Is it worth persevering with Yellowstone?

I’ve had so many recommendations for this, I’m nearly halfway through the first episode, I’m bored, and Kevin has just delivered a breech calf that is a few weeks old, shoots up on its feet and belts off across a field with its mother straight away in a very un-newborn fashion.

So far nul points.

Does it get better?

My DH watched it and i heard alot of it but only watched a little. It’s very very violent with someone dying nearly episode or violent acts against humans or animals. Very foul language. Beth (tries to ) makes smoking/drinking martinis or filled to the very rim red wine glasses with smudged mascara while sitting alone at a bar in the middle of the day aspirational. And Beth’s face shows signs of physical violence for many of the episodes. Her face more than any other male character. The females are very sexualized…like taking your dress off in the office of a man you just introduced yourself to. Not for me

CrushingOnRubies · 03/06/2025 14:07

Definitely persevere. Best drama I’ve watched in a while

OhNoTheBridgeIsDown · 03/06/2025 15:10

Well, almost unanimously stick with it!
I still haven’t got through episode 1 yet.

DH and I persevered, he thought it was great, I thought it was shite.

Every single character apart from Jimmy was absolutely loathsome, in the end I was hoping an asteroid would land in Montana and wipe the lot of them out.

Same here. We've just finished ploughing through the whole lot of it. In my case some of the behaviour patterns of that dysfunctional family are painfully familiar to me. I thought that might make it at least a bit interesting, but it didn't. I started off feeling sorry for Beth but by the final series I was hoping that somebody would finish her off. Even the characters I think we were supposed to like were very tiresome. Apart from Jimmy.

Pemba · 08/07/2025 13:43

I ploughed through 4 series (is 5 the final one?), didn't enjoy it much at all. Well the scenery was nice...

Most of the characters are horrible and horrible to each other. There's a lot of violence in every episode which the writers seem to dwell on. Supposedly the series was the brainchild of someone with a right wing agenda, glorifying the old Western lifestyle in the USA.

Beth is a particularly horrible character, I know she had problems in her life but she is aggressive to everyone and goes out of her way to be vile to those lower down the pecking order than her, she is fond of instantly sacking employees. Well I know that's what they can do in the USA, firing people 'at will'. Land of the free, eh?

The actress Kelly Reilly, did a great job Interesting to see that she is actually British and played Caroline Bingley in the Keira Knightly 'Pride and Prejudice' (good practice in playing a complete bitch I suppose).

If i remember correctly, the first one was a double episode.

Kevin C dialogue in the first episode was laughable - every single line he uttered was some cliched aged pearl of wisdom. Once you noticed it you couldn’t not notice it and it ruined the whole thing. It caused me to not continue watching. One of these days I intend to try again but it did put me right off.

No idea, i got as far as you and gave up, never returned

Same. It just didn't grab me at all.

There's a lot of that all the way through to be honest. The characters tend to make speeches to each other rather than dialogue. You're right, once you spot it, it's very hard not to notice!

I had to try twice to get through the first episode. It is probably the worst of all of them. However, if you persevere and get into it, you’ll likely enjoy it. For me, it’s up there with Dallas/Dynasty/succession as escapist nonsense mixed in with a bit of wealth porn. Characters you cheer for, characters you absolutely hate, characters that are unhinged. Throw in a couple of unlikely heartthrobs and you’ve got yourself a show I’m hooked on. It’s certainly not real life. That said, I started off not giving a shit about ranching, had no thoughts about cowboys and Cole Hauser to me was the redhead actor who liked a shell suit way down the call sheet in Good Will Hunting. One season later I was googling ‘how much is a ranch in Montana’ and Rip certainly featured in many a dream 😂

I love a Taylor Sheridan series. He’s no Jed Mecurio but he’s great at creating a watchable yarn.

Oh dear. Hoped it would improve after a few episodes.

Lifestooshort71 · 15/07/2025 08:37

We've given up on 1883 after 8 episodes (felt like 88) so will definitely not watch any of the other series. The whole shebang could have been edited down by half, repetitive and boring. Where was John Wayne when you needed him 🥱

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 10/08/2025 19:19

Oh dear Yellowstone...I can now watch you on Netflix and though I'm hooked, I don't like how female characters have to suffer so much because the men in their lives are so shit.

I've watched 1883 & 1923 in chronological order. It's the same there. Is Taylor Sheridan a misogynist? Why can't the women catch a break?

I can almost forgive Spencer because he's gorgeous but he didn't HAVE to go to dinner at the end of S1, resulting in all that calamity with Alex. Unfortunately I don't have Paramount+ to watch series 2 though the internet has spoiled it a lot for me. Damn Taylor!

CottageGoblin · 10/08/2025 19:32

I was the same as you OP. Didn’t enjoy the first episode. Stuck with the first season and it does get better. Even watched the spin off/prequels and they are decent. Stick with it a bit longer but if you get more than half way through season 1 and aren’t into it, just watch something else

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/08/2025 19:33

I hated S2 of 1923 so I wouldn’t worry @Itsnottheheatitsthehumidityyou aren’t missing something amazing

Gagamama2 · 10/08/2025 20:07

I watched 1883 first and it was AMAZING. Then watched 1923 which set my teeth on edge, many parts of it were so cringe and that actress who played Alexandra Dutton was so awful (so were many of her lines tbf) and so was the Elizabeth character who kept having hysterics over being given a series of rabies shots 🙄. I was glad it ended and excited to start Yellowstone…found it very very meh, esp compared to 1883. It didn’t get much better. I wish they had kept more of the 1883 characters and followed them through the years setting up the ranch and creating a community etc instead of jumping to 1923 and scrapping them all for worse ones. I thought there would be some interesting character links between the generations throughout the different series but there wasn’t. TBH I don’t get the hype, it seems lazily written to me 🤷‍♀️

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/08/2025 20:16

Yes @Gagamama2 I had seen most of Yellowstone before I watched 1883 which as a show is definitely in a different league IMO. I can see why the other way round would be a disappointment.

DaisyChain505 · 10/08/2025 20:17

Nope don’t do it.

I kept going through the whole first series waiting for it to get better and it just didn’t.

False wooden acting, cheesy scripted scenes.

Dont get the hype.

Exactly the same with me and my husband! I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t liking any of the characters…it wasn’t necessarily because of their flaws, I think often that makes a better character (loved all the characters in Succession, despite them all being complete dickheads lol). I think perhaps the Yellowstone ones were written a bit too wooden. Kevin C was terrible. Dead behind the eyes, hammy, completely uninspired 😂
