I do wonder if Labour would ever look at proportional representation.
I don't think they would have anything to lose, and it would certainly be something radical.

Reform wouldn't oppose it.

It would just add an interesting mix to our politics.

The problem with PR is that, in its purest form, it would mean that Reflux have about 100 seats in parliament.

its a bit of self deprecating humour about the Blair years. Polenta is Italian peasant food by origin, but got elevated during the Blair years in rather expensive Islington restaurants. It’s basically porridge

I never did like the runny baby food/ staph aureus ooze version. I prefer the set, grilled version. By this point you just have stodgy corn pasta but much more hard work than pasta. I last bothered over 20 years ago, before DS1 turned my life upside down and I though bugger that malarkey, where's the oven chips?

Yes! The grilled version is nicer but so much faffiness for so little reward.

I came home from choir and my menfolk were running around the living room shouting and hugging. And yet complaining.

It's very hard to ever know if Spurs fans are actually happy.

Big Ange didn't look very happy in the press conference. He looked as though he wanted to tell the journalists to piss off. I don't blame him.

countrygirl99 · 22/05/2025 06:20

Must admit I've only had ot on lemon cake form who h is delicious and well worth it even if you don't have to worry about gluten. Trouble is the recipe I have makes a catering size cake and takes a huge quantity of eggs. Must find a smaller recipe.

Not so much firing as renaming and shuffling about a bit, in our new Reflux council. The article doesn't mention it but someone posted on reddit that the 3 flags at county Hall are now the union flag, the county flag to replace the council flag and the George Cross and the Pride ad has gone.

To start with, no doubt many would have the whip withdrawn or leave the party.

Jenrick on GMB this morning.

He’s an odious toad. I just cannot listen to him without getting the rage!

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2025 08:03

Did they have a mural that needed painting over?

I'm still amazed he was able to hang on after the business with Richard Desmond and the community levy. Extraordinary really.

Tories moving ever closer to Reform, soon the two parties will become as one.

I just hope Labour can avoid such a mistake.

Behind the scenes the biggest all party parliamentary group by far is that looking at electoral reform. There is a broad consensus that it's needed and sooner rather than later.

(Remember how "Reform" made such a big deal about how unfair the electoral system was ? In what should be a clear beacon their less bright supporters, they haven't bothered to join it. I guess the fishing quota rule means something different in Farageland)

Of course, regardless of the ruling the government can proceed if it so wished.

Not only can the UK ignore foreign courts. It can ignore it's own if it likes. Something to confound any Reform types with. As if they cared.

Doesn’t international law trump a UK court?

In this instance, I would find that very unlikely! We are a dualist system. Concluding a treaty is a right reserved to the Crown, ie crown prerogative exercised only by government.

As a last minute injunction the HC would have had little choice but to grant a hearing.

Cheguevarahamster · 22/05/2025 09:22

Happy one year anniversary of Rishi's general election announcement for all who celebrate.

Edited

Thank you. As you can see, my knowledge of our legal system would fit on a stamp.

Net migration has fallen by almost 50% according to today's new ONS figures, at 431,000 for the year ending Dec 2024, down from 860,000 for the same period a year earlier. It has fallen by 297,000 since the last ONS figures 6 months ago, for YE June 2024.

Suddenly the ONS will become a discredited source.

I would put money on that.

bombastix · 22/05/2025 10:07

Woah. Well that’s something of a game changer of immigration

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2025 10:55

Well, obviously that wont be enough.

The Tory/Reform argument will pivot to a binding cap on immgration and/or getting numbers under ten's of thousands.

Because it will never be enough.

bombastix · 22/05/2025 11:13

I know: the key Reform audience will never be happy. But whatever they claim yet they are not a majority.

if Labour match this with their white paper and put in training and skills for British people then I think this is a good practical narrative for the next election. Not just xenophobia

Piggywaspushed · 22/05/2025 11:29

The BBCis already falling over itself to say negative stuff...
