I don’t think anyone with a brain wants to get the armed forces into a position where they are told to break international law. The kind of precedent it would set would be frightening.
I know the issue about boats is perceived to be difficult, but starting to give legal waivers to the State about how it treats certain classes of people sufficient to protect from prosecution or otherwise is not good. You would have to extend this to most of the Civil Service too.
Be careful what you wish for. The law is difficult, but I would prefer fast track asylum return to safe country arrangements, curtailing of Article 8 application (which is lawful) at appeal than watch the armed services debase themselves with these sub colonial fantasies of some od Reform.
I think Labour would do themselves a huge favour if they considered who takes responsibility for asylum housing, because local councils in Kent cannot cope.
And let’s be honest, unless you have been to the Kent coast and seen some of the impact, it’s easy to say oh it’s temporary or okay. I go often and there is a growing nationalist feeling. There is a lot of deprivation. Reform aren’t doing well because people in Kent are doing well, put it that way.
