I am just leaving to pick up a friend to go for a swim and watch the sun come up

Was down the beach to catch this at 4am. Happy summer Solstice.

Thank you for sharing, that's beautiful. I used to live in NZ, right in the beach. I'm back in England now, nowhere near the beach! I miss it

First university Open Day for ds2. And obviously, since I needed a good night's sleep for the drive, my brain decided that several wakings and an early start to the day was the best idea.

Stupid brain.

Love this! I'm 1 hour away from the coast where I'm visiting today😄

At holiday park in our caravan. Dd2 woke us up at 6 so we’re all up. Took dd1 to the forest nearby to look for early bunnies. A couple of dog walkers one of which the dog barked at us scaring bunnies off 😅She enjoyed it though.

FamilyPhoto · 21/06/2025 06:58

I live in Spain so already had the dog out to beat the heat, housework now then short siesta. Working this afternoon/ evening.

Delphiniumandlupins · 21/06/2025 07:00

Been up since 4.30 because DH was snoring. By the time I had put on laundry and emptied and reloaded dishwasher didn't seem worthwhile finding a quieter bedroom. Also, it's lovely and cool.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 21/06/2025 07:01

I was also up early to pick up a friend and go for a sunrise swim. We're on the East Coast so we were in the sea as the sun rose in front of us. Just glorious

Lincolnshiresausage · 21/06/2025 07:11

Solstice sea swim to watch the sunrise while in the water. Now back.in my garden with cup of tea.

DailArden · 21/06/2025 07:14

I have been awake thinking since 5.30. I had a date last night, lots of fun.
The problem is he is an ex partner. He didn't stay the night. Of course he wanted to. He is a bloke!
I might start a separate thread later.
Enjoy your weekend.

RabbitsRock · 21/06/2025 07:14

MellowPinkDeer so sorry

RabbitsRock · 21/06/2025 07:18

Awake since about 6 - I’m currently sleeping in a sling so always wake up aching. Going to be a scorcher here in Cornwall. Beaches will be packed plus I can’t go swimming atm so I’ll probably sit in the garden with the bunnies & a book.

TheNinthLock · 21/06/2025 07:42

Up at 3am to pick up friend and go for a solstice swim at our local swimming lake. In the water at 4.30 am. It was beautiful!

Asuitablecat · 21/06/2025 07:44

Up at 7 so I can get ready for the gym, then exam mark all day. Promised a storm later, so that could be fun.

StupidTrolleyThing · 21/06/2025 07:44

Cat was spectacularly sick on the landing, so i had deal with that!

Crunchymum · 21/06/2025 07:47

Have been up since 6am, so not too bad. It's just too sunny for my brain. I had an alarm set for 7am anyway as we have swimming lessons soon.

I have a quick question is anyone can answer (I did try a quick Google and I'm still unclear)

How comes today is summer solstice when tomorrow and Monday actually have a minute more of daylight?

Headfullofbees · 21/06/2025 07:47

I was hoping to enjoy peace, solitude and sunshine before the day began but both smalls heard me rise and came to join. The chatter is mostly lovely but the bickering and clamours for attention can be rather draining, especially at 6am. Plus I felt like I could no longer sit in the garden with a coffee as it was too early to be out there with small people who struggle with volume control.

Happy solstice to you all!

OnionsNotBunions · 21/06/2025 07:53

I woke up at 5 and got up to water the garden in the peace and before it got too hot. It was a lovely way to start the day. About to do some ironing (again, before it gets too hot) and then head to a gym class (where it will definitely be too hot!).

Edited

Does it?! Interesting! I read today, tomorrow and Monday were all equal, which surprised me. I always thought solstice was the singular longest day though. Where did you see it?

Perhaps a difference between the sun being at a certain point in the sky and the day length? I know at the equinox it's called the equinox (sun position in the sky) and the equilux (day and night are equal length), so perhaps something like that?

BrightOrangeDahlias · 21/06/2025 07:58

I was impressed that I was up and about at 6:45 this morning - for me that's early for a weekday never mind a weekend! (DC has an early start at a scouts thing so got up with him and DH). Then I saw OP started the thread at 4:34! That's the middle of the bloody night! Grin

IHateEmptyPockets · 21/06/2025 08:01

Awake at 4.30 here. Slept okay though. Got up and took the dog out for a walk an hour later, although to be honest it was getting warmer then so we didn’t go too far. Back home, windows open, washing on. I’m slow spinning some towels so they come out wetter… hoping they might cool down the patio for a bit longer as we are south facing 🥵

SaltedPotato · 21/06/2025 08:04

Been up since 5am. Toddlers room is too warm, can't have the window open for safety reasons as he likes to climb (looking at solutions) so had to keep the door open which obviously lets in lots of light. Pregnant, exhausted and grumpy. No plans today. Upside is that ice got a washing load on the line already

It was just on BBC.

Sunrise is the same time each day but sunset tonight is 21:21 whereas for the next 3 nights it's 21:22.

By Wednesday sunrise is a minute later so exact amount of daylight as today.

The days don't actually get shorter until Friday 27th (when there is a minute less daylight than today?)

Maybe the BBC info isn't correct? Who knows!

Accoding to BBC By 4th July we've already lost 8 whole minutes of daylight. Mind-blowing!!

EndorsingPRActice · 21/06/2025 08:29

Going to see a matinee in London with my dd as part of her birthday treat so getting ready for journey in. Wish it wasn’t so hot but hopefully the theatre will be fine. Will hide in aircon whenever possible….otherwise really looking forward to it, haven’t been to a theatre in ages

Xiaoxiong · 21/06/2025 08:30

A very jolly party last night, up at 5am with the light having forgotten to draw the curtains and broken sleep thanks to Winebut it was worth it for a marvellous party!!

I will need a nap later though...

BG2015 · 21/06/2025 08:32

We’re off to the Delamere Forest to see Blossoms! Suncream + waterproof coats = winning combination 🙈
