Do you know where your passport is right now

Even if you do go and check. Kids break up soon and you don’t want a last minute panic.

I had a middle of the night panic about the dates on my ds passport and feel better for checking

Yes, they are in the safe. Checked them last week and one of them needed to be renewed. Did it online yesterday, very easy!

In the important documents concertina folder thing, in the bottom drawer, in the section marked birth certificates and passports in a passport holder. Surely if you're organised you don't need to check in a panic?

Even if you are organised it’s easy to get caught out especially with the changes to dates

My panic was because my son turns ten this summer and i suddenly panicked about the expiry date. It’s all fine

Really is though!
Lots of people will be going abroad this year. Lots of people will not be. "Lots of people" isn't the same as "everyone".

Lighten up.
It’s quite easy to identify threads that are not relevant to you.

NotVanHelsing · 18/06/2025 08:19

Yes and expiry is in my google calendar 2 months beforehand and then again closer to the date. For both passports and national ID and DL too.

frozendaisy · 18/06/2025 08:19

Know where everyone's are
We had to do the new passport thing for H 3 years back because of the issue date into Europe (over 10 years)
Passports with GHIC cards - and any currency left over in cash that we didn't manage to get into the plane charity collections
Know which visas are still applicable
And annoyingly youngster passport runs out just before 18 and there is a summer in between expiry and 18. But will look at that in 3 (2 1/2) years.

Yes it’s in my handbag where it always is…I’m ready to run at a moment’s notice 🤣🤣

This is a good style to live by

legyeleven · 18/06/2025 08:21

Every single summer there will be a thread with someone in a state as they have lost their passport, or it’s expired, or too short dated.

It’s Horrible when families who have worked and saved hard miss out due a simple admin error.

I started this thread to maybe prompt people to check, even if you are certain you know where they are and the dates

That's cade for all school holidays.

I honestly don't get it in this time and age when the easiest thimg is to just set it in our calendars.
Loss is a different thing. Never lost neither of mine but can imagine that happening in quite a few situations

TheFairyCaravan · 18/06/2025 08:23

Ours are in the left hand cupboard in the office.

Mine expires in May 32 and DH’s expires in April 33.

MrsDrDear · 18/06/2025 08:24

It's a good reminder OP. We keep ours in the safe and a pic on my phone, which I keep checking because I'm paranoid about the expiry date changing in front of my eyes😂

Comedycook · 18/06/2025 08:25

We have a safe and all passports are kept in there.

frozendaisy · 18/06/2025 08:26

Also in case of loss abroad take a photo of photo/number page and any relevant visas if in there and either keep in your cloud storage or email to yourself so if the passport and phone go missing you can log into an account from another device.

user7529706387 · 18/06/2025 08:27

Yes - I’m also the family passport admin!
I also have photo copies and pictures on my phone, just in case the irresponsible people I married/bred lose theirs on the rare occasions I’m required to relinquish possession and let them travel without me🤣
Also have all driving licences photocopied/photographed!

Laiste · 18/06/2025 08:27

Yep they're in the folder with the birth certs. They just always are. I'm really anal about it - i stand over anyone who has got one out for whatever reason with eyes on until it goes back 🤣

Im even more especially sure at the moment cos we've just come back from abroad. First thing i did back was take the 5 passports out of my bag and put them back in the sacred folder !

stealthninjamum · 18/06/2025 08:29

I have a fireproof, lockable box for important papers. It contains birth certificates, passports, driving licenses, EHIC cards and all of my exam certificates starting from GCSEs in the 80s, red books etc. I last used my passport to vote in May and checked the expiry date (it’s about four years away). I used to be really disorganised and hated the panic before every holiday that we couldn’t find our passports. One year I had to wait in London for a day to get exh’s passport done in a day and I couldn’t live like that any more.

Coffeeishot · 18/06/2025 08:29

I do yes, my dh had the same panic but he was at work he text me to look because it was scratching his brain 😀

Jane958 · 18/06/2025 08:30

Both of mine are in the middle, zipped up, pocket of my handbag. Also in that pocket are my spare car keys, spare house keys, MOT certificate and car documentation (but not the piece of paper that says I am the owner of the car), my marriage certificate and a copy of my husband's death certificate.
I probably don't need to carry all this around with me, especially as I now have an ID card for where I live, but I would far rather they were close by and accessible as opposed to being locked up in my safe, which is a 2 hour round trip away.
UK passport due to be renewed in 2027, other passport, which I have been using since I got it, due to be renewed in 2030.

whitewineandsun · 18/06/2025 08:31

I always know. Because one time I threw mine out. I hadn't checked the bag. Very expensive mistake.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2025 08:34

In the fireproof safe along with all other important documents - birth certificates, education certificates etc.

I also have a spreadsheet with document numbers, expiry dates of important documents like passports and other important information, which I have emailed to myself so if anything terrible should happen I can pick it up wherever I am (a tip I think I read on MN).

I have read enough stressful threads on MN and other media about passports being out of date or lost to make me too anal about this kind of thing.

Edited

See I would panic about losing my bag or it being stolen

I would too, my nerves couldn't hold carrying that amount of important documents around with me.

Toseland · 18/06/2025 08:42

Yes, they are in a drawer in the sideboard with other important documents. If there is a fire I will be taking the whole drawer out with me.

rosemarble · 18/06/2025 08:43

rosemarble · 18/06/2025 08:14

Mine is either in a plastic wallet in the pile of stuff/admin next to the coffee machine or in the top of the bureau with DS2’s.
Mine expires next year and DS2’s 2027
I know DS1 knows where his is as he’s in the midst of planning big travels, postponed from covid times.

They were both in the bureau - just in case you were wondering!

largeknitter · 18/06/2025 08:44

Yes, in the folder in the office.
But your thread reminds me of one time when our kids were little and your kids could go on your adult passport until a certain age.
DM popped round to see us the day before our holiday and the passports were out ready - she wanted to see our dodgy passport photos and asked where my DD’s passport was. I said oh she doesn’t have one, she’s on mine. DM flicked through and…no she wasn’t.
I didn’t realise that if I renewed my passport DD had to have her own…cue a mad rush to the passport office two hours away on the morning of the flight (back in the days when you could queue up outside!)

OneLoudTiger · 18/06/2025 08:45

I’m going on holiday in two weeks so I’ve got it out on top of my pile of holiday bits! My driving licence (and credit card) are with it too since I took it for a domestic flight last weekend. I don’t take cards out with me so they are usually flung in a drawer.
