If somebody gave you £500- what would you do with it?

Just that really
Imagine someone gave you £500 in cash and told you to spend it - what would you buy?
House stuff allowed too but not paying off any debt - so you have to buy something.
Bonus points for links!

The whole thread is peak Mumsnet.

This question is posted all the time but I've never heard of anyone in real life being given £X and told that they must spend it. Yet it seems that it happens on here almost daily.

My best friend has always struggled financially in the 40 years that I’ve known her and although she’s got by and has no debts, she’s never had any money to spend on nice frivolous things for herself. She’s always been very proud and has never let me help her out with anything money related, so I’ve left her a nice chunk of money in my will on the condition that she only spends it on things for herself, and doesn’t use it on general household expenditure . I would love to be able to see her enjoying it.

Ideally I’d bank it and buy premium bonds , but if I had to buy something I’d put it towards the iPad I’m just about to buy as mine needs replacing .

Owlteapot · 23/05/2025 19:52

Weekend away, preferably somewhere with a hot tub

LizzyLine · 23/05/2025 19:56

Three nights in Turin at October half term that I've got my eye on.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/05/2025 19:56

Pay it into the joint account and spend it on our normal living costs. It will pare a little bit off the overdraft.

Mymanyellow · 23/05/2025 19:58

Put it towards a new sofa.

Davros · 23/05/2025 19:59

@LunaDeBallona lovely handbag, great colour. Go for it!

whitewineandsun · 23/05/2025 20:01

Pay off the credit card for the month and the rest, around half, saved towards a trip in the summer.

namechangeGOT · 23/05/2025 20:04

It would go into my pots for my:

Botox
Hair
profhilo

None of this donating stuff. But then I’m not gonna come into 500 quid and I have to fund the above myself.

A carpet for the spare room. And underlay. The one currently there was there when we moved in (and was shabby) 25 years ago.

DH now sleeps in the spare room because we both snore and sleep better apart. But I've got the nice room and his is a bit tatty. I don't think he's in the least bit bothered, but I feel a bit bad for him.

Some meals out on holiday. I have a teenage boy, eating out is never cheap!

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 23/05/2025 20:28

Personalised number plate.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 23/05/2025 20:28

Lots of ideas:

Towards a winter holiday in the Canaries or

Some new bedding for my new bed or

Pay off some debt or

put it in the house buying savings or

Buy some nice clothes.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 23/05/2025 20:29

I'd buy some hand made watercolour paints from Deep Deep Light in Latvia.

mylovedoesitgood · 23/05/2025 20:38

I’d put it towards an iPhone Pro Max.

mumda · 23/05/2025 20:39

A short break away to go and see my friend. And some chocolate.

Pricelessadvice · 23/05/2025 20:43

I’ve had a rough couple of months financially with unplanned expenses so £500 would get me out of a big hole that I’m currently stuck in and stressing about. It would mean I wouldn’t be hovering just above zero and living hand to mouth, like I am at the moment.
£500 would be such a godsend right now, I can’t even tell you 🙁

I’d buy a fountain pen from an incredible independent company I know. They’ve just brought out a new limited edition & it’s £450. They’re made in very small numbers & it may sell out before I’ve saved enough to get it so I’d whip in now!

<sits quietly as possibly the only fountain pen collector on the board & awaits posters telling me I can get a plastic Parker for a tenner in WH Smith> 😀

I worked for a MH team and the psychiatrist attached to it was hugely into his fountain pens, I always enjoyed talking to him about them

icebearforpresident · 23/05/2025 20:52

I have £875 left on a credit card I’m paying off, I’d put it towards that and be grateful to have an opportunity to clear it a couple of months earlier than expected.

FunkyMonks · 23/05/2025 20:54

I was given £500 recently and it went towards the cost of having to replace two windows in the house. so sadly not on luxury things but did get put towards something good in the long run.

TeaAndToast8 · 23/05/2025 20:55

I’d do a Shirley Valentine, note on the fridge.. Of to Greece.

If somebody gave you £500- what would you do with it?
SGBK4862 · 23/05/2025 20:59

I could spend £500 now if I wanted to, so I'd probably just add it to my savings. But if it HAD to be spent, either an upmarket hotel for the weekend or theatre tickets plus meal for the family.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/05/2025 20:59

@Middlechild3 have you looked at the Saris Boness racks? They do single bike options and and 2 or 3 bike optiions. They say they fit any car!

faerietales · 23/05/2025 21:00

Weekend away in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

K8Davidson · 23/05/2025 21:05

I’d put it in premium bonds as that’s what we use to save for our home improvements. I need a new front door!
