Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

That so not true re ease of finding underwear! Ive just had this same problem with DH in ….Paris!!!

We had the same in Crete. Asked in so many men's clothing shops but no, nobody sold any. So mysterious, where do Cretan guys buy their underwear? DH was washing his one pair of boxers in the sink daily.

We forgot our holiday spending money once. And the tickets to a show on a weekend away (we were halfway there and drove back home for them - I thought DH had them, he thought I did. Now I always pick them up!)

We now have holiday check lists and don't really forget stuff <touch wood>

It was our wedding day and Dh went to get changed. He came down stairs and left his suitcase key and his lighter in the bedroom. We went outside to leave and had lots of rice thrown at us.

We drove off and about ten miles from home he realised he had left the lighter behind and stopped to get some matches and left a pile of rice on the shop floor. We arrived at our hotel where he realised he had also left the key behind and we had to spend about an hour breaking into the case and ended up with more rice on the floor.

Dh doesn’t smoke anymore and we have code locks on the suitcases.

I am normally naturally organised but I had a breakdown and couldn’t remember or organise anything. I went away for a weekend and had packed a sheer white top. Only took one bra and it was black 🤷‍♀️. I also forgot a hairbrush and a toothbrush but luckily I remembered toothpaste.

LurcherMumma · 27/05/2025 19:57

There was also a time when I was a child. Family of four going on a campervan holiday. About 30 minutes in driving my dad mentioned how well behaved and quiet the dog was being. Realised she wasn't in the van. (Luckily wasn't too far of course we went back for her!)

Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Do people do this LOL 😂

We also once got home to discover the freezer had died while we were on holiday. The smell was horrendous.

This happened to us when we lived in the Middle East... In summer!!!

We'd come back to the UK for a month and found out after the police had broken down the door because they thought someone had died!

Turned out the freezer hadn't stopped working but the stupid landlord had confused the electricity company and inadvertently had our power disconnected! God the cockroach problem after that haunts me to this day!

ohreallyIsee · 27/05/2025 20:08

dd1 and her partner went to Ireland camping, they got to the campsite and realised they'd managed to forget both the tent and their sleeping bags.

We once managed to forget the travel cot when dd1 was a baby and also managed to forget to pack any tops for dd2-quick trip to primary needed

pinkstripeycat · 27/05/2025 20:19

I had a tummy bug a couple of days before we travelled to Cornwall. Normally I’d pack food for the week and help the kids pack. I could barely stand so ended up scraping a few things for myself.

DH packed his own stuff and forgot the kids walking shoes & eldest DC coat. I’d managed to pack some dry food before I got ill so we had breakfast things.

He also forgot the dog food (his dog) who is on a special diet, dog bowl & water bowl.

It all fell on me and we had to do a lot of shopping for things when we arrived. DH was sorted though so he didn’t care about anyone else.

KarmaKameelion · 27/05/2025 20:26

My passport! My visa was in my old passport and I only brought my new one. had to renter as a tourist and luckily had a work trip a couple of weeks later so left the country and then renter on back on the visa. Technically should not have worked for those two weeks

We are all human and forget small things and sometimes small things like this can be big problems due to physical or mental health or they might have a dog that doesn’t finish their food all at once. It’s an easy mistake, no one’s perfect so please be kind.

im sure their post was lighthearted but theres no need for you to be rude about it.

changedusernameforthis1 · 27/05/2025 20:36

Last year I forgot my medication. Massive panic and flapping until we managed to get a bridging prescription at a nearby pharmacy (UK holiday).
Will definitely be double checking this year!

NeighboursNasty · 27/05/2025 20:40

I am on a hiking and camping holiday in the northern highlands currently - forgot my pillow and hiking boots.

Pillow I can fashion until we get to a shop tomorrow - not sure I want to hike in my crocs or converse tomorrow though - so could be an expensive day!!!

Muststopeating · 27/05/2025 20:40

Went to Cuba with now DH when we were 20. You can only buy Cuban currency in Cuba. We knew this. We took cash. Scottish cash!!! (Not accepted).

