Reaction emojis- why has mumsnet removed the laughing reaction?

Has anyone else noticed that it's gone?

Some posts are genuinely funny so I like to react to them.

I also suggested once we have a wow face and a sad one.

Does anyone use them much? What reactions would you like to see?

Goodness - seems fragile to remove it.

Maybe…maybe not

i do think its fragile for posters to complain that they have to press a few extra buttons to use a laugh emoji 😀

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 04/06/2025 08:19

or should that be a sad face

😩

It seems a shame. It was nice to quietly acknowledge the humour of so many of the posters on here without having to make it performative. A hat tip to the well chosen words of some genuinely witty people.

However, if people were being twattish about it, fair enough.

Yes. I saw a really funny comment on a thread recently, wanted to press the 😄emoji, and it wasn't there. None of the other emojis felt appropriate to that particular comment, and I didn't want to gum up the thread by making a whole post to quote the comment and put an emoji underneath.

So I just left it unacknowledged, even though I'd literally laughed out loud and would have liked to give them a bit of recognition for that.

I agree

Just realised it's gone and Googled to find out more - found this thread.

I felt bereft today - truly hilarious thread of OTT first time parenting anecdotes. Couldn’t quote respond to all of the ones in the 20 pages that I found funny but I would have loved to quietly marked my appreciation to the sidesplittingly cackle-inducing ones. ‘Thanks’, ‘Love’ and ‘Like’ just don’t hit the same.

It’s kinda crazy - as Brits, we thrive on self-deprecating humour. Making other people in our group laugh is our national pastime. And now we’re stuck unable to celebrate those who do it well. Le sigh.

Dealing with the dickheads who laugh at and not with you is an important skill to learn - either block them if they do and move on or find their post and find a way to slap them down. Amusingly, natch.

edited a typo!

Exactly! I feel a little sorry for anyone whose world, as it seems to them, is filled with silent ridicule. I feel sorrier for the uncomplaining majority having lost the ability to share laughter without making a performance of it.

There's no good reason to make the reactions public, and a strong reason not to - it creates popularity contests and exerts peer pressure. Quiet appreciation is a thing, you know! While you're all fulminating about the negative effect of an occasional twat misusing the facility, you've ignored the much bigger affirmative effect of positive feedback.
Pity.

Weird how we managed for a lot of years on here without react buttons and the place was funnier oddly. Simpler times....

Of course we managed. We had lengthy threads full of quoted & tagged replies just going 'haha' or Grin or Smile Used to really get on my wick but I did it, too, because it was the only feedback option.

We were funnier, I agree! I've a strong suspicion that MN humour's been suppressed by hyper-sensitive fun sponges taking prolific offence (often on behalf of hypothetical others), piling in on a minor detail of an OP, and getting angry about turns of phrase they claim to misunderstand. I don't know about you, but I second guess nearly everything I post these days. I've been debating whether to leave out hyper-sensitive fun sponges because the Sadfeels won't like it. Fuck 'em, for once.

There have been some very funny threads in the last few weeks, though, I'm delighted to observe 🤗

I'm going back before we had a quote button and a tag option. It didn't matter. Still managed to have a laugh.

Id go back to basics me.

Yeah, we used to do this, gamerchick,
