Reaction emojis- why has mumsnet removed the laughing reaction?

Has anyone else noticed that it's gone?

Some posts are genuinely funny so I like to react to them.

I also suggested once we have a wow face and a sad one.

Does anyone use them much? What reactions would you like to see?

OP posts:

It'll be fine. Don't worry

who's worried? You seem keen to get a reaction from me, I am not sure why?

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 16:55

But, no, they have to make so much extra work for MNHQ that everybody loses the facility to quickly share amusement

but this hasn’t actually happened though has it

you can absolutely share your amusement on this post and many others

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 16:56

Just noticed this. On a funny tv thread and now can’t laugh. Poor show Mumsnet! Would also like a dislike emoji. We don’t live in marshmallow fairytale land !

It's not about anonymity, it's about visibility and accountability. If something is worth saying it is worth saying out loud. Posters who use backchannels (DMs, PA laughing) to dig at others are adding nothing to the discussion or the MN community.

Sure it might not "matter" or be a "non-issue" in that people can just ignore it, but no one is forced to use MN and if people feel that backchannel nastiness degrades the quality of their experience and undermines what they value about MN then they may just stop coming at all, and that is bad for MN. So MN have reason to take their users' feedback seriously.

Edited

but what "visibility" and "accountability"? It's an anonymous forum, where you can name-change for every thread if you have nothing better to do.

Most posts on MN add absolutely nothing to the discussion anyway.
I mean, 100 of replies down, and there's always at least one "I haven't read the thread but...". That's a public forum for you.

It's bizarre that the permanently offended get the final say, because someone 😂at them and they're so miffed they can't cope.

ByBlueMoose · 02/06/2025 16:58

😂

I've still got it on my MN post emoji options.

No sorry, me being dumb you meant as a reaction emoji.

Why would MN remove that? It can only be seen by the poster..

BertieBotts · 02/06/2025 17:00

Haha :) Don't worry, I wouldn't be offended. Sometimes I do use the reactions especially if someone has said thanks to me I try to say thanks back.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:06

😂

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:07

Why are posters saying they can’t post laughter…i just did

is it an app thing maybe?

its only the hidden laughter one thats missing…

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 17:10

On the React button.

I made the same mistake - they're not saying you can't post the laughing emoji on posts, everyone can.

They're saying they can't post it as a reaction to someone's posts anymore.

The little 'react' option below everyone's posts. Used to include a laughing emoji, now the only options are applause, thumbs up or heart.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:12

yeah i know green

i just can’t work out why people are upset that a hidden laughter one reaction has gone

if the laugh emoji had gone then maybe they would have a point…but its just the hidden one

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 17:14

Hidden?

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:15

bybluemoose

oh i wasnt mistaken, i knew people meant the hidden one

but cos I couldn’t understand why some posters were so unhappy about it I thought maybe all the laugh emoji had gone 😀

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 17:16

Still don’t k ow what you mean by hidden laughter.

You can't name change within a thread. If somone feels the urge to dig at a poster, now they have to do it on the thread where other people can see it and possibly also respond to it, maybe not in the way you might like.

Visibility and accountability. Nothing is perfect, but forcing nastyness into the sunlight is usually a good thing.

Oh and just to pick you up on a little point here - "permanently offended" usually refers to taking offence at something that is maybe a little tone deaf but not intended to be offensive. The PA laughing emoji dig is deliberate. Aside from maybe the occasional mis-type or laughing at a funny post from someone you have so far been disagreeing with, it's not something that could be misconstrued. So you could perhaps critcise them for being thin-skinned, but not for taking offense that wasn't intended.

Yes but it’s not hidden. It’s a react button.

greengreyblue · 02/06/2025 17:19

The op clearly says it’s about Reaction emojis.

Penthrowingsurvivor · 02/06/2025 15:17

by bullies, do you mean someone who didn't agree with you?

No. I mean putting it under every single post I wrote. (Including finding me on other threads and doing it there too) Or are you actually implying it's used to 'disagree?'. It'd be a very passive aggressive way to 'disagree' wouldn't it ? I don't understand how you've concluded that I cannot take people 'disagreeing?'

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/06/2025 17:28

yes i know its a reaction button

some posters are saying they can’t react to a post with a laugh

they can…they can’t put a laugh reaction on a post that is ‘hidden’ to everyone on the thread except the recipient

Yes we know but the thread is about why MN have removed it.

I'm sure you'll cope without it.

I'm sure they are but the bosses have been actively watching since the last time it was brought up and have seen enough misuse of it to take it away.

small amount of people spoil things for everyone else

This.

i went to use it thus afternoon & it was gone 😢. It had become do handy when you just wanted to quickly sooorevuste the humour without quoting the oust.

but the posters using it in a bitchy way spoilt it for everyone! I guess MNHQ got fed up of the reports about it

it was used bitchily against me but I didn't report it. It felt too 'playground snitching' but they did encourage people to report the misuse of it 🤷🏻‍♀️
