Reaction emojis- why has mumsnet removed the laughing reaction?

Onlyharmony · 02/06/2025 13:07

Has anyone else noticed that it's gone?

Some posts are genuinely funny so I like to react to them.

I also suggested once we have a wow face and a sad one.

Does anyone use them much? What reactions would you like to see?

I'm sure they are but the bosses have been actively watching since the last time it was brought up and have seen enough misuse of it to take it away.

So how does it stop someone quoting a post and laughing with their own keyboard emoji? It doesn’t.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:46

I agree gamer

this is why we can’t have nice things amelie

Onlyharmony · 02/06/2025 13:15

By using it as a means to laugh at a not necessarily funny post?

The thing is people will do that, they are humans and I don't think it's for mumsnet to police it.

I mean people post way worse in text so not sure what removing the emoji is going to do really.

It's a pity.

Edited

Of course it's for them to
pllice it. Just as they do written posts. Some people were being proper nasty with it.

they've chosen to eliminate an easy option for poster to be bitchy- fair enough. Shame the bitchy posters (not MN) had to spoil it for the rest of us

Mistyglade · 02/06/2025 17:47

I think the world will continue to turn.

😄 Except we can

Yes & no. It's now more effort AND public where the other option was a fast. Private, acknowledgement.

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 17:50

I think we need more emojis not fewer! Let’s have a mid digit one ! 😂😂😂😂

Sorry you are feeling frightened by mumsnet.

😂

I'm glad it's gone. It kept being used as an insulting patronising laugh by some bullies

So punish everyone instead of the offenders?

not really the best approach but I can see why they got fed up of trying to work
out all the accusations. So I don't blame them.

maybe they'll add in some other options instead?

XenoBitch · 02/06/2025 18:10

I am glad it is gone.
It was being misused.
Some people would tag the person who put the laugh react and ask why they thought their post was funny. This was on posts about people feeling suicidal etc. I had it happen to me on a few posts too.

LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken · 02/06/2025 18:25

We can’t have nice things, but I would like a care emoji.

It doesn't. But it's in plain sight then and bullies don't like to be seen that much. Following someone around, quoting every one of their posts with a laughing emoji is going to get attention.

I don't think you understand the issue.

It's not replying with a laughing emoji, where that reply is visible to everyone, where the person being laughed at can reply in turn, and where if a poster is being bitchy or inappropriate others can see it too. It's sending an inappropriate laugh reaction to someone to tell them you think either their experience or their position, something that may be very personal and/or important to them, is laughable in a way that they have no ability to respond to and in a way that is secret and hidden from others on the thread.

I haven't had a PA laugh reaction (well I have, but that one was a troll targetting a whole thread rather than me personally) but I have been on threads where someone else mentioned it was happening to them and it changed how I thought about that person's posts (the laugher not the laughee) - I no longer felt they were posting in good faith and stopped wasting time talking to them.

INeedAnotherName · 02/06/2025 18:47

I'm glad it's gone as well. Too many twats were using it inappropriately to upset others and I'm guessing MNHQ were getting sick of all the reports.

I've had the laughing reaction on posts linking the freedom programme for an abused woman on the Relationship board. Who the fuck does that?

sorry if I am being daft, but how someone getting laughing reaction to one of their posts means they are not posting in good faith? I am confused.

napody · 02/06/2025 20:35

Also prefer it gone. Some twat using it to me wouldn't bother me but people post on here in some really difficult and vulnerable situations. This way if you want to respond like a twat, other people can see it too. As neatly demonstrated by the bafflingly twatty responses of many on this thread....

Edited to add: I'd be fine with just a thumbs up for 'like' though tbh. Don't think the others add much.

Alexandra2001 · 02/06/2025 20:42

Penthrowingsurvivor · 02/06/2025 15:17

by bullies, do you mean someone who didn't agree with you?

You can disagree in a public post, where everyone can see the horrible reply posted... the emoji was used by some, as it is on FB to ridicule people but in a 121 personal way.

Some people who post on MN are vulnerable and need support, which after all is/was the original purpose of MN.... not some nasty personal interaction.

I never supported any of the emoji stuff, it was always going to be mis used.

I agree. I've recieved the same when discussing my disabled DC. And I've seen it mentioned on posts regarding Lucy Letby. Yes, I'm sure the weirdos posting the laughing emoji get banned, but in the mean time it is really unpleasant for the poster to see. It wasn't in the spirit of Mumsnet.

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 20:49

I’ve only ever seen it used as a reaction to a funny post and that’s how I used it too. Maybe MN should just make it visible to all. Had no idea nobody else could see it to be honest. 😳

blueshedhermit · 02/06/2025 20:53

I'm surprised the thumb up (blue and sexist too pointy and in your face), heart (love from an internet stranger) and clap (too noisy) haven't been removed, too.

To quote the inimitable @GarlicMile :

Way to go, sadfeels.

😂😆😂😂😁😀😅

LittleBearPad · 02/06/2025 20:54

It’s good it’s gone given it was upsetting people. Yes people are anonymous but if people are going to behave badly at least it has to be public now so other posters can see their behaviour.

LittleBearPad · 02/06/2025 20:54

And it’s nothing like Facebook. Facebook reactions are public.

NotjustCo2 · 02/06/2025 20:56

I’ve had 13 on one post and I was very pleased with myself. I shall miss it 😂 🪦

Yes, sorry I wasn't clear. The person posting the laughing reaction was not in good faith. The laugher, as opposed to the laughee. (I've typed laugh so much now I can't even see the word!)

I get you don't get it, but it really isn't the same thing.

And it's not "sadfeels", whatever that means to you, it's about reducing the opportunity for bad faith posters to disrupt good faith ones. You can still give people "sadfeels" if that floats your boat, you just have to do it openly now and own it. Surely that's more fun anyway?
