Salads

What’s your favourite? (Mumsnet ‘Massive Salad’ aside of course. Does anyone know what actually constitutes as a MN MS?)

I have just had an amazing Caesar salad, homemade so I can add as much croutons, garlic, anchovies as I want. I like it quite punchy!
Also love a Salad Niçoise.
And Potato Salad.

I love salads.

Pasta salad with veggies, boiled egg and tuna
i often roast chickpeas and throw them in as well

Caesar salad is the best and I'm not a salad person.

I do the standard 4 ingredients (romaine, croutons, parmesan and ceasar dressinng) but also add chicken breast and proscuttio. All the flavours blend so well but it looks great visually as the bright pink of the parma ham contrasts with the white of the chicken and the bright green of the lettuce vs the brown of the croutons.

Occasionally do couscous salad.

Grilled halloumi cut into small bits, shreds of parma ham, halved cherry tomatoes, baby spinach, halved new potatoes with a garlic, olive oil, black pepper and lemon juice dressing. Best served with the halloumi and potatoes slightly warm.

Some sliced baguette on the side for mopping.

Potato salad is the best. New potatoes, red onion, chives, bacon and a dressing of creme fraiche and mayo. Glorious!

AdaColeman · 31/05/2025 17:04

I like a Waldorf salad, crisp lettuce, chopped apple, finely diced celery, walnuts, sultanas (though I often swap sultanas for black grapes) in a mayonnaise dressing. Or you could use a yoghurt dressing. I usually have it with smoked mackerel fillets or smoked trout fillets.

Another favourite is coronation chicken salad, served on lettuce and cucumber.

I had a Santorini Salad in Bill's in Covent Garden last year, and it's a firm favourite of mine now.

Romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, pumpkin seeds, black olives, red onion, feta cheese and fesh mint.

Bill's does it with a molasses dressing, but I swap that out for a balsamic glaze dressing.

Please note - that's pumpkin seeds. Not dried green lentils, as I liberally added, when I wasn't watching which container I'd taken out of the cupboard.

Your standard avocado, tomato and mozzarella with basil is always good.

Anyone else see "Waldorf Salad" and immediately go to Fawlty Towers in their head? 😂

"I think we're just out of Waldorfs"

I don’t have a favourite but I use herbs, fresh from the garden, in my salads. I like salad with salmon/chichen/steak slices.

I did! I don't think I could ever eat one!

An “everything salad”:

couple of types of lettuce
cucumber
carrot
black olives
kidney beans
sweetcorn
artichoke hearts
blue cheese (or mozzarella or feta or whatever)
boiled egg
peas and/or asparagus and/or green beans sometimes
croutons
mixed seeds
crispy onions
crispy chickpeas
pizza express dressing

lots of flavours, colours, textures basically

I'm not a fan of massive salads with the kitchen sink chucked in. Few ingredients, good dressing.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/05/2025 17:22

Waldorf, pear, feta, beetroot (raw grated) maybe melon , grated carrot any obvious green salad bits.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/05/2025 17:27

If it's done well, a Cobb salad is a wonderful thing 😋

SparklyBrickViper · 31/05/2025 17:32

I love a broccoli chopped salad.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/05/2025 17:32

I like spiced cauliflower and chickpea salad. Basically roast cauliflower and chickpeas with cumin, ground coriander, nigella seeds, garlic, chilli and salt. Serve on a bed of leaves of your choice with finely chopped celery, peppers, cucumber and pickled red onions. Drizzle with a dressing of yoghurt with mint and garlic.

murasaki · 31/05/2025 17:33

As a side to spicy food, I am a recent convert to sliced radish, thin cucumber strips done with a potato peeler with an olive oil, sugar and lime juice dressing. Very refreshing.

drspouse · 31/05/2025 17:35

There's a BBC Good Food Epic Salad that's amazing. Can't remember all the ingredients but it includes mango, radishes, black beans I think, it's, well, epic.
Just made a nice spinach, halloumi, and orange salad too.

Lavendersong · 31/05/2025 17:38

For lunch I just had a basic salad of tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, feta, onion, olives, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

I’ve boiled some potatoes to have as a salad later and tomorrow

Haha at basic! Sounds good though.

JellicleCat · 31/05/2025 17:43

Orange, watercress and walnut with an oil and vinegar dressing. It's also good with pecans. Nice with grilled chicken.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 31/05/2025 17:52

Watermelon, feta and mint.

MonGrainDeSel · 31/05/2025 18:06

Quinoa salad is my obsession in the summer. I put red cabbage, onions, spring onions, sauerkraut, capers and carrots in it plus whatever else looks good (radishes, peppers, seeds/nuts, edamame beans, fresh peas, roasted veg, herbs etc etc etc). Dress with lemon juice and olive oil or any other dressing you like. You can buy pouches of cooked quinoa which makes it super quick but if I cook my own I do it in stock to give extra flavour.
