If somebody gave you £500- what would you do with it?

Just that really
Imagine someone gave you £500 in cash and told you to spend it - what would you buy?
House stuff allowed too but not paying off any debt - so you have to buy something.
Bonus points for links!

Botox

BobbyBiscuits · 23/05/2025 21:08

I bought my first pair of designer shoes ever from a resale site, they are too small. Sob.
So I'd buy a brand new pair in the size up. Even though it's not my size usually.
I think I'd have to chip in a bit as they're a bit more than that new, but at least I would try them on in a shop and know which size to get.

MereNoelle · 23/05/2025 21:10

I have actually just come into an unexpected £500 and I spent it on hiring a skip 😂

Isesgirl · 23/05/2025 21:15

Go to the Williams Formula One factory to watch a race live with the engineers explaining everything as the race happens. I'm a huge formula one fan but will never be able to afford to go to an actual race as the prices are insane.

You can do the factory/race experience /Williams museum tour with some iconic cars and such, for £300 and the balance would pay for my train and a hotel.

Would be an unforgettable dream for me but with our current financial commitments, spending that much on a "treat" isn't going to happen any time soon.

@DiaryofWimpy I'm currently under a duvet that's like a cloud From soak and sleep.

I'd say having this pleasure every night is exciting.
Op id definitely use it for something that will enhance your day to day like a beautiful duvet, better pillows silk pillows, high thread count bedding, better trainers, better Hoover, lights, get something fixed upgrade etc.

Or into holiday fund

Maybemoby · 23/05/2025 21:41

I would use it for my side business. I could do with some new tools/materials and I'd love to be doing it full time one day.

I worked for a MH team and the psychiatrist attached to it was hugely into his fountain pens, I always enjoyed talking to him about them

Ah that’s lovely! The fountain pen collecting community is quite small, & perhaps obviously it’s quite a quiet hobby, an overwhelming majority of us are read/write learners so we have lots of teachers, academics, medics, architects etc. We connect up online but often don’t know many other FP nerds IRL outside of pen meets so we are absolutely thrilled when someone asks us about our pens!

PoodlesRUs · 24/05/2025 02:58

@LunaDeBallona get the cherry ombre bag! I've been stalking that one for at least a year, maybe two. Short of a windfall, I'll not be able to get it but somebody should! It's beautiful.

AntaresAltered · 24/05/2025 03:08

I would put it towards a headstone for my teenage son who died recently. Just had to pay for a funeral, so need to save up for a decent headstone.

Velmy · 24/05/2025 04:30

I'd put it towards the next pair of trainers I'm planning on adding to my already ridiculous collection 😄

hangingonfordearlife1 · 24/05/2025 04:34

erm probably a big shop. £500 is not a lot of money these days. i could spend that easily on pjs pants and basics in primark for the whole family

beasmithwentworth · 24/05/2025 05:42

I’d get my teeth whitened

ThumbTowers · 24/05/2025 05:46

I would spend it on a decent pair of proper walking trainers/shoes/boots, some wireless earbuds and a breathable waterproof jacket, all to support the fact that I enjoy walking and need to do it more.

Anything left over I would spend on my hobbies. So would buy a stack of books that are on my list to read, some jigsaw puzzles and some craft kits.

I’d buy a fountain pen from an incredible independent company I know. They’ve just brought out a new limited edition & it’s £450. They’re made in very small numbers & it may sell out before I’ve saved enough to get it so I’d whip in now!

<sits quietly as possibly the only fountain pen collector on the board & awaits posters telling me I can get a plastic Parker for a tenner in WH Smith> 😀

Ooh please tell me which one or DM me

OutandAboutMum1821 · 24/05/2025 06:48

I’d split it in half and add it to my children’s junior ISAs for when they are 18.

SleepQuest33 · 24/05/2025 06:52

I would treat all of us at home to new mattresses, not just any mattress but those expensive ones that are supposed to be amazing for sleep.

Pigeon31 · 24/05/2025 06:55

Am on a tight (but manageable) budget at the mo since OH was made redundant so I'd spend it on going out for nice meals - maybe space them out a bit one a month.

PomegranateVase · 24/05/2025 07:09

My head is telling me that I should either:

Pay off my credit card (just under £500)

or

Put it toward buying an American style fridge

My heart is telling me I’d:

Buy a pair of Chanel sunglasses (the ones I like are around £400) and use the rest for treats like champagne and truffles.

Teanandtoast · 24/05/2025 07:15

Take my family away for a few days, I've got a wishlist ready to go

Tana433 · 24/05/2025 07:21

I would split in into 10 weekly £50 treats. A new book, hair done, coffee and cake in a nice cafe, box of lovely chocolates i wouldnt normally buy myself, bunch of flowers. A few little luxuries to brighten up every week.

Pickled21 · 24/05/2025 08:00

I'd book the big panto production in the nearby city. We used to go as a family of 4 and then once we had dc3 I would stay home with her or dh would and the other parent would take the older two. As a family of 5 it's hard to justify and so we are going to try a local production instead. After that I'd take my eldest to see, 'The lion, the witch and the wardrobe' at the theatre. I'd take the kids for meal out and if there is anything left I'd do a topic up shop of baking supplies, pasta, frozen food and cleaning supplies.

If it was solely to be spent on me I'd buy myself a bag or put some away for a beauty advent calendar or two.

So sorry for your loss.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 24/05/2025 08:25

Put it towards a Gucci bag.

My best friend has always struggled financially in the 40 years that I’ve known her and although she’s got by and has no debts, she’s never had any money to spend on nice frivolous things for herself. She’s always been very proud and has never let me help her out with anything money related, so I’ve left her a nice chunk of money in my will on the condition that she only spends it on things for herself, and doesn’t use it on general household expenditure . I would love to be able to see her enjoying it.

If I do this I’d say I’d prefer/hope she spends it on something nice for herself. If she has an important expense like a boiler and it would ease her mind to pay for it out of your money do you prefer she doesn’t do it to honour your wishes, or she does and feels guilty?
