Deep misogyny runs through the Labour Party - they've never yet had a leader who wasn't white and male - and their world view is very much about 'keeping in your box' (and just takng a bigger share of the pie for your particular box). I don't think they'd accept her.

Quite.

Burnham is currently the mayor of greater manchester. He would need to stand and win a by election, or enter the house of Lords to be eligible. Last time I checked, he was the most popular with labour members, followed by Rayner, and then Streeting.

😂 yes. I’m from near there (but moved away long ago). So I know what he does really. Was being needlessly flippant. He’s good, he’s got brains. He won’t ever better PM, sadly.

Might as well have not bothered with any welfare reform, including the WFA cuts. A lesson in how to waste taxpayer money.

Yep. The vat on education will raise approx zero funds too. In fact, it’s also costing. Will we ever get figures? Ahem FIGURES? As in DATA and ANALYSIS? Hmm 🤔

Not as close as I thought it’d be

The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill passed by 335 votes to 260. A total of 49 Labour MP's rebelled against their own government.

Poorly led, strategically inept and shorn of democracy. Now I truly fear for this Labour government | John McDonnell

Interesting.

I wonder what the government will threaten them with, surely they won't all lose the whip? Maybe they'll pick a sacrificial lamb to make an example of?

Although there wasn’t much left to the bill by then. It would have been worse for Starmer without 11th hour concessions.

I feel like the Labour left are going for it now. They’ll push through some more stuff.

I bet!

Upstartled · 02/07/2025 12:25

Reeves really does look odd, obviously things must be hard but she looks poorly.

Man, she might be. Ugh, I don't envy her. There's nowhere to hide on that front bench.

Blimey. I can’t deal with Starmer’s nasal inflections and lies

What a mess they are

Upstartled · 02/07/2025 12:31

Cheer up pet, we'll all be crying in the autumn.

EasternStandard · 02/07/2025 12:34

I just looked. Starmer is so repugnant isn’t he. I watch a minute and think yeh whatever happens you can go.

I watched it on a really big tv. Her lips were trembling, and she had tears rolling down her cheeks.

Wowsers bad day at the office.

She looks done in. Starmer is revolting though and accountable.

Upstartled · 02/07/2025 12:38

Yeah, I saw that. I wonder if Angela - who the Telegraph is claiming led the rebels - is feeling awkward. If she does then she's hiding it really, really well.

Upstartled · 02/07/2025 12:39

They're talking about the crying on Politics Live.

EasternStandard · 02/07/2025 12:40

That’s so bad. I’m really struck by how Labour have done this to themselves.

Upstartled · 02/07/2025 12:42

Bull in a china shop comes to mind.

EasternStandard · 02/07/2025 12:44

Her mh must be completely shot.

When you get to that stage it’ll be hard to function.

I never thought I'd feel sorry for her, but actually I do. It's a tough job - incredibly hard to make successful policy - and this has been a particularly brutal week.

My sympathy is balanced by the knowledge that her choices affect us all.

TheNuthatch · 02/07/2025 12:47

Starmer would not guarantee the chancellor's future when asked, and he spoke about her in the past tense. All while she was sat crying beside him. In her shoes, I would tell Starmer to FO and walk.
