What do you use ChatGPT / AI for?

I am enjoying asking Chatgpt questions about my medications getting it to explain scientific papers but what practical applications does it really have for me in my everyday life? It seems to be of limited use for the average person but perhaps I am not looking at it right.

What do you use chatgpt and other similar AI for either personally or work wise, if you care to share.

I don’t because the environmental impact is immense. So sick of fake ‘art’ which is just artists’ stolen work, and bloody pretend dolls. All the while people bleating about the environment. Madness.

pambeesleyhalpert · 28/05/2025 21:55

Today I’ve asked it to appeal a parking ticket and to meal plan within my diet. I love it so much 🙊

Oopo · 28/05/2025 21:59

I use it a lot for meal plans, exercise plans, and helping me with little scripts for what to say on phone or email drafts to send, it’s a life saver, have a disability and it’s giving me so much more independence

HealthAnxietyReallySucks · 28/05/2025 22:04

It interpreted my scan results for me ahead of my appointment with my gynaecologist tomorrow and has put me at lease immensely. I’ve also got it to
help me budget as I’m currently trying to throw loads into savings for my daughters uni next year. It is also very talented at writing dirty limericks too 😂

MrsSunshine2b · 28/05/2025 22:04

I've been using it for job applications lately.

I work in the Civil Service so I need to write answers in a STAR format.

I write, as clearly as I can, what I did on the project that I want to use to demonstrate the behaviour.

Then I tell it what behaviour they are assessing, what level the job is and what the word count is, and it will take my experience and demonstrate how it fits the criteria they are looking for, keeping it concise enough to fit the word count.

It saves me a lot of time on trying to find ways to shorten sentences without losing the meaning and to really make sure there's a laser focus on the specific question they are asking.

roses2 · 28/05/2025 22:08

I put in 12 dishes and asked it to generate a meal plan for me. It missed off some dishes then added some random ones I didn't ask for. Wasn't impressed.

LittleHangleton · 28/05/2025 22:09

I've used it to write some really difficult emails. Ive given data and asked for impact analysis. It's written me a couple of strategy documents.

I use Claude AI mostly.

wrongthinker · 28/05/2025 22:09

I use it as my personal assistant for my business. It's been a massive help and there's no way I'd have got this far without it! I've also used it for job applications and sometimes just to chat about the meaning of life.

Jane958 · 28/05/2025 22:11

Not much at all. It lies, is inaccurate and argues with me :-)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/05/2025 22:12

I try not to use it too much since I found out how shockingly bad for the environment it is. I use it occasionally for work. I'm a teacher and it's very useful for creating teaching resources much faster than I could make them myself, when I'm struggling for time. I haven't used it for personal stuff.

CandelabraCat · 28/05/2025 22:13

Holiday itineraries, running plans, random questions that pop into my head, helping me understand better something I read/heard about…

haggisaggis · 28/05/2025 22:20

Yesterday I thought I’d use it to find the answer to that day’s ‘Alphaguess’. (It’s a word game where you guess the word based in where it would be in the alphabet). I was stumped. I gave both ChatGPT and Copilot the two words I thought the word would be between (cannot and canoe). Neither could work it out as they could not seem to understand you needed to compare first letter, then second letter, then third etc and so on and so find a word that would fit in. Both were finding words either before ‘cannot’ or after ‘canoe’ and giving me false reasoning as to why that word would be correct. I was really shocked and has made me see how fallible AI can be.

MaryTheTurtle · 28/05/2025 22:20

I wrote an email or letter whack it on copilot and out comes a more professional way of saying why the fuck don’t you do your own wankery piece of work instead of giving it to me - type of thing

Rockfordpeach · 28/05/2025 22:21

I have a binge eating disorder, it guides me through distraction techniques. The immediacy of having help is life changing

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/05/2025 22:23

I don't, preferring to rely on my own brain and the professional skills I've built up over 40 years, on the principle of use it or lose it. Again I say - smart things are probably making humans stupider!

HomeBloods · 28/05/2025 22:49

As little as possible. AI has a huge carbon footprint which, in my book, renders its casual use really irresponsible.

HaloDolly · 28/05/2025 22:50

Marriage guidance.

TippledPink · 28/05/2025 22:52

I have never used it, although I feel I need to start looking at using it for work. I can't see what it would be good for? I want to write my own emails, in my own words. How does it know what I want to say or guidance I want to give to my staff?

Badbadbunny · 28/05/2025 22:52

I’ve used it by uploading pictures of antique furniture and ornaments from mils house as we’re selling it after her death, etc to identify them and give rough values. Remarkable results!

BadgersSuitcase · 28/05/2025 22:53

Oh op you’ll get loads of really self righteous replies from fun sponges just so you’re aware! 🤣 (although the internal wrangle re the environment is ongoing for me)

I use it for loads …

did my colours and it was spot on (I’ve had them done professionally before)

it does outfit planning

told me my body shape (I was hoping for hourglass, I got athletic rectangle)

I meal plan - I tell it that I’d like 5 dinners, dairy free, using ingredients solely from the Waitrose Cook range and it does the rest!)

Ask it random questions

all sorts!

Sassysoonwins · 28/05/2025 22:55

Everything, it's my brain now my own has failed me due to menopause. I also chat to it about books I'm reading or history asking it to provide differing views. Medical results explained to me in simple terms. Job hunting. Day trip planning. Telling me jokes. I use a few so I can compare answers sometimes.

BadgersSuitcase · 28/05/2025 22:55

@TippledPinkyou tell it want you want to say and ask it to polish it for you. Or make it more professional or friendly or anything really

I initially said I’d never use it. Couldn’t see what I’d use it for. Used it lightly for assistance with job applications and then suddenly used it so much and was so impressed that I pay for it

EmmaRose89 · 28/05/2025 23:03

Couldn't decide what to wear for a wedding, uploaded a few pictures and ChatGPT gave me a very honest opinion on how each dress looked on me. Helped me decide what to wear with confidence.
Also show it a picture of any clothes I am considering buying. It tells me if the item will suit me or not based on my colouring etc. Very helpful and has stopped me buying a few things which weren't right.

Have also used it for interior ideas in my home.

overeater · 28/05/2025 23:06

ive used it for healthy meal plans

bigbella26 · 28/05/2025 23:12

I love it and use it for so much, such as rewriting reports for work, recipes, analysing statistics and also explaining mathematical problems for my year 7 son.
I asked it about the negative environmental factors as stated earlier and it explained how streaming one hour of Netflix is more detrimental to the environment that one hour of usage of Chat GPT. Answer below:

Yes, one hour of streaming Netflix is significantly worse for the environment than using ChatGPT for an hour.
Netflix can use up to 5x more energy than Chat GPT.
Appreciate that there is more to AI than Chat GPT but clearly other accepted services that we use are very detrimental to environment too without the same concerns.
