I feel utterly ridiculous admitting this, but I'm really scared of the storm

I have no idea why, I've never been scared of storms before and actually enjoyed them.

But tonight im really scared. And I feel ridiculous for it. What's wrong with me? How long will it go on for? How can I tell when its stopping? Is there an app I can use to see when we're over the worst?

Whereabouts are you? I love storms, love extreme weather tbh. The blitzortung app shows lightning strikes. Most are in the SE currently. I use the Netweather rainfall radar to see where the precipitation is.

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 14/06/2025 00:16

Try and focus on something else you obviously can't change what's happening outside.
Do you have anxiety issues?the reason I ask is I know from my own that I can overthink on stuff for days.
You're safe in your house.

HeddaGarbled · 14/06/2025 00:20

I think it’s the weather warnings. It gees us all up so you think it’s going to be apocalyptic and then it’s mostly a damp squib. Fair enough if there’s a flood risk or whatever but all these yellow and amber warnings for heavy rain and one gust of wind that made it over the parameter is getting ridiculous.

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:21

Im SE the thundering is extremely loud, lightening lighting up the sky like a massive ball of light.

I downloaded the app and im exactly where it seems to be happening the most.

I do have anxiety issues though its greatly improved. My phone screen keeps flickering and there's a really strong smell outside. Ive never been scared like this before.

I'm in Thanet and it's probably the worst storm I've ever experienced. The thunder was so load and lightening every 30 seconds (yes I counted) But it's dying down now. Was scary though!

WelshMoth · 14/06/2025 00:26

What type of smell OP?

Solaire18381 · 14/06/2025 00:26

I don't mind thunder & lightening (if indoors) and would rather have this type of storm than gales or snow/ice!

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 14/06/2025 00:27

Perhaps the app isn't helping and only heightening your anxieties.
It will pass op you'll be fine.

MsPug · 14/06/2025 00:29

the smell is called petrichor op it's a normal smell of rain on the ground when it's been dry for a while. It's a great smell! Even if it's not raining where you are you can smell it from a way away apparently

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:30

Yes lightening every 30seconds or so. Ive tried to attach a video. I didn't catch the super loud thundering though. It sounds like the really loud plane you get at air shows.

I am in west Kent and it’s ok here . Doggy in bed with me and just a few flashes of lightening. Where are you?

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:34

Yes its that rain smell but really strong with like a sulphur smell.

Im in Suffolk. Lightening every 30secs or so with nearly continuous rumbling. Then louder thunder

Lightningmaps.org also tracks lightning.
There is nothing wrong with being scared of storms- it's not something you have any control over, though it's very unlikely you will be affected. I worry myself.
But damage does happen. I know two lots of people whose houses were hit by lightning, though no-one was hurt. Both lots said it was extremely frightening.

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:37

I have longer videos but can't upload them

Its extremely loud, and even with black out curtains it literally lights up the room. I can hear dogs barking. Its quite frightening. It feels so close

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:39

Did that not post as a video? Never uploaded pics before

No, not a video.

GiddyCrab · 14/06/2025 00:41

Nothing in Wiltshire.

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 14/06/2025 00:41

They have to be verified first, there was obscene material posted a couple of months ago.
I've only saw pictures not video on here.

Seawolves · 14/06/2025 00:42

It's been all the hype hasn't it.

Suffolk here too. I got up to watch
it, now lying on the sofa with the patio doors wide open enjoying the breeze. It did wake my little one briefly but I have settled him and stuck a long playing story on his Tonie box in the vain hope he'll stay asleep.

Startthecar · 14/06/2025 00:42

Sending you a hand hold OP!
I don't like storms myself, I never have but I don't get much sympathy as DH and DC's are not only are fine with storms, they actually like them!

It's good to look at a weather radar map for your area and you can see where the storm is and where it's heading.

I always keep a small torch near my bedside so if the house is suddenly plunged into darkness at night ,and that's when the storms are always feel the worst, I have a light right at my fingertips which is quite comforting.

I have my phone with music playing or earbuds or even earplugs. I'm sure the storm will pass soon and everything will be quiet again and you'll be able to sleep, ah bliss!liss!

sparklychair · 14/06/2025 00:44

Wow, that storm looks very lively on the lightning tracker. Hope it dissipates soon. I really sympathise with you, OP, I'd be scared of that too.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/06/2025 00:44

We lived in little Oakley near harwich when expecting our first child, 31 years ago and I absolutely get you, OP! The storms over the estuary were like nothing we’d ever known.

Safe to say, though, she’s 30 now!

SnowFrogJelly · 14/06/2025 00:45

Me too.. thunder is really loud here and loads of lightning

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:45

Oh ok that's why it might not have posted it. I look a photo of the sky lit up. It looks like day time.
