What are you bloody brilliant at?

Inspired by another post about what people can’t do.. what CAN you do?

I can:
Whistle through my tongue when it’s rolled up
Play the piano and guitar by ear (not at same time)
Remember birthdays
Balance on one foot for a VERY long time without wobbling

All useful life skills, as you can imagine.

Horse riding. Not necessarily in a technical sense, I certainly couldn’t compete at dressage(!) but I’m very good at bringing on youngsters, working with ‘problem’ horses etc. I guess something about my countenance helps them to trust me and calms them… and my balance and good seat stops me falling off 😂

Also making people feel included and welcome in social situations. Many people have commented on that.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/06/2025 13:09

Oh dear, I've wracked my brains and I can't think of anything! Well, I suppose I can write a damn good book (or so I'm told), I'm good with dogs and horses and I make nice banana bread. Wouldn't say I was bloody brilliant at any of those things though.

Might go off and have a bit of a cry...(not really).

soundsofthesixties · 04/06/2025 13:15

I can tell within 10 seconds when the kitchen timer is going to go off.

ReignOfError · 04/06/2025 13:20

Baking & cake decorating
Speed reading
Spelling
Touch-typing
Swearing
Attracting weird people on public transport

Some of these are more useful to me than others, obviously

JustASmidgen · 04/06/2025 13:22

What a talented bunch!

Finding things. If you lost the back of your earring I will find it

CookingFatCat · 04/06/2025 13:44

Cooking lovely food from anything in anybody’s cupboard without needing a recipe.

idrinkandiknowthings · 04/06/2025 13:47

Parking! I remember once eyeing up a space between two cars and there was a bloke on the pavement and he was laughing and shaking his head at me. I did it. In your face!!

Also, touch-typing, I can sing a bit and I can draw when I can be arsed.

EverythingHurtsAndImHungry · 04/06/2025 14:02

I'm really good a sight-reading music on the piano. Can't play from memory, or by ear, but show me some music and I can play it.
I'm also really good at painting my own nails.

spiderlight · 04/06/2025 14:09

This is such a lovely thread! 😊

Schweden · 04/06/2025 14:23

Procrastination!
If I can put off doing something, I will.
Case in point - I have 37 minutes now to read some papers for a meeting. I am on MN. I will still get it done though. 😳

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/06/2025 14:28

Making a good impression on senior leadership!

Hopefully not in a suck-up way, but I have a knack for representing myself and my projects in a way that means I can always get buy in or say-so for what I want to achieve.

They know who I am, respect what I can do, and leave me alone to do it :D

DonaldJohnTrump · 04/06/2025 14:31

Where does I start...

I am bigly bloody brilliant at everythink I touch.

And my bestest friend Elon is bigly bloody brilliant as well..

SleepQuest33 · 04/06/2025 14:35

KarolKickie · 04/06/2025 14:36

DontTouchRoach · 03/06/2025 21:38

Writing.
Building a rapport with animals.
Inventing a decent meal out of any old random stuff left in the fridge.
Mixing cocktails.

Also, and perhaps most importantly, I’m a spectacularly good shag.

Love the username ! But surely you can’t say you are a good shag? You have been TOLD you are a good shag.

sorry as you were

KarolKickie · 04/06/2025 14:39

I am good at getting on with fuckwits (at work)

and related - getting things done.

also good dancer. And have been told I am spectacular shag also (as per Roach above).

SharpLily · 04/06/2025 14:42

I like this thread because like most women I suffer from imposter syndrome and spend far more time putting myself down than bigging myself up. Sometimes it's good to be reminded that you're not entirely shit...

I am good at measuring by sight, a skill I learned due to a previous career. As an example I can look at a piece of wood/kitchen cupboard/a room and do a very, very accurate guesstimate of its size without a tape measure.

I'm great at arithmetic to a base of six rather than ten - not senary numeration but adding up time specifically, minutes, seconds and hours. Also due to a previous career where I had to add up timings very quickly.

Also good at languages. I'm tri-lingual organically and am at a conversational level in four other languages. I can hear accents clearly too. However don't ask me to understand a person with a strong Scottish or Irish accent, it just floors me.

HRTQueen · 04/06/2025 14:46

I stay really calm in a crises and can get done what needs to be done

I am very good at making a tasty meal from little ingredients, I am naturally a fairly good cook

I am very good at remembering information someone has told me in a conversation (do not retain the information anywhere near so well if I have read it)

NameChangedOfc · 04/06/2025 14:48

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius thank you for your lovely reply 😊

CherryRipe1 · 04/06/2025 15:19

I can fix lots of things as long as not too technical. Broken lamps, plugs, clothes, bags, shoes, blocked pipes, cracked phone screens, regrouting, tiles, window handles. I do get a bit lumbered with others needing repairs done though! I'm also a super recogniser, I immediately picked out a criminal 7 years after an attack. I did a test for facial recognition and did well in it.

MoistVonL · 04/06/2025 15:25

DP reminded of me of two more.

I am extremely good at making people feel appreciated and valued. People I know, and people I don’t. It seems being sincere and enthusiastic with no sense of embarrassment is handy.

I can make things in my head before I make them in real life. Therefore I spot the flaws in a plan/schema before they happen. My job when we DIY is to tell DP why he can’t do it the way he thinks he can, because the door won’t open/there’s no way to access it for maintenance/fill in your glitch of choice.

caringcarer · 04/06/2025 15:47

Driving kids around to sports events. I don't mind driving far and staying for hours.

Newlydivorcedand62 · 04/06/2025 16:31

I was going to say not much I’m brilliant at but actually thinking about it I’m very good at languages. Got a languages degree 100 years ago but can still speak both languages pretty well. When on holiday I seem to pick up the local language (basic only!) very quickly which makes travelling quite fun :)
Also - very good cook and play the piano well. I’m also quite bad at quite a lot of things 😂

PurpleCapybaraFan · 08/06/2025 09:48

I have an ability to recognise lots of songs on the radio from the opening few notes. It actually spooks me.

spiderlight · 08/06/2025 10:22

I can add another - according to the doctor who did my colonoscopy last week, I am 'excellent' at bowel prep 🤣
