Bedford is dull

Hi I’m wondering why Bedford is a dull town
it has such bad swimming teachers in Robinson pool and the pool was too cold in oasis and also a very busy and not nice place to go Bedford doesn’t have loads to offer rather then shops wich is what we need but Bedford needs to improve otherwise I will move out of Bedford and only visit to universal studios once it’s built as Bedford has only one place for grown ups and that’s vue cinema Bedford when there was a cineworld that sadly shut down

WHY BEDFORD

a super dull place to live and not many nice places.

would you live there

Sorry, where was it again?

KnickerlessParsons · 31/05/2025 23:17

Have you ever heard of full stops?

Needmorelego · 31/05/2025 23:20

You can get a direct train down to Brighton without having to change in London so that's good.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 31/05/2025 23:22

I’m sure Bedford will take your threat to leave seriously and sort itself out. Otherwise, cheer up. You need The Rose til close! 😉

Negroany · 31/05/2025 23:22

I do live there, it's fine actually. Never been to Esquires?
We have excellent restaurants, loads of nice cafes, the river and marina are lovely. There are two sports centers.

Trinity pool is better and it's only a skip to the lido at Woburn. The Swan hotel has a nice mini spa and it's not far up the road to Wybostin Spa or across country to Henlow Grange.

Brilliant local walks. Easy commute to London. Some beautiful villages on the outskirts.

Yeah, not loads of town centre shops but that's the same for all towns. We do have a Waitrose though!

A quick Google shows me there's lots of country parks that look nice.
What do you want from a town @FastDreamer ?
To be honest most of England's towns are pretty much the same.
Same shops, cinemas, pubs, parks etc.
Housing estates, schools, playparks.
One town might have a museum that's unique to it, or a culture feature like a steam train, zoo or castle etc that the next town over doesn't.
But for day to day life.... they're pretty much all the same.

Bedford has two unique museums I think. The Panacea society museum and the John Bunyan museum.

@Negroany I have frequently passed through Bedford when changing trains or buses.
Other than the main shopping centre (usually looking for somewhere to grab snacks) I've never explored it.
I'm quite intrigued.
Thanks @FastDreamer for sparking an interest.
Sorry you find it dull.

Yeah, that is a fairly unpleasant part of town to be honest, but busy stations always are (there is a Greggs nearby so that's something!).

notprincehamlet · 01/06/2025 09:00

Is this a very slow-burn attempt to subvert the West by badmouthing Bedford?

SarfLondonLad · 01/06/2025 09:50

Got a brewery. They ruined Youngs beer, but it's a brewery none the less.

Longingforspringtime · 01/06/2025 10:40

Love Bedford. The river, suspension bridge and the swans. Great transport to London.

Dustmylemonlies · 01/06/2025 10:55

I had an ex who hailed from there, many years ago. I remember being singularly unimpressed with the town but found the countryside around Bedford surprisingly pretty... There are nice places in the locale.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/06/2025 10:56

I was born in Bristol (and now live just outside the city).
I have been to all the other places on your list including Bedford (had elderly relatives there).
The only place I wouldn't consider was Gloucester. It was really run down, except the Gloucester Quays outlet mall.

Piggywaspushed · 01/06/2025 10:59

Oh, I live here. When I first visited, an inhabitant told me its bonus was it was easy to get to other places! But, when I was younger it was better than it is now, like a lot of towns.

Still, being Bedfordian is a thing. It does have an identity, the river is nice. Cineworld was awful! The Vue is a great, town centre cinema.

I'm surprised you mention it has shops. This is one thing we no longer have!

Piggywaspushed · 01/06/2025 11:01

Your poll is an odd assortment!

I'm sure many really exciting towns have bad swimming teachers and cold pools.

Jamjarcandlestick · 01/06/2025 11:05

Bedford’s town centre is pretty dire. Like many places in the UK there’s lots of homeless/druggies/people living in extreme poverty loitering around.

The shop selling BHS returns always makes me laugh. Would you really want to buy pillows that you know that have been sitting around for at least ten years?

The river is lovely and a nice place to take a walk.

There are worse things than dull.

localnotail · 01/06/2025 11:31

Its dull but nowhere near as dull as Kettering, Corby or Wellingborough.

AhBiscuits · 01/06/2025 11:32

You want dull, try growing up in a Norfolk village. I live in Bristol now and adore it.

No full stops in Bedford

PurpleChrayn · 01/06/2025 12:22

I wouldn’t live in any of those holes apart from London, to be honest.
