I feel utterly ridiculous admitting this, but I'm really scared of the storm

I have no idea why, I've never been scared of storms before and actually enjoyed them.

But tonight im really scared. And I feel ridiculous for it. What's wrong with me? How long will it go on for? How can I tell when its stopping? Is there an app I can use to see when we're over the worst?

I also find them unsettling, it's probably some innate instinct because most animals hunker down, horses get skittish etc.

Agree that on mainland Europe and in the states you get some absolute belters, but we seem to be getting more and more extreme weather everywhere.

Perhaps set yourself a little storm ritual, reread a soothing book or have a bath by candlelight so you don't get twitchy when the lights flicker. Have a comforting drink. Stay indoors if you can.

Just wanted to poster to say how jealous I am.

Nothing better than a nice drink, lights off curtains open and watching a free son e lumiere show.

RampantIvy · 14/06/2025 10:56

I must admit I am a little jealous as well. We haven't had a humdinger of a thundertorm for years.

Agree! A few years ago we were staying on the Cote d'Azur and our villa looked out over the sea. There was a huge storm over northern Italy one night so we just lay in bed with the curtains and french doors open, watching the most incredible show. It was so beautiful, absolutely mesmerising.

@TheBig50 that is a lovely story!

Why, thank you.

He truly was a lovely man. I found out that he had passed and messaged his son (must be my age, 40s or 50s anyway) through the company on Facebook. He too was a true gentleman and remembered Storm being born, and me and my son.

Lovely people, beautiful family.

Wundy · 14/06/2025 18:12

@TheBig50 that's a lovely heartwarming story :). Although, in my head, it ended up with you and the son falling in love and ending up together!

It's difficult, but I'm just not cut out for the millionaire lifestyle.
I'm happy to wear wellies and roam across fields... But, err... Horses are big things aren't they? Quite scary and they harrumph and nod their huge heads about.
A squealing effing and jeffing middle aged woman does not high society marriage make!

Yes, they’re beautiful but I like to admire them with a fence between us,

Emmz1510 · 14/06/2025 19:58

I get a little anxious too OP. I normally wear earplugs till it’s over. It’s not stormy at the moment where I am (Scotland).

I’m a on effer and jeffer too and prefer fields and woods!

Markovenchip · 15/06/2025 18:49

May I suggest wearing headphones during a storm, when I was a child, I was always told it was 'God moving his furniture around ', I believed it too!

Im SE the thundering is extremely loud, lightening lighting up the sky like a massive ball of light.

I downloaded the app and im exactly where it seems to be happening the most.

I do have anxiety issues though its greatly improved. My phone screen keeps flickering and there's a really strong smell outside. Ive never been scared like this before.

Very localised? I'm in the SE and didn't see a drop of rain, just a mild night. No storm, no thunder.

Sayithowiseeit · 14/06/2025 00:45

Oh ok that's why it might not have posted it. I look a photo of the sky lit up. It looks like day time.

Wow!

Good hopefully it's keep the dinghies away.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 15/06/2025 20:19

I came across a phrase in either a book or a film that has stuck with me and amused everyone I've told ever since. Whenever there's thunder, just think, "It's just God moving His furniture around!" Even if you're not religious, it's an entertaining way of thinking about things 😁

I hope that the weather has calmed down for you, OP!

Flossy1985 · 15/06/2025 22:45

Never feel silly of a thunderstorm!! I’m almost 40 and I am petrified!!! I have had some serious bad instances with thunder and lightning from being a child so it’s not going to change anytime soon. We had a storm a couple of days ago, curtains closed tv up I ain’t hearing or seeing no storm!!

Worst thing you can do is keep the tv on. All electrical items should be unplugged, especially the tv and computers.

I’m very well aware thanks don’t get to my age without knowing these things, I’d rather drown out the noise thanks all the same. And as there we have no access to a phone signal using those are pointless for any background noise.

steff13 · 14/06/2025 01:54

Do y'all get tornados there, or no?

They are becoming more noticeable and more damaging these days. We had the Stalybridge tornado in Dec which was damaging up in the north West and very out of place for the time of year. Our weather is evolving a lot and getting ever more unpredictable!

FlyMeSomewhere · 16/06/2025 12:07

When I was growing up in the 80's and 90's in Humberside, big summer storms were fairly usual but they don't often happen now and so we've lost our exposure to it and forget what a powerful storm can be like.

And yes all the media sources that'll refer to it as a 90 mile wide storm from hell type thing! I follow some Facebook weather forecasters and a few of them can annoy me with their scaremongering and use of language like "Extreme storm and threat to life" etc. and then you get all the comments underneath where people want the biggest storm ever, people hope windstorms will be 200mph or that when snow comes that it'll be ten feet deep! People like that can set people on edge who are genuinely worried!

Rowgtfc72 · 16/06/2025 20:10

@FlyMeSomewhere now there's a county name you don't hear anymore!
I'm south bank, used to get cracking storms over the Humber.

FlyMeSomewhere · 16/06/2025 20:15

@Rowgtfc72 I was born and bred in East Yorkshire until I was 15 in 1994 and my parents moved me to a village in North Lincolnshire and we had a big thunderstorm the night we moved in, it was a 16th century cottage and I had a bedroom alone down a very old annex of the house so it was a freaky first night and I remember some really powerful thunderstorms in the few years I lived in that village! We used to get power cuts there.
