What do you when you feel shitty?

To make yourself feel better, I mean. I’m not talking about unhealthy coping mechanisms (got plenty of those).

I know all the usual ones - exercise, contact with a friend/loved one, self care etc.

just looking for inspiration or to maybe try something different or new.

shitty shitty head, please be gone.

I watch Schitt’s Creek.

Walk my dogs. It starts off as march with me chuntering about “fuckwits and useless tossers” under my breath, but, inevitably, the sight of waggy tails and shiny eyes makes me feel better.
Alternatives are putting on music really loud and belting it out (badly!) and making myself my very favourite comfort meal. DH knows if that comes out, to give me a wide berth for a bit!

Change the bed.
Pull on scruffy clothes and get out for a brisk 45 minute walk.
Pick up any food needed for the way while I’m out.
Come back and have a bath. Do everything - face scrub. shave legs etc.
Put on a hair mask and gradual tan and put on a clean nightie.
Curl up on the sofa for the rest of the day:
Mumsnet
Youtube
Netfix
Read
Etc.
Eat whatever I fancy plus hot chocolate.

Pray to sleep well (leave the hair mask on overnight) and wake up feeling much brighter the next day,

It changes over time.

At the moment:
Stay at home and potter around
Rearrange furniture and decor
Adopt a new habit or have a change of routine
Go to bed early

Writing a diary, cuddling a pet, pampering yourself with a nice bath using your favourite products, walking in nature, putting on your favourite music. Did you struggle during Covid? Remember what made things better then if you did.

quirkychick · 14/06/2025 17:28

Having a list of things that could help is good, as you can choose something to help without the choice stressing you out.

Today, I slept badly which often can be enough to make me feel wobbly. So, I decided to potter as well. Doing little bits of things, which makes me feel productive but not overwhelmed.

I am very lucky and only feel shitty very occasionally and it will always be in the afternoon. Mornings and evenings I am always absolutely fine.

So on shitty afternoons, if I'm not at work, I make a mug of tea and have a snack if there's any in the house, and sit on the sofa and watch TV - something like The Bay or that silly show with Nicola Walker where she's a divorce lawyer, or old favourites like The Thick Of It.

I don't watch a huge amount of TV and watching TV in the day always feels like a massive indulgence - so it makes me feel better to indulge myself.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Things turned around when I went out with DS to play a ball game outside. I ended up going for a bike ride too and feeling so much better.

Exercise & fresh air really is magic.

sleep tight all x
