I think it was this statement of intent to really caught my attention

“We should drastically reduce immigration, reducing low-skill immigration by significantly raising salary thresholds; closing the corrupt student visa mill system; and ending the exploitation of the asylum system, if necessary prioritising domestic democratic politics over the rule of international lawyers.”

I imagine Reform voters would imagine that doesn’t go far enough, but for a middle of the road party it’s a big shift.

If this is the direction the Labour Party is taking they’ve definitely lost this lifelong Labour voter. I don’t imagine for one moment Alexandra and I are the only ones.

Notonthestairs · 02/06/2025 10:28

But it isnt the direction Labour are going in - the article makes that clear, quoting from both the equalities and the disability ministers.

It's the equivalent of any of the Conservative pressure groups - ERG etc - getting articles in the Telegraph outlining what they want to happen in the hope of nudging the leadership along.

Starmer is definitely adjusting policy in response to Reform. It might not be to the extent Blue Labour would like now but there’s four years until we vote again, who knows where we’ll be in 2029? It’s making me feel distinctly uneasy.

Reads like a Trump press release.

I can quite happily vote for another party if I want to. I'm not beholden to Labour. (I've never really been anything other then the Liberal DM was ...)

Piggywaspushed · 02/06/2025 11:16

Starmer can adjust policy all he likes. I don't think many Reform voters will listen/notice/realise. And the machine that is Farage and co will make sure they spin it.

This.

and he needs to watch out. Every time he makes a further right announcement Farage comes back with something that will attract the left - for example 2 child benefit cap being lifted.

Reform aren’t here to rule with an extreme RW approach. They are here to disrupt the status quo of Tory/Lab governments it’s a game to them. They do t have any policies, will come back to us to about any policies they are questioned about and are totally against the benefits bill but will stop benefits cap.

bombastix · 02/06/2025 13:45

I think you have to watch the polls really. If Labour start to claw back and the Tories remain flatlining or declining, then this messaging may be quite successful even if people are not too open.

Reform at 31%
Labour 23%
Tory 17%
Lib Dem 13%
Green 10%

placemats · 02/06/2025 13:52

Reform led Nottinghamshire and Kent county councils have important meetings cancelled by Reform.

Blue Labour is an outlier tiny group (that no-one should take seriously).

Willowkins · 02/06/2025 14:33

Kent also the first to have a DOGE-type audit. I'm so glad we're not merging with them anytime soon.

Kugelblitz · 02/06/2025 15:22

Anyone seen this ? Surprised that John McDonnell would do this, seemingly Corbs signed it then thought better…

If I were at Kent Council, I think I would be strongly coughing the one word

"GDPR"

Except as Donald Trump has shown, it's possible to flood the legal system during which time you can wreak havoc.

And the UK is particularly vulnerable to this tactic, having spent fuck all of fuck all on it's legal system for decades.

MsJinks · 02/06/2025 16:16

Wonder which one of the new councillors thought this up, and found freebie folk to do it 🤔

Reading about Farages Doge in Kent. I thought that they were elected to stop the boats- haven't small boat crossings to Kent increased since Reform took charge. What are they doing to fix this? They've clearly made it worse.

Not sure where you have got that from. Reform can't stop the boats unless they get elected in 4 years time. I thought everyone knew that. It was said on this thread loads of times in the run up to the local elections. Although Reform getting in is looking more and more likely as Starmer has made a complete mess of his "smash the gangs" policy. Nearly 1,200 came over on Saturday, the highest number in one day since 2018 and more migrants have crossed the channel this year so far than in 2024 up to the same period of time.

And meanwhile immigration overall has halved... But nobody wants to mention that.

We still don't have safe legal asylum routes, so of course people are going to come by boat. And the % of asylum seekers granted asylum is still high.

Unless of course you believe they're all lying.

Now that we have Reform councils, I hope they use those 4 years to utterly fuck up and make fools of themselves. Their planned DOGE style illegal data grab in Kent is going to bite them on the arse, and so it should.

MaybeNotBob · 02/06/2025 19:40

Deform will promise everything.

And deliver nothing.

Unfortunately, the interminably stupid will still vote for them...

Sorry, I forgot the sarcasm alert.

You've just agreed that more boats have arrived since reform said in the local elections that they would stop them. Are you saying they lied?

Of course it's ridiculous that they promised something outside of their control. Glad you agree.

I'm still happy to give Labour a chance to enact their plans. This is a big problem, and having better relationships with the EU countries will help. That is clearly happening.

I'm going to put responsibility for the boats on the party that won Kent by promising to stop them, with no ability to do anything about it. Bloody reform, bloody useless.

My local Reform candidate didn't mention anything about boat crossings or immigration, it was more about issues affecting the local area. He didn't actually win though, it was the Lib Dems. I think he came second.

I haven't agreed with anything so not sure why you're trying to twist things. Maybe it's because you can't admit that Starmer has completely fucked up re migrants crossing the channel since last year. He talked about "taking back control of our borders" but it's obvious that he's completely lost control of them.

DuncinToffee · 02/06/2025 20:04

Any ideas how the boats can be stopped @2dogsandabudgie ?

Nope... the highest number was 1305 in September 2022.... details matters unless you wish to mislead?

Unfortunately, the recent spells of calm weather mean more crossings and unless the French get particularly heavy handed, the crossings will continue, all we can do on this side, is pressurise the French as much as we can and deport back to their countries of origin those who fail asylum, which is why a very quick but thorough asylum process is vital, something the Tories failed to have.

Reform cannot stop the boats, nothing any of its leaders, has said is credible..

Starmer hasn’t lost control of our borders.

He hasn’t yet succeeded in regaining the control that the Tory’s created and lost.

Remember that small boats happened because of Brexit. They replaced the lorry’s because no one has yet created safe alternative routes for asylum seekers .

And record numbers are coming over because the French were paid to stop them, so now the smugglers are coming from elsewhere and getting the asylum seekers to swimming to the boat as the French police aren’t allowed to intercept boats that are already on the water.

The problems these criminal gangs will keep exploiting the system all the time until we can catch up. It’s easy money for them.

o was really pleased to see Ed Balls correcting Andrew Pearce this morning when he was claiming the French just stand by watching and laughing and taking photos.
