Which three herbs?

I’ve been given a lovely planter with three pots. I’m going to have it in my kitchen for fresh herbs. Which three herbs would you choose? 🪴 🪴🪴

Basil, coriander and more coriander.

Strawberriesforever · 01/06/2025 10:33

Basil, chives, coriander

SpringGreenOnion · 01/06/2025 10:34

Parsley, basil, mint

onyourway · 01/06/2025 10:34

Basil, oregano, thyme

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2025 10:34

I find basil and coriander quite difficult to grow tbh. I’d go for mint, thyme and rosemary.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/06/2025 10:35

Three varieties of thyme. Your kitchen will smell glorious.

Disposableusername374 · 01/06/2025 10:35

The ones that don’t survive year-round outside! Basil coriander and parsley! (Assuming you are in the UK.)

Strawberriesforever · 01/06/2025 10:40

If if you plant mint and 2 other herbs you’ll end up with mint mint and mint.

TheGirlWhoLived · 01/06/2025 10:41

Basil, mint and thyme

This is true.

I never manage to keep basil alive for long, even indoors on a warm windowsill and cosseted, and rosemary is happy outdoors, so probably different types of thyme? Have never grown coriander, admittedly.

Sossusvlei · 01/06/2025 11:20

Oooh lots of replies! A lot of love for coriander - I think I’d use it a lot BUT a pp said it’s hard to grow. Maybe I’ll have a go.
I have loads of rosemary outside and also a pot of chives already (although I’m very lazy about actually going out to get some).

Confession - I hardly ever use thyme except for with roast lamb. What else should I be using it for?!

I think I’m set on basil and coriander but still debating The Third Herb…

I'd choose the ones I'd use a lot. For me that's chives, basil and coriander. Buy a supermarket plant and drastically thin it out and then they can last for ages.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/06/2025 11:24

Chives! And ditch the coriander for sage or parsley!!!

Runnersandtoms · 01/06/2025 11:24

Chives are useful for adding an onion flavour without going to the trouble of chopping an onion!

Not if they're in pots.

Depends what you'd use. I have no idea when I would use sage or parsley. I use basil in Italian stuff and anything with tomatoes, and coriander in Mexican or Thai food.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2025 11:27

Coriander tends to go very 'leggy' quickly ime.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2025 11:27

Chives a good call. Easy to grow.

This. Except parsley is native and hardy, it's just short lived (like foxgloves it's biennial). What about chillies?

TheDandyLion · 01/06/2025 11:29

Chives, lovage and dill.
