What do you when you feel shitty?

blandana · 14/06/2025 14:17

To make yourself feel better, I mean. I’m not talking about unhealthy coping mechanisms (got plenty of those).

I know all the usual ones - exercise, contact with a friend/loved one, self care etc.

just looking for inspiration or to maybe try something different or new.

shitty shitty head, please be gone.

I try to walk by my nearest river. It needent be a long walk, 10 minutes watching it flow usually helps.

Ideally it would be a beach, but the closest is 80 miles away, so that's seldom practical.

I walk. Well, march really! Alone and ideally somewhere "dramatic"- a big woodland, a reservoir, hill, and go fast so I get really out of breath. Home for a cup of tea and a biscuit or three.
The walks where I feel like I can't be arsed/it won't help, usually are the most helpful. Hope you feel better soon OP!

This, a walk on my own in the middle of nowhere so you're not going to have to talk to or even look at anyone, honestly the best therapy you will get. Have a cry while you walk if it helps. Then home to a hot shower, comfy clothes, nice food and get something good ok the TV that'll engross you

yourefreetodowhatyouwanttodo · 14/06/2025 15:40

Lie in bed, watch Rich House Poor House, McDonald’s or a chicken salad baguette

Autotrader and look at cars I want

yourefreetodowhatyouwanttodo · 14/06/2025 15:41

Stairmaster for 25 mins
i dont trust myself to make decisions when in this mood

myusernamewastakenbyme · 14/06/2025 15:43

I sit in the garden and open a bottle of prosecco.

Rinkali · 14/06/2025 15:44

Loud music, dancing. Something I can’t resist moving to - Mickey by Toni Basil, or Respect by Aretha Franklin.

or the walk, followed by bath and hot tea, suggestion is a good one.

hope you feel better soon; the black dog is a fucker.

FinallyHere · 14/06/2025 15:48

I’d start by working out what is causing it. The remedy will absolutely depend on that. Usually it’s caused by my worrying about something that I can’t control. Just noticing that’s what I’m doing can usually snap me out of it. #letthem

otherwise if I’m tired sleep or rest, hungry eat and if craving mental stimulation do I h something interesting.

Hope you find what works for you

Myoldbear · 14/06/2025 15:51

I walk round and round the living room and remind myself of the nice stories around things in it - for example:

Scratch pole on the floor for my lovely cat.
Post card on the mantelpiece piece from my good friend.
A bear on top of a radio that I bought for 1p in a jumble sale when I was nine.

I hope you soon feel ok again.

mismomary · 14/06/2025 15:54

Take yourself to a book shop or the library and find a book to escape into. Then take yourself for a coffee or home to read chapter one.

readingupsidedown · 14/06/2025 15:57

OP I almost wrote a similar post myself. I feel so down. I wish I could take some sort of herbal supplement that would just take the edge off. I already take a few.
I did have a Magnum and that helped a little.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/06/2025 15:57

Cuddle the cats
Long bubble bath
Buy flowers
Netflix
Gardening
Drive as fast as I dare listening to TRex.
glass of wine and a guilty fag

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/06/2025 16:01

Re-watch a favourite film. I like going for walks in nature as much as the next person, but it doesn't take my mind off things really - partly because it's a normal, regular thing for me to do and partly because I think too much while I'm walking!

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 14/06/2025 16:07

Put my favourite music on as loud as possible in the bedroom and clear out my drawers and wardrobe.
Which l am doing now ..with frequent breaks .

MewithME · 14/06/2025 16:07

I'm in a kind of numb and off kilter mood today. I am not well enough to get out the house. I'm giving myself permission to do very little and watch loads of TV.

Lone parenting is hard going. I think that will be part of it. This is the first time to myself I've had for a while. I get mentally overloaded then I'm often just grateful for quiet and zero demands when I get some alone time.

It's frustrating though. If I was healthy I'd be out in nature. I've just had a few mins in the garden at least.

Wilfrida1 · 14/06/2025 16:10

Definitely get out if I can, though that may be hard when you are a single parent and don't get much alone time.

Allow myself a good cry.
Crafting - can lose myself in that
Baking

I hope it soon passes x

jimbort · 14/06/2025 16:11

Listen to meditations on inset timer. Makes me feel calm. Listened to the velveteen rabbit the other day, was lovely. Hope you feel better soon.

SilkCottonTree · 14/06/2025 16:14

If I don’t feel like going out to shake a bad mood I watch travel channels on YouTube for some complete escapism. At the moment one of my favourite channels is called ‘Chloe and sometimes Ludvig’ also content by ‘the gem goddess’ is always quite uplifting. Hope you start to feel a bit brighter soon.

EveryDayisFriday · 14/06/2025 16:14

I have a nap then afterwards a walk with a podcast on my headphones if sunny weather or to gym for a swim and steam room and lovely shower afterwards.

Sallycinnamum · 14/06/2025 16:15

I'm in a bit of a low mood too OP mostly due to a shitty end to my work week.

My Hatha yoga class this morning helped and I'm now sat watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the millionth time and browsing vinted.

I'll probably feel better tomorrow so I just go with it and know this soon will pass!

madroid · 14/06/2025 16:17

Plan a regular evening out. Organise a baby sitter, a course, a class, visit to theatre/cinema - anything that is grown up and you enjoy. Then you've got something every week to look forward to.

Single parents need time to play too.

Catsandcannedbeans · 14/06/2025 16:24

Watch Mamma Mia with a bottle of Prosecco (champagne if I’m really feeling shit) and make DP bring me fancy olives and snacks on cocktail sticks. Can’t feel bad when I’m watching Mamma Mia.

frozendaisy · 14/06/2025 16:26

Silly dancing to music that is cheesy but I love so for me
Spice Girls - who do you think you are is a great one
Dolly Parton 9-5
Madonna - vogue

You get the idea

Or get a would say trashy but some are quite good, but easy to read chick lit, so on the shelf ready to go is "Last one at the party" by Bethany Clift
and "candy house" by jennifer egan

watch a new stand up show - again comedians are personal but whatever is out new, streaming

if I feel like something more to feed my head I will pick up philosophy or art history books to feed my mind.

get H to read out the Daily Mash (he subscribes)
me and H also will happily do the guardian crossword (quick) and thursday quiz - which is quite hard but also fun to read out

I also read out left hippy dippy articles to H to see him roll his eyes, this weekend there was a female writer talking utter cock about trad/radwife and overcomplicating matters which was very entertaining (well it is if you have a non-hippy dippy H - he is left wing but very much an uncomplicated geek type of a man)

I might walk to a nice pub with a weekend paper and sit quietly having a drink and flicking through, no phone, just old fashioned editorial news

decluttering helps - and this can include admin and digital cluttering

looking back over past photographs of happier days

CoastalCalm · 14/06/2025 16:29

Nap and a long bath face mask and make the effort to blow dry and straighten hair then into fresh pj’s

DaphneduM · 14/06/2025 16:33

Talk to my husband
Cuddle my cats
Sow seeds
Do other gardening
Sit in the garden by our pond and read
Reading, any time
Look at beautiful gardens on YouTube
Look at pictures of my little grandsons
Buy some clothes
Go to the library
Buy plants online

feelingbleh · 14/06/2025 16:36

Order a takeaway and put a comedy film on is usually my go to. I also like sitting in the garden when the weather is like this with an ice cold drink and a magazine. Or I scroll tiktok or play games on my tablet.
