No more politics for me today. It's so depressing reading the current topics. It's welfare cuts for disabled, inflation, abortion, assisted dying, migrants, Iran. Have I missed anything?
I ache for some positivity. It's like living under a black cloud with this government. I'm off work, and it's sunny so Labour can feck off with their permanent anger and despare.

To quote Chardonnay, head in the sand, 🍷 in hand. Hope you're all enjoying some gorgeous weather. I'm off to the garden with Prime Minister Ben Wallace on my headphones 😎

Enjoy this lovely weather we're having Nuthatch! The world can wait.

TheNuthatch · 20/06/2025 10:24

Good morning.

A Labour whip has resigned over welfare reforms. At least one of them has some principles.
The rebellion could be sizeable and the tories have said they will vote against.

Afternoon. Yes, good to see that there is some thinking going on about this welfare bill that extends beyond party loyalty. Hope it's catchy.

And it looks like the assisted dying bill is also falling under more scrutiny as more MPs back away from the bill. It's probably enough for a thread of it's own and I know there are strong feelings each way. For me, this is another good in principle but reckless in reality step. Will be interesting to see how the vote lands.

EasternStandard · 20/06/2025 12:51

Interesting re welfare bill, I wonder what Lib Dems will do, should Google really

I was reading some setting up a ‘Labour 2’ headline probably won’t come to anything but that would be big

I just had a brief moment thinking some poor woman had been in slow labour for 4 threads..

Absentmindedsmile · 20/06/2025 12:54

I’m 💯 for the AD bill. It won’t happen though, sadly. People are too scared to commit on such a serious issue. Too many religious loons poking their nose in others’ business. Until they experience the dire situations themselves / family / others. See attached.

There are days I could use a little gas and air to get me through the newspaper.

I am not a religious loon, but I am very on the fence about this. I am not against assisted dying, but I don't think this bill has been given enough time and scrutiny.

The fact that Parliamentary support has dropped since it was initially introduced suggests many feel the same.

There had to come a day when we agreed on something PlutoCat 😁

I'm an atheist and previously pro-euthanasia supporter, but my observations about about how this has materialised in countries like Canada - and concern that this would be oue path in a county with a growing aging population and less and less money.

So, you might disagree with me but I do object to lazy assumptions that this is not an informed opinion and for you to class me as a religious loon.

Like I say, this probably isn't the right thread for this topic, which stretches across all the parties.

Absentmindedsmile · 20/06/2025 13:14

I didn’t say all anti AD are religious loons. But many are.

Its an empathy issue in most cases, in my view. And yes I understand others don’t share that view.

Eg. Locked in syndrome. Tony N wouldn’t have qualified for the AD law being proposed anyway, but why shouldn’t he have been allowed to end his own ‘life’? He instead had to starve himself to death. Just one story, of thousands.

Paralyzed UK man dies after losing assisted-suicide case | CNN

A British man suffering from “locked-in syndrome” who fought a long legal battle over assisted suicide died Wednesday, his family said.

Upstartled · 20/06/2025 13:16

Yes, lots of people suffering - I get it. That's a known-known, what isn't known is the cascade of unintended consequences from a major change in our society being frogmarched though parliament at speed, shedding the reassuring safeguards in the first white paper, at speed - as everyone expected it would.

Upstartled · 20/06/2025 13:19

Personally, I am pleased to hear more caution and thinking and diversity of opinion in this reading.

You also agree with Jeremy Corbyn. And Diane Abbott 😁

Upstartled · 20/06/2025 13:31

That's fine. We would probably all agree on other things too. (Admittedly it might be a tight overlap on a Venn diagram) As I say, it isn't - or shouldn't be - viewed through the lens of party politics.

I agree.

Absentmindedsmile · 20/06/2025 14:40

Genuinely surprised. A silent majority, as is so often the case. Now let’s see what the HoLs do with it.

We'll just have to see. 23 votes isn't a stomping majority. It is a smaller majority now than after the first reading, with a majority of 55.

Hello ! Random thought how many threads will we have until these clowns go back to the swamp ? I cannot wait for the day after the next election I will stay up all night to see JRM reinstated ❤️ on a side note my other true love James Norton is dating Lily Allen is this a joke ? Really ? !

I'm just here to ask about Lily Allen. Didn't she just marry that Stranger Things bloke (who I fancy madly but only as Hopper)?

Parsley1234 · 20/06/2025 15:17

@beguilingeyes separated messily

TheNuthatch · 20/06/2025 15:21

I'm really sad to see the assisted dying bill pass. I'm not religious, nor am I lacking in life experience to know what a long, painful death looks like up close.
This feels rushed and I agree with Upstartled about Canada.
I don't see how we can legislate against a person feeling like a burden, or all forms of coercion. One mistake is too many.
