30 min commute for this wage?

I am being made redundant and have a job I can apply for but I’m wondering if it’s worth it for the drive
currently earn 27k WFH
new job would be 29k but hours are 8am - 6pm with a 30 min drive each way
it’s also a notorious motorway for constant accidents!

jobs either seem to be min wage or 40k stuff I’m not qualified for so I’m struggling a bit

30 mins is fine for a commute

amber763 · 19/05/2025 14:18

30 mins is absolutely fine. It's a short commute! Do you think it's too long? People who take public transport to work will likely have longer.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/05/2025 14:22

30 mins sounds like a luxuriously short commute to me

I have always had a short commute, just more bothered that the motorway closes nearly weekly and adding that on to 8-6 as well

sorry that probably sounds a bit wimp like but I have a disability causing fatigue and 50hrs work plus the 1hr daily commute which is more likely to be 2hrs for 29k is maybe putting me off a bit?

I can’t use public transport due to my disability

30 min commute is probably below average. If you get it you can still look for something else.

NotDonna · 19/05/2025 14:23

My DD has been commuting 1hr 20 mins each way every day for 18 months. For a similar salary to yours. That IS too much!! She’s trying to find affordable rental nearer. 30 mins is VERY normal. Most commute 45-60 mins to London daily. So I’d take the job yes. Esp if I’d be unemployed otherwise.

I physically couldn’t do that due to the fatigue Sad

I’m wondering if I’m better off on min wage just for the fact I can find something closer with shorter hours but then it means less money
argh

30min is nothing, even with your context. Even totting it up to an hour because it’s twice a day it’s really minor as commutes go.

Loveduppenguin · 19/05/2025 14:26

Would there be an option to work from home a few days a week after a while?

No, it has to be office based

Ah that’s a bummer. Ask scale of commute that’s not a bad commute really.

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 19/05/2025 14:30

Probably better off on a 27k job that’s work from home as you will probably be further out of pocket once you pay petrol for the year.

Yeah I’m probably not phrasing it right
for 50hrs a week I could look for min wage with a much less commute so no real fuel costs and not as long in the car

I’m so pissed off about the redundancy, I have adjustments at my job and my health issues mean I struggle working long hours

TryingToStayAwake88 · 19/05/2025 14:35

Calculate how much the commute will take, subtract from take home pay to see how much better you would be financially than a mw job. If it's close then consider if losing that time would be worth it for you

houseofstark · 19/05/2025 14:44

I don’t think the commute is bad but I wouldn’t want to work 8-6. What are your current working hours?

40hrs usually 8.30-5
i struggle with 40hrs but I’m not finding any WFH or lesss hours

Agree!! It’s ridiculous for someone with no issues. I’m certainly not suggesting this is acceptable. Can you use public transport then at least you’re not concentrating on traffic etc, maybe less tiring?

This is why disabled people struggle to work. So sorry you’re in this position op.

CandidHedgehog · 19/05/2025 14:49

Also, a 50 hour week for £29,000 plus an hour’s commute (30 minutes each way) might well mean a NMW of 37.5 hours per week at £12.21 doesn’t leave you that much worse off (£480.375 per week for the NMW job, £557.69 for the other job).

In fact, the 50 hours a week for £29,000 comes up at £11.15 per hour which is below NMW. I didn’t think that was legal.

You might well be better off financially taking the NMW job and either doing overtime or getting a Saturday / evening job. Probably less tiring, too.

If it was say 8-4 with a 30 min commute I wouldn’t blink but it’s adding 10hrs to my working week already and then the commute on top of that

there is only me to pay the bills so no option but to work

TheNightingalesStarling · 19/05/2025 14:54

Is it definitely 5 days not 4?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/05/2025 14:54

I think it’s a good idea to work out how much it will actually effect your take home pay. I was contemplating a move for an extra 5k and after tax and NI and pension it only worked out to an extra 250 a month from that you’ve got to deduct petrol / additional wear and tear on the car for the longer commute plus put a value on your time. I decided not to go for it in the end as I’d only be about £30 a week better off after petrol but I’d of lost nearly 8 hours a week on the drive.

I’ve worked it out including breaks/lunches and it is within min wage - just!

I think the day probably factors in an unpaid hour for breaks / lunch which would bring it up to 12.39ph which over min wage but probably not be enough to get op to commute.
