Minister for Brexit on your CV is probably not very helpful

You’re absolutely obsessed with Brexit. I can’t imagine what that feels like.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2025 09:31

Give it a rest derxa, I don't know what your issue with me is but it is wearing.

Or one that isn't affecting us currently.

I agree it was a disaster. I’m an optimist though and things have a way of working out. What’s the point of living in the past.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2025 09:49

It doesn't have to remain a disaster - thats the bloody point.

We do have some agency.
But it would certainly suit a lot of people to breeze over it.

Wanting and supporting the improvements being made by the current government re our trade with the EU is not "living in the past'.

And I have very little sympathy for former MPs who for the most part cheered on the excesses of the Tories. Let them eat cake on NMW and learn what life is like for ordinary people.

I agree with some of the adjustments made by this government. But I mainly think Ursula and her mates are playing Keir like a fiddle.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2025 10:02

We are now in a better position than we were in under the last Conservative government.

And in a better position to change more elements in the future.

Saucery · 28/05/2025 10:03

Being voted out is part and parcel of being an MP. Plan for your own financial future, be the best representative for your constituents you can possibly be and don’t whine when the gravy train hits the buffers.

There are a lot of sore Tories because the deal that Keir has received is almost identical to the one offered to May and rejected by Johnson. The Conservatives could have done this deal. Instead they destroyed themselves for nothing, lost the election post Brexit, and find they are pariah people professionally.

I mean they literally set fire to their links with the City and business who no longer regard them as reliable or intelligent. So no, not so many nice jobs for them. The party’s name is mud

PandoraSocks · 28/05/2025 10:07

Perhaps MPs could be awarded the same terms as the Civil Service compulsory redundancy terms? One month for every year of service, capped at 12 months.

bombastix · 28/05/2025 10:08

But hey, wasn’t it fun while it lasted? They just became decadent and stupid. My view is that the Tories are toast.

Anyone who had a brain resigned before the election and got a job.

Those people are quite successful. I wonder why?

A lot of the more venal ones will join Reform. Look at Andrea Jenkins. Chucked out at the last election and now she’s a mayor. I suppose you have to have the hide of a rhinoceros.

bombastix · 28/05/2025 10:23

I just cannot imagine the stupidity. Let’s say you want a nice City job where you get a good salary. They won’t ever want you because if you’ve been polarizing, you can’t influence the current government and don’t show any skill in using the system to achieve influence. That’s why business want ex politicians. It’s also why these MPs cannot secure the kind of roles that once would have been a given. I do notice that some “One Nation” MPs have managed just fine. Funny that.

As for Andrea Jenkins, she carries on doesn’t she? Cleverer perhaps as a politician than many of her former colleagues

You’re absolutely obsessed with Brexit. I can’t imagine what that feels like.

Well considering it was the unicorn utopia which offered up a worse economy and a political standoff I’m pretty sure most people are “obsessed” with it.

it’s our lives it’s affected.

and I was of the few (only?!) person here who voted leave but then voted Tory to “get Brexit done”. I thought we were going to have our lives improved by the promises of trade deals.

Turns out people can be very wrong!

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for an answer...

bombastix · 28/05/2025 10:32

I had a chat with my dad re this as he remarked that the Tories seemed be stupid, which he thought was new (he’s in his 80s and used to the Rolls Royce entitlement and born to rule Tories).

The only disagreement between us was that it was new. I think it’s been there the moment they let Johnson in and let him remove any quality MP from the Cabinet.

Strangely I think it’s personal for Keir Starmer. His government is unpopular and has become so very rapidly. He finds a relief from this disapproval in the EU. Essentially he shares many beliefs with Ursula v d L, Tusk and Macron. They all seem to be excessively pally. Starmer is a remainer and has to pretend he’s not at home.

Really not mean to be a personal insult or criticism but how could you trust politicians like John Redwood, Priti Patel and Rees Mogg ? The one thing that would put me off voting for it was the support of MPs like them.

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2025 10:41

It's funny sometimes reading about you guys and your parents . Having been brought up in Glasgow literally everyone thought the Tories were permanently stupid! So I never had to run the gamut of Tory parenting!

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2025 10:43

weird , I am trying to make sense of what you just said. Did you mean you voted Leave? It's your 'but' that makes no sense in your sentence.

I was of the few (only?!) person here who voted leave but then voted Tory to “get Brexit done”.
