I’m not sure that’s up to date - binning Rwanda is still showing blue.

It’s been updated recently as the numbers have changed. Maybe it has to be completely unravelled before it goes green.
Edit: it looks like it won’t go green until the relevant law is repealed which has to wait until the replacement is voted into law. So the plan is dead, but it doesn’t count as achieved until it’s legally dead.

Probably. I thought it was done and dusted.

Latest YouGov Westminster voting intention (1-2 June)

Ref: 28% (-1 from 26-27 May)
Lab: 22% (+1)
Con: 18% (-1)
Lib Dem: 17% (+2)
Green: 9% (-2)
SNP: 3% (+1)

Reform losing a bit of ground now after the local election bounce.

If you go on the yougov website and delve deeper, the only cohort where Reform has a clear lead is in 50-64 age bracket. 65+ seem to be turning back to the Tories. Reform and Tories neck and neck there.

The Home Office have published some data on channel crossing numbers and what they call "red days". Red days are when the Met Office predicts there is a 55% or higher likelihood of crossings.

The Home Office will argue there has been a particularly high number of "red days" in the last year.

Ah Oakeshott's Telegraph article seems to be the reason of all these anti France comments

If Reform win Hamilton, we are doooomed.

They won't, though.

Sometimes positive changes are made without big fanfare. This made it into the local rag.

How about a tweak to the planning regulations (note: not laws) so that when permission is granted for a development of new houses, the developer has (say) a year to break ground and start selling houses. If that year lapses the developer loses the permission. Separately we can then look to tax undeveloped land.

The number of houses could be built tomorrow (i.e. the land has been purchased and permission granted would halve the "housing crisis" overnight.

Karistyleaftea · 03/06/2025 14:37

Isn't Nigel Farage's long term partner French?
You would think Ms Oakshott would be more considered in her random musings.

BIossomtoes · 03/06/2025 14:38

Such a sensible idea @SerendipityJane.

The Dutch Reform party (Wilder's PVV) has quit government, as many expected would happen. All because his asylum plans were ridiculous and his party is not very popular anymore.

Good. Let's hope it happens here.

Love this idea, can I steal it?

However can this wait until I get my roof and new bathroom done 😀

It would also stop developers from leaving sites in a derelict and sometimes dangerous state for years on end.

Last time I toured new builds* every sales agent made a big point that only x hundred homes were being released a year to "secure your investment". This was holding back about 3,500 houses in the Black Country alone.

If the UK is happy with nonsense like that (checks - it is) then it's a puzzle to me why people are upset over housing.

*New builds that were universally shit. For a country that is obsessed by houses and house prices, it's odd that people are willing to put up with such poor quality.

DuncinToffee · 04/06/2025 08:29

Until the next Taco tantrum

White House announces overnight that UK to get reprieve from 50% tariffs slapped on steel & aluminium imports into US, and will remain at 25% for now.

But could yet increase to 50% in July if Trump feels UK has not adhered to parts of yet to be implemented US/ UK trade deal.

I wonder what the people who complained the EU were bullying during the Brexit negotiations think of Trump.

Reform did say what they would do in their 2024 manifesto regarding immigration but I can't remember all of it and can't be arsed to look it up. Whether they would be able to do what they say they would, well we won't find out unless they get into power.

But then Labour haven't done what they promised, it's just getting worse and we're paying even more money.

We all know that more boats cross when the sea is calm so why only put 4 officers along the coastline. The French don't give a shit really, they must be laughing at us.

The French have on patrol, in the Calais area alone, over 800 officers, up from 200 prior to any UK/French agreement.

You don't remember/can't be arsed... yet you support them...weird.

But i'll tell you .. they want to return migrants to France, Tice went as far as to say Royal Marines would be used to do this... June 2024.

One can only imagine what France/EU would do about this... any guesses???

Wouldn't the Royal Marines refuse? They can't be asked to break international law and surely this would do so?
