Which three herbs?

I’ve been given a lovely planter with three pots. I’m going to have it in my kitchen for fresh herbs. Which three herbs would you choose? 🪴 🪴🪴

Coriander isn't very happy here (assuming you're in the UK) and usually doesn't last very well, so personally I'd go for basil, parsley, thyme. Chillies would look great and are useful too. Depends on how big the pots are, too.

Depends what you'd use. I have no idea when I would use sage or parsley. I use basil in Italian stuff and anything with tomatoes, and coriander in Mexican or Thai food.

Parsley goes with literally everything like salads & sauces.
I like sage with scrambled eggs or potato salad or creamy pork instead of tarragon.
It also makes a lovely refreshing tea...

The ones that don’t survive year-round outside! Basil coriander and parsley! (Assuming you are in the UK.)

Yes agree with this, if your growing indoors. I like ve sage and since I've planted it in the ground I can have it all year round (used to die off in the winter when in pots)

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 11:49

Sage freezes really well so that's how I keep it. I do the same with tarragon except I make tarragon butter with it and then freeze that. I find Rosemary difficult so I just buy that when I want it, same with coriander.

We grow chives and dill outside.

spotddog · 01/06/2025 11:49

Garlic chives. Not easy to source but good garden centre should have.
I saw them on Edenderry herb site some years ago.

CoastalCalm · 01/06/2025 11:50

Basil and coriander are really prone to bolting over summer so I’d go for thyme , oregano and mint

Nagginthenag · 01/06/2025 11:50

Tarragon, thyme and parsley.

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 11:52

Mint us very useful for summer drinks! However it's very happy outside.

spotddog · 01/06/2025 11:52

Just checked, garlic chives are available easily.

SusanSHelit · 01/06/2025 11:52

Basil sage and thyme would be my preferences, as I use one of these three almost every day

evtheria · 01/06/2025 12:00

Oregano/marjoram, basil, and flat-leafed parsley.

They’re what I grow and use most often (though I can rarely keep the basil going!). My golden oregano is outdoors in a teeny pot and has been going strong for over 7yrs!
But I also love thyme as a pretty, scented plant, and think chives are very easy.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/06/2025 12:04

Oregano as it comes back each year, you'll get decent leaves for about 9 months.
Rosemary and sage are really easy to grow.
But I'd go for thyme. My thyme plant died sadly.

Basil is great but I don't think it keeps coming back? Mine doesn't anyway. Or maybe I just went mad and plucked off too many leaves!

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 12:07

If you pinch off basil correctly you encourage further growth.

I've never had oregano at home, might try that!

MoistVonL · 01/06/2025 12:15

I usually grow coriander in the veg garden and although it will bolt in a dry spell it does usually grow very easily (North of England)

Parsley is a swine to germinate but grows well both inside and out. However, I use so much of it I’d not find a small pot any use.

Rosemary (water it very sparingly) and thyme are great long living herbs. I like rosemary and slices of melon or cucumber in jugs of water in the summer. Thyme on roasted or steamed carrots is delicious.

Sage is another robust and long lasting one. I have it with tortellini or butternut squash risotto; just lightly fry the leaves in butter until crisp.

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 12:16

I'm getting hungry reading this thread 😊

EBearhug · 01/06/2025 12:23

I'd probably go for parsley, basil and chives. Or possibly tarragon, as it doesn't do well with me.

I have a selection of mints outside, plus sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, some more chives, and other herbs.

Thyme is okay, but I'd probably avoid larger woody herbs like sage or rosemary unless it's a large pot (you can get prostrate rosemary which might do better.) I'd likewise avoid taller umbellifers like lovage.

Holly485 · 01/06/2025 12:28

Go to the supermarket and see what potted herbs they have? So much easier than growing most herbs from seed (apart from chives which are really easy!).

I have rosemary and basil at the moment. Not parsley as that stuff is disgusting!

Sossusvlei · 01/06/2025 12:28

So many ideas!! And so much deliciousness! Thyme on carrots - how did I not know this?!

I find basil and coriander quite difficult to grow tbh. I’d go for mint, thyme and rosemary.

Not just me then.

No seed-growing planned. I’ll be buying three already bushy plants!

Parsley sage and thyme, possibly rosemary too

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 12:31

Thyme is wonderful on carrots. And on roasted beets with red onion, balsamic vinegar and garlic. 🙂

IgneousSedimentary · 01/06/2025 12:32

Damn you all, I just realised why I was wandering through the house singing

PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY AND THYME

in a very annoying earworm .

SummertimeFeelingFine · 01/06/2025 12:33

Haha @IgneousSedimentary I just caught myself doing that a minute ago!

whitewineandsun · 01/06/2025 12:35

Basil, oregano, parsley.
