Shame he isn't so quick to go after tax dodgers.

It's amazing that with being the third largest party in Parliament, the Lib Dems are not polling well, though I do understand that they don't have the funds that Labour and the Conservatives have.

The orange won because of the Republican Party mandate.

How can Reform win?

I'm thinking the LibDems will pickup the centre ground abandoned by the Tories chasing Reform where disgruntled Labour voters live. I would cheerfully vote LibDem if needed.

Meanwhile, for culture Friday, here is a poem Robert Graves would surely have written about disappearing votes had be been able to imagine the shitshow of the Tories in 2025.

These acres, always again lost
By every new ordnance-survey
And searched for at exhausting cost
Of time and thought, are still away.

They have their paper-substitute –
Intercalation of an inch
At the so-many-thousandth foot:
And no one parish feels the pinch.

But lost they are, despite all care,
And perhaps likely to be bound
Together in a piece somewhere,
A plot of undiscovered ground.

Invisible, they have the spite
To swerve the tautest measuring-chain
And the exact theodolite
Perched every side of them in vain.

Yet, be assured, we have no need
To plot these acres of the mind
With prehistoric fern and reed
And monsters such as heroes find.

Maybe they have their flowers, their birds,
Their trees behind the phantom fence,
But of a substance without words:
To walk there would be loss of sense.

And this is where PR might just come in.

Given a preference, where would Reform come in when it comes to Lib Dem and Labour voters. Also Conservative voters...

There is broad support for electoral reform from all parties except Reform - it's the largest all party parliamentary group. So progress could be quite quick.

All sides (present) agree that the current system is not sustainable for future elections.

Watch this space, as they say.

YouGov

https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/51504-do-britons-support-shifting-to-proportional-representation

Britons tend to say it is more important for seats to be allocated proportionally between parties (46%) than for the largest party to win a majority of seats in the House of Commons (27%), while similarly tending to favour having a greater number of smaller parties (44%) than a system with two larger main parties (27%).

Indeed, Britons are fairly open to smaller parties, with 53% believing that winning a small number of votes should entitle you to at least a small number of seats, as happens under some PR systems, while just 19% believe such parties should not win any seats, as is intended under FPTP.

Nonetheless, Britons are divided 37% to 38% over whether they prefer single-party government or coalition government, as well as splitting 41% to 44% on whether they would rather cast a vote for just a single candidate or be able to rank multiple candidates.

And there is a clear lead for the status quo when it comes to constituencies. Nearly half of Britons (45%) would prefer to have just a single local MP, as they currently have under FPTP, compared to just 29% who would rather have multiple MPs from different parties in constituencies covering larger areas, as would be necessary under most PR systems.

Do Britons support shifting to proportional representation? | YouGov

Half of Britons support introducing proportional representation, but retaining local MPs remains a sticking point

I don’t know about PR. They all say how good it is until there’s a win under FPTP and then it’s time to think all over again. Once upon a time the Liberals did win such majorities. It may shortly be that the Conservatives now join them as an ancient but minority party.

Jenrick seems to think fare dodging is limited to ‘Khan’s London’.

of course one way to reduce fare dodging is to increase staffing levels. I don’t remember the Conservatives being fans of that.

It was a previous Mayor who reduced staffing levels at London Underground stations, and closed ticket offices despite a manifesto pledge not to do so.

Yes, Boris Johnson.

DuncinToffee · 30/05/2025 19:21

Somehow it always dates back to the previous Mayor....

Yes a horrible article.

However the Telegraph has papers to sell. They are in decline. If the traditional Conservative style doesn’t attract readers then they will “Reform” themselves. They can’t admit their competition is GB News. But it is.

I’ve read the Telegraph daily for years - they are chasing the market.

No surprise that Farage is sharing the article on his social media.

bombastix · 31/05/2025 11:10

I suspect it’s less “disgusted of Tunbridge Wells” and aiming to be a lot more “filthy foreigners on the take”.

However Rayner made a point about benefits sums being paid to non UK nationals when she was discussing benefit cuts and their necessity. We can’t pretend that this something Labour hasn’t noticed for itself.

Notonthestairs · 31/05/2025 11:20

Telegraph was bought by a US private equity firm this month and I suspect is under greater pressure to boost sales. As you say chasing the GBnews viewer.

Yep. But why is it suddenly an issue for Labour? Never mentioned in the 14 years they were in opposition. Nor in their manifesto.

They need to get out of the gutter and stop chasing the Reform vote.

bombastix · 31/05/2025 11:32

Is it suddenly an issue? Assuming the figures are correct, then this is a large sum being paid out.

Rayner I assume made the point that benefit cuts could be re-examined if cuts were made to non UK nationals only. She would be right on that one. It would be discrimination in law, and so it’s not really something Labour can do unless it is prepared to legislate.

This Labour government just has a huge issue because there is no money for public spending and their manifesto binds them on tax. They are looking for cuts to meet that issue and even Labour is not immune to some nationalism. Rayner is old left. She may not share ideas about diversity or the benefits that are often assumed about Labour.

in fact I think we should stop assuming that Labour are like that.
