Which three herbs?

I’ve been given a lovely planter with three pots. I’m going to have it in my kitchen for fresh herbs. Which three herbs would you choose? 🪴 🪴🪴

Coriander, mint and rosemary. I love the taste of basil but I think it smells like cat’s piss and can’t stand the smell of it in my kitchen.

I have found that basil lasts for months if the pot is kept sitting permanently in water so it gets all the water it wants from the base.

I think I’m set on basil and coriander but still debating The Third Herb…

Chervil, mate. Fabulous with aggs, fish, etc. Can't get it in any of the shops I visit. Used to flourish in a friend's garden so how hard can it be to grow?

Thank you! I do love basil but it seems to fail on me! X

Thyme, mint and oregano.

It's not a problem with a repotted supermarket basil but I can't get basil and coriander seeds to germinate in the first place. I planted lots of coriander seeds and I have one measly tiny plant in the greenhouse.

If it’s based on what I use most it would be basil, thyme and either tarragon or parsley. Fresh tarragon can sometimes be trickier to buy (always seems to be sold out) so maybe that.

Theoldwoman · 01/06/2025 13:12

Parsley, mint and lemon balm

Confession - I hardly ever use thyme except for with roast lamb. What else should I be using it for?!

I use thyme loads. On top of roast carrots/parsnips and roast potatoes, on chicken, in stews. It’s very versatile.

ExtensiveDebating · 01/06/2025 13:19

Chives - because my outdoor ones die back in winter. Maybe garlic chives for a change.
Basil because it is annual.
Parsley also for a constant supply.

Thyme, oregano and rosemary are all year outdoors. Coriander bolts in no time, I just buy a big bunch at the market and keep it in the fridge, it lasts a couple of weeks.

LetYouEntertainMe · 01/06/2025 13:25

Mint is a waste because it's very easy to grow outside. Chives also easy outside and both are perenial so will keep coming back

Basil, corriander would be my choice and then I'd look for something else that I liked that is annual and does well indoors. Something more unusual like borage or lovage.

AdaColeman · 01/06/2025 13:26

Basil chives and tarragon would be my choice. Tarragon is often difficult to buy, but so useful with chicken dishes.

Mint and sage do well outside here, and cut parsley lasts well in a jug of water. Coriander tastes soapy to me, so I always avoid it.

raspberrieswithchocolate · 01/06/2025 13:35

Basil, coriander and mint

SquigglePigs · 01/06/2025 14:04

Basil, coriander and rosemary for me.

Sossusvlei · 01/06/2025 15:54

HOW WILL I CHOOSE 😁

What are you top 3 favorite dinners? I would try to grow to supply those 😊

smallstitch · 01/06/2025 16:48

Coriander, Thyme, rosemary (just because they’re the three I use most!)

BlueEyedBogWitch · 01/06/2025 17:03

Thyme is great in Jamaican rice and peas, along with garlic and allspice.

I use it with rosemary, lemon and garlic when roasting chicken, or with roasted root veg. Carrot, orange and thyme is another delicious combination.

MoistVonL · 01/06/2025 17:22

After three failures in a row, basil
has finally germinated!

Which three herbs?
bloodredfeaturewall · 01/06/2025 17:49

3 different varieties of mint
lemon balm
(thinking of things that are great with a drink or as infusion)

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 01/06/2025 18:11

Another tip for basil growing - it roots readily in water so once your original plant is getting a bit leggy, take some cuttings and put them in a jar of water on the windowsill. By the time the original plant gives up, the cuttings will have enough roots to pot on. You can keep a supermarket pot going for years this way.

That’s a good idea! I guess…curry, stir fry and something Italian-style ((vague))?

OP posts:
unsync · 01/06/2025 18:29

Chervil.

ExperiencedTeacher · 01/06/2025 18:30

I have basil, coriander, sage and thyme. I use thyme absolutely loads- tray bakes, pasta dishes, roasted meats. It’s probably my most used herb now

Alongthetowpath · 01/06/2025 18:32

Parsley, dill and mint are the ones I use the most.

I don’t really like basil. People are usually horrified to hear me say that. But give me parsley any day.
