Congratulations to you and your dc @Upstartled . Its such a relief isn't it! 😁

Thanks for the poll, reform still ahead and we haven't had welfare cuts yet. They've been above the magic 30 for quite a while now with FON.

Thanks @TheNuthatch Celebratory BBQ incoming.

On polling, yes the FON poll covers the announcement on the grooming gang inquiry. It certainly didn't give Labour the bump - or even a nudge - that it lost when they were trying to sweep the issue to one side earlier in the year. Which was when Reform really started to seriously gain ground on them and ultimately went on to surpass them in these polls.

Even though the electorate is beginning to get some of the policy takes that they generally wanted from Labour - also see the wfa - they aren't showing signs that they will back them yet.

There's so much going on at the moment that it's impossible to keep up with all events lately. I'm completely lost on what's going on with the welfare bill, feel like I blinked and now I'm behind.

Parsley1234 · 20/06/2025 16:20

@Upstartled dont worry Liz Kendall knows all about how to fix the foundations get disabled people into meaningful work and get them their best lives

TheNuthatch · 20/06/2025 16:29

There is something deeply uncomfortable for me about the AD bill, and welfare cuts for disabled people going through parliament within weeks of each other.

Welfare cuts for disabled people is atrocious, but not a surprise. Given Labour cut their early election pledge to look after the disabled. 😡

It’s unrelated to the AD bill which has been rumbling around for a long time.

It creates a feeling of a certain direction of travel for me. We will have to agree to disagree on this issue.

Starmer the Trump whisperer so he thinks

Barbadossunset · 22/06/2025 21:38

This isn’t really relevant to this thread, but I’ve been reading Sarah Vine’s memoir and I was shocked to read that her children were bullied by teachers and school staff because of who their father was.
I think she should have named and shamed these people.

I wonder if all politicians children are abused like this - it is completely unacceptable.

TheNuthatch · 23/06/2025 09:25

@Parsley1234 I cringe whenever he pretends to have Trump's ear. He must have a sore arse with all that fence sitting.

@Barbadossunset I was thinking of buying that book. Is it good? Totally agree with you, it is unacceptable that their children were treated badly. Not surprising though when you read some of the comments written on MN about Tories. I remember the thread when Carrie Johnson had a baby.

OP posts:
EasternStandard · 23/06/2025 09:51

Thankfully even the media have given up on selling him in as the Trump whisperer.

Best to just keep out of this one and not pretend to be relevant imo

TheNuthatch · 23/06/2025 09:51

Ipsos polling puts Reform on 34%, nine points ahead of Labour on 25% with the Conservatives a distant third on 15%.
Were those figures to be replicated across the country at a general election, with every constituency behaving the same way, then Reform could win as many as 340 seats, giving it a majority of 30. Labour could be reduced to 176 seats, down 236 on last year's election, while the Tories would hit a record low of 12 seats.

Love the story about BBC news presenter Martine Croxall who corrected her own auto cue. She was prompted to say 'pregnant people', but then said 'women' with an eye roll live on air. 💪

Nuthatch - yes, it’s interesting. I am very glad that I’m not a politician or married to one!
Nowadays absolutely nothing is kept ‘between these four walls’. Sasha Swire’s ‘tell all’ was so unpleasant, not least in that surely on holidays politicians can speak freely without fellow guests behaving like an East German listening device. (Also, Sasha was short-sighted as if she can spill the beans on politicians and their families when off duty, then other people can do the same to her and her husband).
It must be really grim knowing that everything you do or say is noted down y someone for future publication, often taking liberties with the truth to make a better story.

TheNuthatch · 23/06/2025 11:55

@Barbadossunset agree with everything you've said. I've just ordered it, thanks for the recommendation.

34% is pretty high. Didn’t Labour get a huge majority with about that? Should Google really

I suppose it shows how the entry of a new party makes it harder for anyone on that % to do the same

Labour won with 33.8% of the vote I think. Obviously those ipsos stats depend on every constituency behaving the same, which they wont, but it shows that there is a real possibility of Reform winning a majority at the next election. The two main parties are in real trouble.

Very happy to see Palestinian Action proscribed as a terrorist group. I can't believe there are protests in Westminster against this. They took a crowbar to a military aircraft ffs.

In Cooper's statement before the draft being put before parliament today, she described the actions of PA as a nationwide campaign of direct criminal action against businesses and institutions, including key national infrastructure and defence firms that support Ukraine and NATO, and other military and security alliances.

Same @TheNuthatch

I have zoned out from all the welfare cuts stuff due to ME situation but looks like it’s coming back next week with the vote.

Arrearing50 · 25/06/2025 10:56

@Barbadossunset if you listen to George Osborne on political currency, he said one of his kids was accosted by a teacher about something he’d done - utterly unprofessional.

and oh look - Edinburgh council breaking primary 1 class size commitments due to unexpectedly higher numbers..who’d have thought that would happen?

just many of the parents in Edinburgh…

Arrearing50 · 25/06/2025 10:57

Did anyone see the commitment to 5 percent defence spending by 2035? I can’t say in disagree but how, how is that going to be funded….

The VAT from private school fees..

Arrearing50 · 25/06/2025 11:00

That VAT take is the new magic money tree isn’t it? The fact that they’re going to be state educating many more kids doesn’t compute for them as they can keep re-announcing the VAT take as if there’s no cost!

It’s the only thing they have left. Some measly policy that will likely cost more than it brings.

They've u turned on most else.

Reeves putting on the screws with this vote means no confidence line. Interesting to see them infighting.