The only credit card we had at the time was an American Express (also not accepted).

Luckily between the travel rep and a phone call to my dad we managed to get enough money sent over via the agent that I could buy whatever emergency item I apparently absolutely had to have (it was an all inclusive holiday and I can't remember but think I may have had a skin reaction to something).

I think the dog owners who are horrified by potential ick in the dog bowl or toxic fly footsteps are urban dwellers, and also have never noticed that their dog licks its own arse.

OP, not a forgetful one, but I once turned up to the airport with an out of date passport 😳

123teenagerfood · 27/05/2025 20:45

All my 4mth olds clothes, they were packed in a separate bag. Husband and I packed up the car and set off to France, we had some nappies and one set of clothes in his changing bag. Realised when we got him ready for his bath. Went to a supermarket and got him some new clothes the next day. The bag was waiting for us on our bed when we arrived home.

Not a holiday but a conference, with work colleagues. Forgot pjs/nightdress. No problem, slept in just my pants.

There was a fire alarm in the middle of the night. I panicked, remembered all the 'do not stop to collect your belongings' warnings, and ran out into the night with only a sheet. Everyone else ambled out fully clothed, including warm jackets

To make it worse, I was their (shivering) boss.

This is the type of thing I have nightmares about!

supersonicginandtonic · 27/05/2025 20:47

Every single holiday I go on I forget something if mine. I've forgotten;
Swimsuit
Pants
Contact lenses
Medication
Tent poles
Air bed
Sleeping bag
Passports
Euros
You name it I've forgotten it at some point 🙈

brassmonkeywife · 27/05/2025 20:47

I managed to leave 2 of our sex toys on the bedside table when the parents in law were going to be looking after our 2 DDs while DH and I went to a wedding in Suffolk ..... and the PIL were going to use our bedroom and en suite ..... when we got home they'd been left exactly where they were ...

Bingbangboo · 27/05/2025 20:49

When my son was small we took him to Butlins. My clothes were on hangers, which DH managed to leave in the hallway. As I am really tall I find shopping a nightmare anyway, plus there were only a few 'old lady' shops nearby, so I couldn't even buy any replacement clothes. I had the clothes I arrived in, my pyjamas and my bathers. First night there my son puked down me on the dance floor whilst we were doing the hokey-cokey. We took him back to the chalet and he later projectile vomited all over my pyjamas. When it was clear it was a vomiting bug we decided to head home. I slunk out wearing my bathers with my son's baby blanket fashioned as a sarong. As we were leaving in the middle of the night the security guard on the gate made us get out so he could check our car and verify what we were doing. He shone a torch up and down my outfit a few times - the shame! Never let my husband pack a car since.

I switched the fridge off after emptying it to save electric

But

It was connected to the freezer and I got home after three weeks to a fiat full of bluebottles and it smelled of dead bodies. I can't believe no one had called the police, to look for a corpse. When I cleaned it up, I vomited frequently which was helpful. It also dropped all over the communal stairway and halls as I didn't want to take it in the lift. Noone said a word, it was weird.

Edited

Been there but not done it myself. DGD and friends visited holiday home and accidentally switched off the freezer. The next visitor - me - got a horrible surprise.

Sun cream and after sun- the aftersun cost so much for a tiny bottle and they didn’t know what spf 50 was!!!

Ah yes, one year I forgot all one kid's knickers. The next year all the same kid's shorts. 'Mum can I wear knickers today? No, they're for the plane journey home' I think it's because he's the most easy going one.

This is sad. I hope he learns to speak up for himself.
Could you not buy more knickers?

BetterWithPockets · 27/05/2025 21:01

Once got to the airport to discover DD, then about 7, was wearing wellies instead of trainers, and neither DH nor I had noticed. We were going to Spain, and it was early summer… Had to buy her a pair of sandals at the airport!

A small sewing kit, and a hairbrush.
