cornywalls · 21/06/2025 16:01

Definitely new cars, people like to drive cars they can barely afford or get into debt over.
My Aunt is in her 70s very wealthy and has a N reg fiesta that she bought new and as it still works fine she sees no reason to trade. She isn’t out to look rich or impress, she’s just happy with her comfortable reliable car.

Izz81 · 21/06/2025 16:01

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 21/06/2025 12:16

Doing drugs

Emotionally neglecting your children

Having a second language spoken at home

Not sure on the last one, but having a lot of exposure to wealthy people - THIS 100% I would also add

Getting anything for free that they can get their hands on

Shinyandnew1 · 21/06/2025 16:03

Large blingy rings!

Fairyliz · 21/06/2025 12:39

Sorry but I don’t see these as the same.
If someone is in benefits I am contributing through my taxes.
If someone receives an inheritance and avoids tax by employing an excellent accountant, they will at least be providing a salary to the accountant and associated staff.

Agree. The inheritance example is known as tax planning and being canny. What's the problem if they're not breaking the law?

RedBeech · 21/06/2025 16:05

Clothes full of holes. I knew so many incredibly wealthy people at uni - parents owned castles types, who lived in scruffy rags. As did their fathers (the mothers less so).

PetiteBlondeDuBoulevardBrune · 21/06/2025 16:06

Living off benefits vs receiving money from family:
In one case you are directly taking money from the taxpayer’s pot.
In the other you are using money that has already been taxed and not taking anything from taxpayers (for ex: A received money from B only means it will be spent by A not B, this doesn’t change anything for you and me).

Also, tax optimisation is mostly net contributors making sure they use tax allowances they are eligible to: making sure you don’t contribute too much to the pot - but still contributing - is not the same as taking from the pot.
Tax evasion is illegal - and this would be judged.

I think we've found the ultimate Jackass here. He's American but the posh boy theory still stands. He's managed to find himself a (semi) willing participant from Russia, taken her to the Phillipines and now he's throwing her into the abyss with little thought nor care.

Notice he's wearing a padded helmet. She isn't.
