Injecting a little luxury into life, without breaking the bank

I recently treated myself to a fancy coffee and macarons in a designer department store. Cheaper than buying anything there, but still felt luxurious :)

Thought it might be fun to start a thread on how people get their little fixes of luxury without spending a fortune.

I love afternoon tea, especially the little sandwiches

DelphiniumBlue · 28/05/2025 16:31

I like decent coffee bags, I currently get them from Moreish. It's a little treat, but every day!
Also a small pack of smoked salmon, does 2 lunches and much cheaper than going to Gails or wherever for a sandwich.

I buy proper cultured butter for my home made sourdough and it really elevates it.

I buy Ren rose bath oil and body oil and it’s dreamy. Gorgeous gorgeous scent and my skin has never been better. I stretch the £30 ish pound set over the year with one bath a week and I exfoliate, shave, then run the bath and light candles. Then I get into my fresh made bed with 800+ thread count sheets. Perfection.

Every few months my DH will be away with work and I magically have the house to myself . So I go to Booths and pick up a load of snacks bits. Think raspberry vinegar baby beetroots, deli meats and cheese, nice coleslaw and some posh crisps. Then I have a couch picnic and watch my favourite series or movies.

Don’t forget a lovely dessert!

Oh yes, M&S do a lovely pot of Gooseberry fool, or it might be a gooseberry something else but I haven’t had one for ages

Totally thinking of treating myself to a fancy one at the Ritz or the Savoy next time I visit London. Have a feeling that won't be cheap though haha

I love a bar of Diptyque soap. It feels amazing, it last ages, it makes the bathroom smell gorgeous and I put the wrapper in my knicker drawer 😂

stayathomegardener · 28/05/2025 18:18

@Sodthesystemin my extensive experience of UK Pomegranate sourcing they are plentiful everywhere in season September to February, after that I find it’s limited to M and S or Waitrose.

@Debtfreemei do similar! Liberty’s beauty box and then advent and top up at Aldi! Love it.

Blablibladirladada · 28/05/2025 19:37

Recently I went to M&S with the kids and bought the few clothes they pointed out. No sale. No gift card.
I felt real nice.

BlueFlowers5 · 28/05/2025 19:54

Every now and then;

Posh W........e ready meal and dessert.
Posh bubble bath or shower gel.
Flowers in darkest winter.
Posh thick towels.

My treat is fruit fingers from m&s for the train home from work, £4.50 lovely

jaundicedoutlook · 28/05/2025 20:30

Freshly roasted coffee beans from the Algerian Coffee Store. Especially when they have the Kona in stock.

deste · 28/05/2025 21:19

I know its not expensive but i only use Bath and Body Works body cream. I have to get my son to get for me as he lives abroad or if we happen to go over, buy it in bulk. I have four on the go at once and use a different one each day. I also like to buy flowers for the house.

LoveHearts69 · 28/05/2025 21:26

Ooo I like this thread!

Fresh flowers for the table always make me feel happy.

We get all our meat from the local farm shop. More costly but we supplement with more veggie meals. It’s good quality and there’s something wholesome about going there.

Sounds a silly one but Olive oil. It’s quite expensive these days but feels a lot nicer/healthier to use in cooking than veg oils!

Oh yes, the toilets, especially when they have those little individual real hand towels and lovely hand lotion. You feel you’ve got your money’s worth for the price of your coffee! Also, they tend to use proper china cups and sometimes you get a little biscuit on the side 😀

I agree with the have a coffee/cup of tea and a bite to eat somewhere special like a fancy department store or smart hotel. It doesn't cost much more but it's more memorable and the loos are much nicer.

PaulKnickerless · 28/05/2025 21:34

You are so right about fresh flowers.

I forage for free cooking ingredients then copy what chefs do with them. Restaurant quality food at a fairly ordinary price.

Love this. When I was about 16, I used to love sitting in department store cafes reading. All I could afford was a coffee or tea, but I would nurse it for 2 hours so I got to sit in nice surroundings reading. (It wasn’t noisy because this was always in the middle of a weekday as I used to truant school and go into town - another story!)

Ruesy · 28/05/2025 21:56

I buy Lush bath products for a treat, i love the bath bombs and bubble bars.

CatteryCatz · 28/05/2025 22:03

I have White Company towels at home, they’re so soft. I also have a favourite mug from Emma Bridgewater.

I use Bed Head shampoo and conditioner, I get them discounted from Home Bargains. The bottles are huge and last months too.

I’m really enjoying the Sanctuary Spa spray body oil too. I much prefer that to body lotion. Dries quicker too.

I'm in London and book occasional day passes for various family clubs for my dcs. They have nice play areas, kids' activities and restaurants and an exclusive feel, but I'm not interested in committing to a year's membership. Some of them have trial memberships and you get the fee refunded if you cancel within 14 days so we've attended for a couple of weekends conpletely free.

Not sure what a family club is but love the idea

is this like a spa type place?
