has anyone seen this on the news?! What do we all think, it’s all a bit bizarre

In that mail video link at the beginning of the thread, just focus on the young woman airport worker. She reaches the door, sees it happen, and is hugely discomfited. She can't get away from them quickly enough and does that hair touching anxiety thing.

She did not witness a joke or anything good natured, imo.

WhatterySquash · 27/05/2025 00:22

Yes the "joking around" thing doesn't make sense - both the steward woman and Macron himself look upset and alarmed. If it was all fun and games he'd be smiling and engaging with it. Of course his PR people are going to tell him to put out some kind of minimising statement, and it would be very difficult for him to do anything else when he's just arrived on a foreign visit.

WynkenDeWorde · 27/05/2025 00:26

I also found it shocking and upsetting, and the claims that it’s just 'banter' or even 'gentle patting' are just deeply bizarre. That was a proper act of ill-temper.

Macron reels back and grabs the handle on the inside of the door as though he’s trying to steady himself (mentally and perhaps even physically) against the shock of realising that the cameras have just caught what was clearly never meant to be seen. The forced little smile and wave are reflex damage limitation. Then he moves back towards his wife, out of shot - we can only speculate as to what words were exchanged briefly between them at that point but I'm going with 'not friendly'.

Very bad.

Abusers ramp things up when they begin to lose control. I bet she's always threatening him with public exposure.
I've been abused and I can tell that wasn't the first time that she's done it.
I feel really sorry for him. Hopefully this will be the straw that broke the camel's back and he ditches her. That's one messed up relationship though. He was groomed from being a teenager in my eyes. I'd be devastated if that happened to my boys.

How can you actually tell that?

Not asking provocatively, just asking …

I agree, and as they walk down the airplane steps he offers her his arm and she ignores him. (A public humiliation, again). Look at his left hand (the one on the opposite side to his wife), it is clenched into a tight fist.

It's just a couple having a tiff, Emmanuelle's poise is submissive not hostile, the aggression appears to come from Bridgette. The French are far more physical in their emotions than us 'stiff upper lipped' Brits. I think we should just leave them alone, kinda tired of all this armchair criticism.I'd be more concerned about all the atrocities that are going on in the USA in plain sight under Trump than this private gone public article yet no-one seems to want to publicize this over here in the UK.

Sad to see how abused people are not believed first hand.

The excuses are sickening.

Which abused person is not being believed?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/05/2025 00:57

Fucking russia will be having a field day that’s for sure.

It's one thing to have this happen behind closed doors, which is unacceptable anyway, but before the eyes of the world is so awful. She surely knew the doors were open and the world could see.

The thing is though, even if the door hadn't been opened, it still wouldn't have been a private argument as they wouldn't have been the only people on that plane. In addition to the crew, presidential planes are full of people; staff, advisers and even journalists for some foreign visits. So whether the cabin door had been opened at an inopportune time or not, there were other people on that flight who must have witnessed whatever this interaction was and I'm surprised Mme Macron would have been so aggressive towards her husband in front of other people. It's all very odd, but whatever's going on in their marriage, I agree that this incident will be very undermining for his position as President of France.

The look of shame and horror on his face when he realised it had been seen.
Also, if that was a first time there'd have been an air of incredulity. He seemed more upset about being witnessed than stunned by force.

Public spaces were my ex's playground. Funnily enough, I had it before we were about to board a plane once. He kicked off and humiliated me as much as possible in front of all the passengers we were going to be spending the afternoon with. I can't explain it but it's the threat of embarrassing you that abusers seem to enjoy. He always did it before family events too.

My take on this with Macron is that she's losing her grip of him therefore, she's beginning to lose control of her own behaviour. There must have been an argument in front of the people on board (which would have been bad enough) but she lost awareness of the situation and was unable to contain it. The only thing that truly matters to abusers is keeping their victim in check.

Of course, he won't be a perfect "victim". Rumours of affairs have long circled him. However, it's not hard to see how their relationship was abusive from the very beginning.

2021x · 27/05/2025 01:19

We have to be careful, we are all projecting our own stuff on to that incident.

To me it looks aggressive, and he looks under pressure. Its hard for me to ignore that their relationship history started with coercion as he was at such a young age, she was his teacher, and her kids where in his class. Even if this aggression is a sign of deterioration in cognition, that history still remains.

M. Macron looks very unwell, her legs are the same as Judy Garlands before she died. I suspect we won't be seeing her in the spotlight any more after this trip.

sparkleghost · 27/05/2025 01:22

I was expecting this to be more ambiguous (hadn’t seen the actual footage until this post) but I’m pretty shocked. It seems clearly aggressive to me.

In my experience, obvious weight loss at that age normally precedes the end or the beginning of the end (nursing care).

Tigergirl80 · 27/05/2025 02:13

If that’s how she treats him in public imagine what she’s like at home towards him. But we also don’t know what lead up to why she did it.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 27/05/2025 02:27

His face says to me it isn't the first time she has done this, just the first time in public

It doesn't matter why Mme. Macron did it, no one should hit anyone.

There is no good reason to do that.

When I saw the footage I thought it's not the first time too.

It's awful.

As I said we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. How do we know he doesn’t hit her?

Waterweight · 27/05/2025 02:37

Looks like there trying to scrub the internet clean - swear I saw this come up a few times hours ago but when I googled it you have to be more specific

Violence doesn't excuse violence, however much pp on this thread try and twist it.

Talk about victim blaming 🙄 you can’t make excuses for that behaviour ever, doesn’t matter if it’s a man or woman.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/05/2025 02:48

I really felt for him. She humiliated him, definitely not the first incident. Unforgivable.

JIMER202 · 27/05/2025 03:18

I see a groomer continuing to abuse and humiliate her victim publicly.

TheAutumnCrow · 27/05/2025 03:52

The Independent headline is currently showing as ‘French President Macron looks stunned after wife shoves his face in viral caught-on-video ‘squabble’.’

Sub-heading is:
‘First lady apparently shoved French president in his face as they prepared to get off their aircraft’ - which seems more accurate than the earlier one.

Clafoutie · 26/05/2025 20:09

I don’t think that’s the case? I think it is just her uniform, and she looks to be part of the airport staff at Hanoi greeting the plane?

Yes Clafoutie, it was part of her uniform. Maybe to denote her rank/grade so to speak, and she was part of the airport staff.
