I think the high for me has to be when the general public and baroness Casey were able to strongarm our cowardly foot-dragging government into commissioning a national grooming gang inquiry that demonstrates some signs that will use clear language and un-fudged statistics.

Lows, too many to mention but the worst is the feeling that worse is to come

EasternStandard · 04/07/2025 09:52

Another high on this thread laughing at Starmer in dress up

A low watching Labour and its supporters whip up warmongering support re boots and planes

Too many other lows to mention

I have to admit their key welfare policy being defeated was a high - dare we hope that’s the end of rushed in poorly thought out legislation???? We’ll all pay of course and that’s scary but this looks like a tipping point to me on the road to labour making sure they’re out at the next election.

we may be about to see the current labour team lurch to the left to regain party control, and because I cannot see how they can achieve anything else labour traditionally wants without substantial tax rises.

i’m wondering if they’ve cut a deal with rayner et al and made further concessions we don’t yet know about.

TheNuthatch · 04/07/2025 10:00

@Upstartled yes, spot on, as always. They were dragged kicking and screaming to the right side of history. See also the Supreme Court ruling.

Starmer's dressing up has been a constant source of entertainment. I'm almost sorry he's stopped. My favourite was when he had to be rescued by helicopter from a building site that had been surrounded by protesting farmers. Starmer was still wearing his builders costume when he walked back into downing street 😂.

@Arrearing50 yes, that was a high for me too. You're right about Rayner too. It feels as if she has become much more powerful lately. Harriet Harmen is also hinting in that direction.

Yes what do we reckon, announcement about the two child cap? In a rebooted strategy? We’ll see…

EasternStandard · 04/07/2025 10:08

The Rayner and Reeves thing is interesting. Markets v MPs. If it implodes well Labour did it to themselves.

TheNuthatch · 04/07/2025 10:14

Harman
Apologies, I cannot spell this morning.

I’m agog at the claim they believe they’ve done a lot for children and the nhs - nobody believes that at all.

TheNuthatch · 04/07/2025 11:54

I nearly barfed reading that interview. What a load of twaddle he spouts.
So true re children and NHS. It doesn't seem to deter Starmer from telling lies though.

Growth in NHS appointments continues to slow under Labour despite Starmer's claims of success

The government has unveiled its long-awaited plan for the NHS, promising an overhaul of the health system. But a key claim by the prime minister about a record number of NHS appointments obscures the fact that improvements are in fact slowing under Lab...

Hard to believe he can say it with a straight face!

TwoTierBbq · 04/07/2025 12:01

I knew kier should never have said "we will tread lightly on your lives". He's done the exact opposite and the poorest are wondering where the axe will fall next

I've mentioned this before but if the tories had done anything like what Labour are doing momentum and the unions would be protesting and at the very least in a vicious manner if not with some of violence.

The economy was starting to crank and improve, she should have been brave to leave it and do little tinkering.
The whole world and Europe were in the same position as us, we've all suffered.

So true.

On his ridiculous line more like stomping heavily on our lives.

Any thoughts on how a new political party will strengthen Reform? Or is that considered a positive?

Arrearing50 · 04/07/2025 14:47

Doesn’t it simply make the chance of a hung parliament even higher? I suppose that will increase bargaining power for all smaller parties.

i was listening to Alistair Campbell on rest is politics and they were talking about labour’s first year and the analysis and saying that Starmer is on record as saying he thinks there is nothing substantially wrong, except the uk needs better government…I’m unsurprised - it’s very clear they don’t have any big ideas.

CinnamonSquirrels · 04/07/2025 15:32

Yes it does. Also further polarises politics if you have Reform on the Right and Jez & Co on the Left. One step further in the dismantling of the centrist politics that have been the norm in the UK. My fear is that it feeds further division and pitching against each other. UK politics has already got nasty enough.

Arrearing50 · 04/07/2025 15:47

Agree - the 3 friends who are supporters of the new party I no longer see in real life and just on Facebook - not a great state of affairs when you can’t even discuss politics with old uni friends!

Is there a place to sign up? Not that I will ; just curious

Arrearing50 · 04/07/2025 16:01

I guess that’s not an official party yet!

EasternStandard · 04/07/2025 16:11

Thanks! Good luck to them. If there’s SM support there’s votes.

Arrearing50 · 04/07/2025 16:14

I think so - it’ll be the old hard left socialist party rebranded, in the end!
