Most batshit thing you did with your PFB

Chatting to friends today about the funniest/craziest/omg what was I thinking things we did with our firstborn DC.

When DD was a few months old she fell out of a small ‘smart’ baby swing that gently rocked her and played music. It was a very small fall onto carpeted floor and she didn’t even cry. I screamed in panic and took her to A&E. But before leaving I took a video of the smart swing so the doctors could see exactly how it rotated and I measured the distance from the floor to the rocker so they had that crucially important information as well. At the hospital I think I asked more than once if she needed a brain scan and huffed and puffed when the nurse gently said no😭 No-one was interested in watching the video either!

my daughter cried at a show on CBeebies because she was scared of the robot in it so I emailed CBeebies and asked them to stop showing it 🙃

Itsabeautifulthing · 08/06/2025 19:11

I used to keep the rain cover on the pram and closed at all times 😬 on sunny dry days so no one would breathe into her pram 😅 I think swine flu played a big part in this 🤣

Pbjsand · 08/06/2025 19:12

I put socks on my DD inside her babygro so she wouldn’t have cold feet (which I suffer from) 😅

Laughing so much at this thread!
when my daughter was a few days old I was breastfeeding her but was so sleep deprived I bought some ready made formula for my DH to give her. They came with screw on teats and when putting one together the teat fell out of DH hand and brushed the carpet… I freaked out went crazy at him saying we can’t possibly use that bottle now it’s contaminated. In fairness sleep deprivation does crazy things to you!

The midwives explained I should keep an eye on how much DD was feeding and weeing/pooing when we first took her home to make sure she was hydrated.

Cue weeks of coded notes in my phone calendar: 2am right boob 10 mins, 2.10am left boob 15 mins, 2.30am small wee, 4.30am bigger wee, right boob 5 mins etc 🤣

I also noted how long she slept and when, no idea why.

Sometimes I read them back and recall how absolutely essential it felt to have it all recorded accurately at the time.

My daughter has an app for all this information now.

We had a script, literally written out and taped to the wall, that anyone putting our DD to bed had to say before they put her down 😂

This has made me laugh out loud. We had the same for DS1, including how long approximately each stage of bedtime should take 🤣 to my mother’s credit, she followed it (or so she says)

I had an app for this as well. I remember sobbing my heart out one night because I’d forgotten to start the timer on the app when I started breastfeeding the baby and couldn’t be sure how many minutes I needed to add on to the time on the app.

In the 80s babies got weaned on porridge at 8 weeks 😬

My 80’s babies got weaned at 12 weeks on baby rice which was revolting white tasteless stuff !!

But why is recording all this stuff important?! One of the great things about breast feeding I found was that you just fed them until they were full ! If I’d recorded how long they slept, particularly my eldest, I’d have driven myself insane when I saw how little time I’d had in between sleeps

I had fat, hungry knackers. The GP advised me to start weaning DS at 12 weeks in 1995. I did the same with dd in 1998. At 11 weeks she had a mega growth spurt and I just couldn't keep up with her. In 10 days I lost 9lb. The last time I saw my weight drop below 10st.

I started with baby rice. DS1 spat it out. I tried it and did the same. Fruit and carrot puree were a hit.

Honestly, I don't know how mothers keep going until 6 months on breast milk alone. When mine were babies the advice had just been changed from 12 to 16 weeks. I went earlier on GP advice.

I wouldn’t walk past open windows holding my son in case I threw him out! (Yes I was sectioned for post natal depression).

bellocchild · 08/06/2025 19:42

Wrapped handle of his toddler brick trolley with crepe bandage to protect his delicate mouth if he fell... He didn't - he rammed the trolley into the dustbin, upturned it, and split his lip on the front edge. Trip to A&E with his dad who held him steady for the stitches while I trembled and quivered...

I found it very hard to breastfeed as my supply was awful. I couldn't pump either but I tried, and after half an hour or so I would have maybe 2 millimetres of breast milk just about covering the bottom of a bottle. I would zealously save every drop and add it to his formula despite it being literally homeopathic levels of whatever imaginary benefits I thought it would confer. When I was staying with in laws my SIL washed out my millimetre of breast milk because she thought it was waiting to be washed and I cried.

Oh this one made my heart hurt for you!

Sahara123 · 08/06/2025 19:47

Child no1 I puréed and froze ice cube trays of home cooked food. Child no3 I found in her bouncy chair not very old with chocolate smeared round her mouth which her big sister had helpfully fed her. Both eat pretty much anything now and are great cooks.

Dollyface · 08/06/2025 19:53

We had a good morning song that we used to sing to our baby every day. The first time she stayed at my mums we insisted she learnt the song and what’s more we wrote down the lyrics for her!!!

Quartered and peeled grapes

Thats very normal until a certain age. Solid starts says age 3 to stop doing so.

MixedBananas · 08/06/2025 19:59

Was coericed into sleep consultants and drove myself mad teyibg to get DS1 at the time 9 weeks to sleep as the plan said and drove myself bananas and newrly develioed PND because of it. At 4 months luckily came across Drs and IBCLC who made me realise this is all trash.
DS2 gonwith thenflow. No issues.

I still do with 😂 not religiously but I did a mix of baby led and puree until 10/12 months

CatCaretaker · 08/06/2025 20:01

My pfb is 5 months old and these are funny. No doubt I am doing and will do some batshit things. I definitely plan on chopping every grape! Craziest thing I've done so far is probably when I called the health visitor because her soft spot was either too indented or not indented enough (I can't even remember now!).

Fleamaker · 08/06/2025 20:03

Storynanny1 · 07/06/2025 12:14

One of my sons and his wife followed a particular method with newborns which included not making eye contact with the baby after 6 pm so they knew it was bedtime …. they didn’t do it with subsequent babies.
Like a good mother in law I made no comment, just nodded and followed the rules

I remember doing this, it was in one of the famous baby care books. In the evening at bedtime then room had to be pitch black, you couldn't speak, make eye contact with baby...then in the morning you burst in, whip back the curtains and sing a song about the sun coming up. Apparently to train baby about the difference between night and day 🙄
If only it were that simple

SherlockHolmes · 08/06/2025 20:04

I still bite grapes in half before eating as I choked on one as an adult. It's not entirely batshit to cut them up, but probably better to teach them to bite them in half once they're old enough!

Me! The science has shown that babies have leaky guts and solids and water pre 6 months is not good for their gut health or immunity.

My DM gave us cows milk from 6 months. Different times they were.
Wimen used to be encourged to smoke cigerettes while pregnant and that Fornula was better then breast milk.

MrsPositivity1 · 08/06/2025 20:07

I took my PFB to the GP as she didn’t have any teeth yet. He asked me what would I like him to do 😂😂

Slept with the light on for the first 5 days we were home as the hospital wards always had lights on 🤦‍♀️

After 4 months in hospital (disgustingly prem) I wrapped fairy lights round the bedside crib to mimic the whole bright lights SCBU experience 😀 Only came to my senses when my sister pointed out DS probably felt like he was being interrogated nightly 😀

She did not in fact follow it.
