If somebody gave you £500- what would you do with it?

Just that really
Imagine someone gave you £500 in cash and told you to spend it - what would you buy?
House stuff allowed too but not paying off any debt - so you have to buy something.
Bonus points for links!

Sensible me would put it towards getting tbe brakes done on the car.Indulgent me would buy a little summerhouse or pergola, or a week all inclusive somewhere warm but not hot.

Snickersnack1 · 24/05/2025 10:22

I’d go to see a West End show and sit in the premium seats. Could be as much as £500 if there are two of you. Any left over money on a pre-show meal.

If I do this I’d say I’d prefer/hope she spends it on something nice for herself. If she has an important expense like a boiler and it would ease her mind to pay for it out of your money do you prefer she doesn’t do it to honour your wishes, or she does and feels guilty?

🙄. And here’s me thinking I’d done something nice for my closest friend. I know her financial situation as well as I know my own - her and her husband can manage expenses but as I said, she’s never had any money to spend just on the things that I know she would love for herself. I would be very happy for her to spend the money on a new car, or anything that would just be for her and that she would never be able to afford for herself.

Welikebeingcosy · 24/05/2025 13:37

I'd pay someone to put my daughter's trampoline up for me and then use the rest for a nice take away and movie night at home.

OK sorry

Book into a spa by myself, turn off all devices, spend everyday either in the spa, asleep or eating room service. (Feeling quite burnt out ATM)

AllAroundMyGarden · 24/05/2025 15:05

A bit boring, but I’d keep it for my hair appointments for the rest of the year.

My cut and highlights have gone up to £150.

mehmehma · 23/05/2025 19:03

This is peak MN. 😂😂

Why? It’s an answer to the question. If someone gave me 500 quid, I’d give it to my nephew and his partner who are not in as good a financial position as I am and have a newborn so they are watching their pennies. I don’t need anything right now, and they do so it’s a no brainer.

Why is that answer less acceptable than “I’d buy some handbags”?

JudgeBread · 24/05/2025 15:08

I'd probably just fill the freezer. Money is tight at the moment and we've almost completely gone through all our frozen food, I like having a freezer full so I know if I hit a financial snag of any kind I'll still be able to feed my family.

Quite boring I know. If I didn't have to think about food I'd probably splurge on a really good Lego set to build on one of our Family Game Nights

lilaclemon · 24/05/2025 15:10

I’d give it the great young man who has been cutting our grass since he was 14. He starts university this year so it’d go to him. He’s going to get £100 as a gift, but £600 would be great for him.

Dairymilkisminging · 24/05/2025 15:35

I'd pay for a night nanny for a break or a weekend away somewhere fun and exciting for the kids

Mostlyboymum42 · 24/05/2025 18:12

My partner sold some old gold and gave me the just over £500 a few weeks ago. I’ve bought food shopping and clothes/shoes for the kids. Nothing exciting.

CalicoPusscat · 24/05/2025 18:18

Ooh in terms of purchases I'd like 3 things in the sales which total £120 excl postage. I could do PayPal in 3 so although I really shouldn't as a povvo I am tempted. They'd total £400 not in sales.

Summer dressing gown, perfume and silver bag. After that if I really had to spend it not save/towards loan then food.

Droplet789 · 24/05/2025 18:20

I’ve had a similar thing, I was looking at buying a Mulberry handbag from Vinted. Failing that, do you have any hobbies or go and try a few things to see if they could be a hobby? Gardening, bike, paddle board, skiing? You could treat yourself to some new kit

silverstorm101 · 24/05/2025 18:25

I'd buy myself a bottle of V&R Bonbon perfume as I can't justify paying almost £100 for a perfume. Then I'd split the rest between my kids and take them to a big toy shop.

CalicoPusscat · 24/05/2025 18:45

You have just made up my mind @LunaDeBallona! I will get the summer dressing gown and bag and forgo the perfume, paying over 3 months.

Notlookingforwardtosummer · 24/05/2025 18:46

Sensory stuff, books on autism, yoto cards.

Abbyant · 24/05/2025 18:57

Take the whole family for a nice meal out and buy the dcs some new clothes.

I've got my eye on this. Ps. Love the handbag, op. But not the small size! Medium looks good.

Jiski · 24/05/2025 19:40

I’d have a weeks parental leave so I could spend more time with my son.

LunaDeBallona · 24/05/2025 19:45

I can’t thank you enough for all your ideas.
As a HUGE F1 fan I’m intrigued by the Williams factory experience and will be looking at that so thank you @Isesgirl .
Im humbled by some of you @AntaresAltered - I send my love.
I’ve buried a child so I know how hard it feels (mine was a baby - I think to loose a teenager must be even harder).
Love the 10 weeks of £ 50 idea @tana433 but fear I would end up buying stuff for daughter!
Im going to sit on it for a week or two just incase life throws some shit at me - but I’m hoping that it won’t & this can buy me something delightful.
Thanks ladies - you’ve been fab.

I'm not in need of £500. I'd make an anonymous donation to a single mum I know who needs some work doing on her car.

I've been thinking of doing it anyway, but unsure whether it might freak her out. If I had a windfall, I'd take that as an omen that I should do it.

Edited

When I was out of work and a single mum a lonnnnng time ago, someone put £200 in a Christmas card and anonymously posted it through my letter box.

It just said 'do what you want or need'.

I paid a bill, bought a basic grocery shop and got a takeaway with the kids.

I still wonder who it was. It REALLY made a difference. So if you can spare it, do it!

So that's also what I'd do again.

It did freak me out a bit though, but it is still one of the kindest things anyone has done for me.
