Arrearing50 · Today 10:56
if you listen to George Osborne on political currency, he said one of his kids was accosted by a teacher about something he’d done - utterly unprofessional.

Yes, it’s appalling. I hope he complained to the head - though he/she would probably have supported the teacher.

TheNuthatch · 26/06/2025 10:46

Good morning.
What a mess Labour are in with the welfare reforms. There are now over 120 signatures on the amendment. It looks likely that they'll lose the vote on Tuesday unless they accept Badenoch's ultimatum. Media are saying that concessions are likely or the vote could be delayed. What a way to mark this government's first birthday. Remember all the things Starmer was saying this time last year?

No sign of Liz Kendall- thought she would be out regarding the welfare cuts, but no. Is she in hiding?

Just read that Starmer is tabling in amendments to pacify the backbenchers and save face.

Upstartled · 26/06/2025 11:31

Wonder if it's just the backbenchers or the new, 11500 strong, yougov MRP survey putting Farage with a considerable lead based on current voting intentions?

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/06/2025 11:39

Lib dems have put in their own amendment on the benefit reforms too

TheNuthatch · 26/06/2025 11:44

I was just reading that article Upstartled. Seems to be the first proper MRP done since the election? Labour and the tories are in trouble.

If Labour water down the bill to save face, won't that mean they need to fill another black hole in the autumn budget? What a farce.

Yes, that pound of flesh is coming one way or another.

The biggest problem is the shrinking jobs market, not only does it reduce tax receipts it makes it even harder to get those who could enter the workforce with more support, incredibly hard.

The urgency is to stop chopping the legs off our businesses with ni increases, increasing minimum wage and pushing employment rights while everything is so fragile. It's so arse backwards.

Grow business - increase receipts - growth jobs market - money to support people back into work seems like the healthy cycle and why they chose

Kill business - lose jobs - force those with disabilities in a desperate jobs market - demand more taxation from public and cross fingers, instead will forever have me scratching my head.

Arrearing50 · 26/06/2025 12:08

I agree they seem to have no idea how to assist the private sector to grow at all. You can say you’re after economic growth but they seem to simply mean whatever boost defence spending can bring so far…

suspect reform will do well as so many people feeling that there is a lack of reform in the ever increasing tax and spend spiral we’re in…

TheNuthatch · 26/06/2025 12:21

Agree with both posts above 👍
I will never understand why this batshit incompetence wasn't obvious to everyone before the election.

I was just reading Starmer's speech to the BCC this morning. He doesn't seem to realise that as far as businesses are concerned, he is the problem, not the cure. I'm amazed that he had the nerve to address them at all tbh.

Well, if there's one thing Starmer has practiced in abundance, it's putting any shame to one side as he forges on with his conspicuous hypocrisy.

Parsley1234 · 26/06/2025 13:00

The only thing they’ve stuck firm on has been the cat on private schools which has resulted in an unprecedented net cost to the government no 6500 teachers a state sector crumpling under the SEND provisions needed and 73 schools closing with all the loss of jobs and crap that goes with it. Rayner yesterday we are not changing hmmmm I think you are dear

So true. The arrogance and obliviousness is off the scale.

It really was obvious pre GE. It’s predictably unravelling for Labour.

Absentmindedsmile · 26/06/2025 13:06

Look at the damage they’ve done in a year. 4 more years of this rhubarb. Depressing.

Parsley1234 · 26/06/2025 13:15

Yes the damage they’ve done just bullshit and another war imminent under Labour fuck off you incompetent imbeciles although schdenfraude I can’t wait to see this backtrack

Julen7 · 26/06/2025 13:18

I thought I would enjoy watching Labour balls everything up but actually it’s just horribly depressing.

EasternStandard · 26/06/2025 13:24

They don’t even know why their incompetence is causing these issues.

The early dire situation means a long time to go. That’s the awful part.

Upstartled · 26/06/2025 14:01

There's an article in the telegraph today in which sources claim Sadiq Khan is using the proliferation of vandalism on the underground trains - which is easily cleanable - as a tactic to get funding to replace them.

I wonder how much else declinism the electorate is been asked to tolerate for the greater good? It's such a demoralising tale. And to what end, when the place ends up looking like a state and people pull up the drawbridge and stay home.

Arrearing50 · 26/06/2025 16:59

I admit I looked at the educational and career achievements of Starmer and Reeves (before it was clear Reeves had aggrandised her CV) and thought surely they’ll have better ideas than they’re telling us about…

probably I gave them too much of a new labour halo as they were talking the talk pre election but talk is all it was.

No five billion savings on welfare any more then. More tax rises coming soon no doubt.

Yep, Reeves has already spent it. Along with the WFA U turn which she still hasnt accounted for.

They have actually managed to spend more with all these U turns than if they had just left any reform alone. Pathetic.

Arrearing50 · 26/06/2025 21:54

Meanwhile IFS again saying that health care related benefits have surged since the pandemic, what is the plan to turn that around?

EasternStandard · 26/06/2025 22:22

God they are hopeless.

How can anyone back them at this stage.
