Microsoft Teams - my camera has changed to default to no background effect and people end up seeing my very messy bedroom :(

I can go in and set a background effect and apply it and turn on the camera and all is fine.
However the next time I join a mtg I have to re-apply the background effect as it's not 'sticking'.
Previously it was Sticking and I could happily turn on my camera without thinking about it.
Is there some setting I can tweak or has something changed?

TabbyM · 03/06/2025 12:14

Blur, like all the background effects, will work but I have to manually apply it each time before switching on the camera as it too doesn't stick.

Just tidy the bedroom on your lunch break. If it's too messy for people to see it's not nice for you to be sat surrounded by all day.

turkeyboots · 03/06/2025 12:25

Just tidy up. I had to have a very embarrassing conversation with a young person who worked with us about the state of her room on video calls. No one wants to see your unmade bed or pants on the floor.

loropianalover · 03/06/2025 12:28

Where have you ‘gone in’ and set the effects/background that you want?

Have you made changes in settings > devices > video > video settings and then chosen the correct webcam and looked at the preview?

Tripadvisor101 · 03/06/2025 13:23

You can change your settings so your camera is off when you join a meeting.

See attached.
On the right hand side of the camera is a dropdown where I can go in and see that the background is set to 'None'.
If I set it to blur or any background effect then all is fine for that mtg.
However the next mtg I join it defaults back to no background whereas previously the background effect I had already applied would have stuck.

Yes, my camera is off when I join the mtgs but if someone says, let's put our cameras on, I want to be able to click on the camera and know that my background isn't shown

Christ just tidy up

Blackdow · 03/06/2025 13:51

Tidy up. Or buy a pop up green screen which clips to the back of your chair and then it blocks out whatever room you’re in. I never rely on the computer doing what it’s meant to do if I want to keep my background private

Moltenpink · 03/06/2025 13:52

I’d guess this is a company setting then. Might be worth asking your IT department. Ignore the PP saying tidy up, as if you want your bedroom visible, tidy or not

OP has asked a reasonable question. Is it necessary to snap/be rude.

Blackcordoroys · 03/06/2025 14:00

You know what, you’re right. I’m sorry OP that was uncalled for

BethDuttonYeHaw · 03/06/2025 14:04

Would it kill you to tidy up?

it can’t be very nice working in a messy bedroom.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 03/06/2025 14:06

Check with your IT department, it could be a company wide default setting they have enforced.

TheDandyLion · 03/06/2025 14:06

Try using the Teams app only. If you're joining the meeting via the browser it doesn't keep your settings when you close out your session.

Would it kill you to feck off if you've nothing constructive to offer

Even if my bedroom was immaculately tidy I wouldnt want my colleagues seeing it!

I know what you mean. My background is just always there. I'll have a look later and see what my settings are.

Ficklebricks · 03/06/2025 15:08

Install a ceiling curtain and just pull it across behind you when you sit at your desk. Works wonders to cover our messy toy storage room office. We used an IKEA one but Dunelm have cheap ceiling mountable runners too.

TheSalmonMousse · 03/06/2025 15:11

It doesn't bother me working in a messy bedroom. I've done it for five years now.
Small house and no storage. It's only me that ever sees it and I know where everything is.

I had a panic when I saw it doesn't default to blur too.
