Simultaneously removing the whip on 50 MPs will at least make for some more interesting interviews and the media could use their favourite word, unprecedented again.

TheNuthatch · 30/06/2025 11:58

Thanks for the link @Orangesandlemons77 .
I hope labour mps are brave enough to end this madness tomorrow.

Good on Andy Burnham. He has more political nous in his little finger than Starmer has in his whole body.

Maybe Martine Croxall could give him some hints and tips on not mindlessly reading whatever the work experience puts under your nose?

agree I saw the ‘oooh I didn’t get the historical echo’ and I thought - so we’ve got talentless poorly educated people writing key speeches who didn’t have the sense to google when using emotive and provoking language to see if there were any historical echoes.

well isn’t that business as usual for them!

I think they knew exactly what they were saying with that speech, and expected Starmer to get some 'tough on immigration' credit for it. I also think it should have been Yvette Cooper's announcement to make, but Starmer stole her thunder. Perhaps I'm extra cynical today.

Ah could be, and then they are simply playing the dumb card…they are certainly cynical enough!

TheNuthatch · 30/06/2025 16:55

Who knows what the truth is.
In his interviews at the weekend, Starmer has admitted to:-
a) Not reading or understanding his own speeches.
b) Neither he, his advisors, or his speech writers have knowledge of the most infamous speech ever given by a politician (rivers of blood).

Good morning.

Big vote today. Listening to Politics at Sam and Anne's this morning, Sam Coates suggesting that there could still be enough votes against (60-70) plus abstentions (30-40) to defeat the bill. Tories will vote against.

Liz Kendall looked really uncomfortable in the HoC yesterday. Lots of attacks from the back benches. I hope this is the beginning of then end for Starmer.

Incredible. They deserve it. For selling in the smash the gangs nonsense too.

Yeah, true. Small boat arrivals figures for yesterday not yet released, but on Sunday there were 585.

Starmer was meant to be this well versed ex DPP.

How could he say with a straight face I’ll smash them and think it possible? It’s bizarre.

Upstartled · 01/07/2025 11:28

I see Jonathan, I'm [not] an ex solicitor, Reynolds has been pushed out into the fray to take one for the team today.

So are you fine with Angela Rayner if you are hoping that Starmer goes? I'm not.

His wife is in Starmer's inner circle. She is one of those in the firing line for the rebellion not being dealt with sooner.

Well, if we are manifesting, I'm hoping Streeting gets a look in. But at least Rayner isn't robotic and might make a decent stab of connecting with the electorate. I don't like Labour but you get the feeling things are really coming apart at the seams when even their own supporters can't suffer them - it's demoralising.

Oh, I didn't know. That's interesting. What a lot of arse covering.

Raynor!! Be careful what you wish for..

😁 Maybe I'm just grasping at straws having been ground down by the by the nasal whistling Starmer.

I love your name by the way - it really captures the steak/ sausage summer hierarchy!

Yes great name.

I reckon the press flag up Rayner every so often to give flailing beleaguered Starmer a better go.

Labour's base is increasingly the educated middle classes. I don't think Rayner connects with that group at all. Streeting is much better in that respect and many others.

He really is that. I can’t see him going easily. Maybe he will still though.

Part of me hopes they do put Rayner in No10. It will hasten Labour's demise and guarantee that we won't see another Labour government for at least a decade (decade as in 10 years, not a Reeves 6 year decade) Grin
