Do you know where your passport is right now

Even if you do go and check. Kids break up soon and you don’t want a last minute panic.

I had a middle of the night panic about the dates on my ds passport and feel better for checking

New passport last month, in the drawer with husband's and ds's, although husband's was out yesterday for id verification for his mum's estate. Not going abroad this summer anyway but renewed as less than 6 months left and with not being in the EU anymore, that becomes limiting

RampantIvy · 18/06/2025 09:02

As DH no longer drives I thought it wise to renew his passport anyway even if we might not go abroad again. It is such a useful document for ID as m ost places will only accept a passport or driving licence as valid ID.

Both of mine are in the middle, zipped up, pocket of my handbag. Also in that pocket are my spare car keys, spare house keys, MOT certificate and car documentation (but not the piece of paper that says I am the owner of the car), my marriage certificate and a copy of my husband's death certificate.
I probably don't need to carry all this around with me, especially as I now have an ID card for where I live, but I would far rather they were close by and accessible as opposed to being locked up in my safe, which is a 2 hour round trip away.
UK passport due to be renewed in 2027, other passport, which I have been using since I got it, due to be renewed in 2030.

Edited

Wow so if someone snatched your bag, they could steal everything you have including your identity.

You are a scammer/forgers dream!!

Spinachpastapicker · 18/06/2025 09:08

Mine is in the documents folder in our fireproof box. I leave DH to look after his own. DC has his with him as he’s on holiday right now (Uni age)

I agree. I assume that @Jane958 works an hour away from home, but it is still bizarre to not keep important documents somewhere safe unless there is a back story.

I am driving somewhere two hours away today. I will have my driving licence on me of course but everything else will be locked safely away in my fireproof safe.

I don't leave DH to look after his own as he has memory issues and loses things. I still think it is odd not to keep all important documents together.

DD has hers with her at university.

In my rucksack ready to go… off this afternoon for a few days!

Seriously it’s a good call though. My UK passport expires in September (and I can’t use it for much travel at the mo); I’m travelling today on my lovely EU passport that has years to go.

You need an ETA to fly to the UK on an EU passport.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 18/06/2025 09:14

I currently do not, although I am aware of it 😂. There is a chance it got left at Vienna Airport last week but currently it is a mystery!

im quite up for an Apple/British passport office collab where all passports have a built in AirTag…

garlictwist · 18/06/2025 09:16

Yes, in a drawer in my bedroom. I also have a copy in my email so if i need to look at it or refer to it on the go I can. I got a new passport just before Brexit so it's still one of the old purple ones. I'll be sad to lose that when I next renew.

BatchCookBabe · 18/06/2025 09:19

100% know where it is all the time. DH's is with it.

It doesn't surprise me though that some mumsnetters don't know where theirs is, seeing as how you regularly get people on here saying they're going on holiday to Florida/Malaga/Crete the day after tomorrow, and they've just realised their oldest child's passport is out of date by a year. 🙄

Some mumsnetters are not the most organised of people!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/06/2025 09:22

I checked mine recently and was delighted to find €110 tucked in the back that I'd forgotten about!!

WhatHaveIFound · 18/06/2025 09:24

Yes, I fly for work so it's in my desk drawer as it's used most months. I also have currency split into plastic DL wallets plus printed insurance & EHICs in a larger clear wallet.

I keep a copy of my passport (plus my DH/DC passports) on my phone too.

Mines next to me as I'm sorting a 10 day trip to Texas. Any other time its in a lock box with all the other important documents.

PullTheBricksDown · 18/06/2025 09:44

Yorkshiremum80 · 18/06/2025 07:11

Yep locked in the safe and we have copies of the page with the photo on in Dropbox so we can look at that to check dates which we also have in the calendar for 6 months before expiry 🤣

I know where mine is but this has reminded me to take a photo of the key page and save that securely 👍

Sofiewoo · 18/06/2025 09:47

Passports always live in the same drawer.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t.

C8H10N4O2 · 18/06/2025 10:07

Mine is always in my backpack. When all the family lived at home they all lived in the safe except for when in use. I had all expiry dates on the calendar.

BigDahliaFan · 18/06/2025 10:11

Loveduppenguin · 18/06/2025 07:05

Yes it’s in my handbag where it always is…I’m ready to run at a moment’s notice 🤣🤣

For years I kept mine in my handbag, I have no idea why, but at some point it seemed OK to leave it in the drawer. I think I liked to think I was the kind of person who could go on holiday just like that. I'm not.

Ohmygodthepain · 18/06/2025 10:14

Can I also add to check any visas too, especially if you've had a new passport, as they might be linked via you passport number

(It didn't cross our minds to check this, was a VERY expensive delayed start to our USA travels ..)

AndOnThatTree · 18/06/2025 10:19

Yep, I have a drawer of important stuff. My husband wouldn’t have a clue and without me would likely be a poster of.. Going on a six month trip around Australia in 3 days and my passport is out of date, what can I do??

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/06/2025 10:28

legyeleven · 18/06/2025 08:39

See I would panic about losing my bag or it being stolen

Me too. I once put my passport needed for ID in the glove compartment of the car after it was needed, in case someone snatched my bag.

Then forgot it was there, and when I remembered some weeks later, passport had disappeared. Could only assume it had been nicked by someone at the car wash we had used now and then.

Just as well there was no holiday imminent…

Pashazade · 18/06/2025 11:12

So does anyone have a fireproof safe they’d recommend? We debated it years ago and then never did anything. Our passports are on the bookcase!

Aposterhasnoname · 18/06/2025 11:15

Yes, it’s the safe in my hotel room here in Lanzarote 😁

itsonlyjoan · 18/06/2025 11:29

Yes all 6 as we're going away in 40 days on ny hubby's desk where they have been since our jan hoilday plus we used them in March for me and hubby

caringcarer · 18/06/2025 11:44

In the fire safe. We always keep them stored safely there. We go on holiday and when we get back the first thing DH does is return passports to the safe along with any left over currency.

RuthW · 18/06/2025 12:17

Yes I know exactly where it is but it expired in 1999.
