Nope... the highest number was 1305 in September 2022.... details matters unless you wish to mislead?

Unfortunately, the recent spells of calm weather mean more crossings and unless the French get particularly heavy handed, the crossings will continue, all we can do on this side, is pressurise the French as much as we can and deport back to their countries of origin those who fail asylum, which is why a very quick but thorough asylum process is vital, something the Tories failed to have.

Reform cannot stop the boats, nothing any of its leaders, has said is credible..

Pressurise the French? They don’t give a fuck🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😳

itsgettingweird · 02/06/2025 20:50

Also has anyone else seen the clip of Jenrick on the escalator in the tube station? I saw it this morning with the sound on and the lad says he has a knife. Susanna Reid was brilliant at not allowing him to wriggle out of why he decided not to report that when he has evidence. Especially as justice secretary! (Shadow)

So did Labour lie in their manifesto then when Starmer said he would take back control of our borders is that what you're implying. If the crossings are weather dependent why are we paying millions to the French.

People are going to try to cross the Channel.
The French will try to stop them.
When it's poor weather, the weather will also stop the crossings.
When it's good weather, people will try to cross.

ilovesooty · 02/06/2025 20:59

Migration was up last year and by 115% since Brexit. Perhaps Farage can explain that.

So many people obsessed with the boats are just dense. An article yesterday on local criminals sentenced in court last week had loads of comments bleating "Vote Reform" "stop the boats " and claiming they were all migrants. Most of them were white and British.

Not sure where you have got that from. Reform can't stop the boats unless they get elected in 4 years time. I thought everyone knew that. It was said on this thread loads of times in the run up to the local elections. Although Reform getting in is looking more and more likely as Starmer has made a complete mess of his "smash the gangs" policy. Nearly 1,200 came over on Saturday, the highest number in one day since 2018 and more migrants have crossed the channel this year so far than in 2024 up to the same period of time.

It was on the leaflets that Reform sent to households prior to council elections. Their first item. Bullshit, I know, but it is what they promised.

The boats have been coming over for seven years. The Tories weren't able to stop them in six years, yet you expect Labour to do so within 10 months?

Do you remember what the weather was like for the first few months of 2024? Of course the crossings will be up, because the weather is more favourable this year.

PandoraSocks · 02/06/2025 21:20

Just to illustrate my point about the weather during the first few months of 2024 🤣🤣🤣

The French stop about 50% of attempted crossings but they don't get involved when 100 mainly men run for a boat and there is only 4 of them....

Look what happened when the Greeks tried towing a large boat? 100s died.

Still no insight into how Reform would stop the boats...

derxa · 02/06/2025 21:22

Keir’ s paid the French to do fuck all

Alexandra2001 · 02/06/2025 21:26

In any discussion it does help if some sort of thought is used occasionally

Anyone who wishes to stop paying the French, had better get ready for far more migrants coming to the UK via small boats.

DuncinToffee · 02/06/2025 21:28

I see nobody has mentioned Labour's defence strategy, too sensible?

LlynTegid · 02/06/2025 21:32

I think this is one thing where the broad thrust has cross-party support, so perhaps that is why.

Hope for once we can get the defence procurement right, as this seems to have been an issue for a very long time.

TBH its simply not enough, considering the threat, so yet another Tory failure Labour are going to have to try and fix.

This should have all been started 3 years ago, instead the Tories gave us an £11bn NI cut....

Hopefully the money earmarked for housing/living conditions will actually be spent on such things.... some of the housing military families have to put up with is shocking.

2x NI cuts.
yes, military housing can be shocking poor. We’ve needed investment in military housing for a long time.

Remember Johnson joking about tanks only a few months before the invasion of Ukraine?

With the extra millions that we're paying France, as well as the extra money paid to the new Border Enforcement Officer or whatever title Starmer has given him and the extra staff employed to help said officer I expect some improvement in 11 months. The fact that the situation is even worse is ridiculous.

The millions paid to France was a deal struck by Sunak in 2023 not Starmer, was it not?

LlttledrummergirI · 02/06/2025 22:43

At least Starmers doing something. Reform in Kent let the numbers increase. Broken promises.

But then it was those Brexshiteer promises that mean that we have to pay all that money to France. We didn't have to before the numpties bought the snake oil...

I'd have liked to hope it's improved since I was a child. I had the joy of living in a concrete prefab and it was blooming cold in winter (and on the infamous June day when it snowed). It was. Demolished years ago.

There's places in Co Durham where National Coal Board built prefabs still stand, though.

I believe these ones are examples of "steel houses". Some even have metal roofs!

Our NCB house was traditional construction but when we changed the front door, we discovered that there was cinder block up there in place of a lintel. One swiftly ruined carpet as it went everywhere!

It was a deal struck by Sunak.

Reform are showing how useless they are weeks after their so called 'historic council election results". They are an embarrassment with already 33 by elections in the pipeline, cost £20,000 average for each election to the tax payer total c£660,000. Shocking waste of YOUR money.

Yet, BOATS!

itsgettingweird · 03/06/2025 04:28

derxa · 02/06/2025 21:02

The French will try to stop them. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

They will as they have down when the boats are launched from a beach where the asylum seekers are trying to board.

They can’t do anything to an already floating craft. The smugglers have changed tack to circumnavigate this.

All governments have promised to stop it. None so far have succeeded because it isn’t an easy thing to do.
