I feel utterly ridiculous admitting this, but I'm really scared of the storm

I have no idea why, I've never been scared of storms before and actually enjoyed them.

But tonight im really scared. And I feel ridiculous for it. What's wrong with me? How long will it go on for? How can I tell when its stopping? Is there an app I can use to see when we're over the worst?

I enjoy storms too, as long as no damage. I lived in Central and South America and storms there are spectacular.

PopeJoan2 · 14/06/2025 08:58

I wonder if it might also be to do with what’s going on in the world. If you are sensitive the sounds of thunder and flashes of lightning might subconsciously make you feel as though you are in a war zone. The storm has subsided now. I hope you are ok.

Nannyfannybanny · 14/06/2025 09:01

The smell is petrichor and ozone. My DH who was a sarf London boy,has turned country boy and can smell ozone in the air before rain. We're in the SE corner nearest to France, have been absolutely praying for rain for the garden..DD was watching on radar from France. The lighting started bang on 10 pm. I couldn't hear the thunder with the windows closed. The temperature outside had reached 32c. DH slept through THE storm in the 80s.

Slatterndisgrace · 14/06/2025 09:04

You won’t be the first and you won’t be the last OP and there is no reason to feel ridiculous about it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/06/2025 09:05

France gets some belters. I remember one summer being on a train somewhere South of Lyon , all of a sudden the sky turned black and an enormous storm appeared from nowhere - seriously it was like god was pouring buckets of water over the train as the sky erupted with bangs and flashes. It was a little alarming. We limped in to Lyon Part Dieu station and stayed there.for an hour while the tracks were checked for flood water.

GnomeDePlume · 14/06/2025 09:12

@TheBig50 that is a lovely story!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/06/2025 09:13

Fair enough if there’s a flood risk or whatever but all these yellow and amber warnings for heavy rain and one gust of wind that made it over the parameter is getting ridiculous

I couldn't agree more, @HeddaGarbled, and I don't remember seeing much of it before Covid, so have to wonder if this "traffic light" thing appeals to some committee Hmm

It's not even as if we have truly severe weather in the UK ... try being in tthe US throughout a tornado or hurricane then see if it seems so bad

Sailawaygirl · 14/06/2025 09:38

I love storms but this one got me feeling anxious too! It really was lightening and thunder every 30 seconds for over an hour! The best lighting storm I've been in. It wasn't just lightning in the distance it was all around for ages. My cat was terrified but DC didn't wake up!
Hope you can have a nice lie in OP

Greenartywitch · 14/06/2025 09:39

I am on the Kent Coast and there was heavy rain and thunder lighting up the sky last night.

Thankfully everything seems OK this morning (no damage).

OrangePineapple25 · 14/06/2025 09:39

What storm? I woke up last night because it sounded like the tumble drier was on, only it was outside. Midlands.

Slatterndisgrace · 14/06/2025 09:40

Storms are avoiding me and it’s pissing me off, tbf. It seems deliberate.

Pickingmyselfup · 14/06/2025 09:48

I love a good storm but there are times I feel a bit uneasy. Probably just a natural instinct so we don't get struck by lightning or something!

FloraBotticelli · 14/06/2025 09:52

The thunder was so loud over Norfolk last night, it woke me up. We sometimes get RAF planes zooming over our house to train, and the thunder was as loud as those. So totally understand the worry. Hope you’re feeling calmer this morning!

Slatterndisgrace · 14/06/2025 09:56

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/06/2025 05:56

Huh! I feel cheated. I love a good rattler of a storm but all we got here in SE London was rain.

I do too. Not even a drop of rain and the garden needs it.

Rowgtfc72 · 14/06/2025 09:57

Not a massive fan of storms but my worst weather is wind. Same applies to both.
Ear defenders- so less scary if you can't hear the worst.
I have about 8 weather apps I follow. You get that into the ins and outs of what's happening real time you forget what's outside the window.
Real bad storms? Sit in the car. Its a faraday cage. 🙂

changednameagain1234 · 14/06/2025 09:57

Anyone got any storms at the moment?

Nothing here all night but we are in the yellow warning for today

PomeloOud · 14/06/2025 09:59

We’re in the SE and I heard just one rumble of thunder last night. I’m envious as I love a storm.

What can you do, OP? Nothing apart from distract yourself.

mumda · 14/06/2025 10:00

My mum used to tell us it was god moving furniture about making the noise.

Nothing but sunshine and light blue skies for the next week. I’m not a doomer about good weather but the lack of rain is annoying me now. I watched the weather map and I swear I was surrounded by storms and every one missed me. Tantalisingly close then swerving.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 14/06/2025 10:01

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:21

Im SE the thundering is extremely loud, lightening lighting up the sky like a massive ball of light.

I downloaded the app and im exactly where it seems to be happening the most.

I do have anxiety issues though its greatly improved. My phone screen keeps flickering and there's a really strong smell outside. Ive never been scared like this before.

Please be aware that those strikes are not to the ground. Most of them on an app are cloud to cloud.

Anzena · 14/06/2025 10:01

mumda · 14/06/2025 10:00

My mum used to tell us it was god moving furniture about making the noise.

Aw, my late Dad always said the same to us when we were kids. And we believed him!

CozyCoupe · 14/06/2025 10:07

I must be fairly near to you OP, we're in Suffolk too and were woken by it last night. Haven't seen such a loud storm for years, felt like it was right above us, the lightening was continous. I knew logically we were safe but it did feel quite unnerving, couldn't really sleep properly until it had passed properly!

Cososom · 14/06/2025 10:12

I'm so annoyed I missed it, love a good storm. Live in east Kent and our street WhatsApp was lively last night with videos of the sky lighting up - it looked like daytime. There's been flooding locally too. We were in London for the night though and all we got was rain!

Topsyturvy78 · 14/06/2025 10:18

I'm jealous we've been expecting a thunderstorm for over a week. We had some thunder this morning but it was daylight and didn't see any 🌩️

RampantIvy · 14/06/2025 10:32

I do wish it was much rougher with rough winds to.

What a horrible thing to wish for Hmm

We didn't even get any rain last night, let alone a storm.

This is worrying as Yorkshire, where I live, has become the second region to enter drought status following the driest spring in 132 years. I'm on the edge of the Pennines and we have already had wildfires on the moors, and the reservoirs are at record low levels for this time of year at 63%. Also, some of the rivers are below critical levels.

This is my local reservoir.

I feel utterly ridiculous admitting this, but I'm really scared of the storm
