30 min commute for this wage?

I am being made redundant and have a job I can apply for but I’m wondering if it’s worth it for the drive
currently earn 27k WFH
new job would be 29k but hours are 8am - 6pm with a 30 min drive each way
it’s also a notorious motorway for constant accidents!

jobs either seem to be min wage or 40k stuff I’m not qualified for so I’m struggling a bit

30 minutes is nothing. My DD had a hour commune to school! You can do it! And being in work is a better platform to find a better job.

You can’t compare a school day with a 10hr working shift!

I have always had a short commute, just more bothered that the motorway closes nearly weekly and adding that on to 8-6 as well

sorry that probably sounds a bit wimp like but I have a disability causing fatigue and 50hrs work plus the 1hr daily commute which is more likely to be 2hrs for 29k is maybe putting me off a bit?

I can’t use public transport due to my disability

That is a poor 18p per hour over minimum wage. 8-6 with an hours lunch, 9 hrs per day x 5 days = 45 hours per week. 29k / 52 weeks / 45 hours is 12.39 per hour. Find something closer for minimum wage, especially with a nightmare motorway involved. If you still want to go for it work out how much extra you will be spending on fuel before you accept.

Try applying for the better jobs as you never know. Having a good work ethic and being willing to learn can be rare characteristics.

I’d stick with the WFH job

OP has stated they are being made redundant from their current job

This is below minimum wage. 29,000/52/50 =11.154

It's not a 50 hour week though - there will be unpaid breaks within the 10 hour day. A 50 hour working week would break Working Time regulations.

There may be a tax relief for the commute. Ask them to add travel expenses as part of package to reduce tax costs.

Get skilled up. Go to college or UNI to get higher pay. I did. My annual income has jumped nearly 400% in 5 years as a result of the education.

Train as a bus driver. Some companies pay for the training and you will always have a job to fall back on... even when retired.

TheRhodesian · 27/05/2025 10:44

50 hrs work? Nah. Can't be right. That's below minimum wage. I'd report the company to HMRC. You are allowed a reasonable adjustment due to disability at no penalty to you. Work from home 3 days a week.

its not a job that can be done from home and I’ve already been to college and to university, I can’t afford to go again at 40+

I’ve turned it down now anyway after doing the drive and it ending up being much longer than expected at that time of day

Why not try it? If it's too much for you then apply for closer jobs at lower wage if necessary.

rockstarshoes · 27/05/2025 15:34

Seriously I’d look at the HMRC one! There will be opportunities to WFH & once you’re in the Civil Service loads more opportunities to move roles & progress!
you might have to take a short- term hit but loads better than working 50 hours per week!

I can’t take the hit as there is nothing to cut back on at all, I’m already paying a mortgage and running a car and doing everything on 27k so my budget is to the bone
HMRC is a 2k drop

(changed figures slightly for anon reasons but it’s definitely 2k drop and I’m guessing after pension is taken it’ll be more)

No WFH available
I’ve found one that’s part WFH but min wage and PT 35 hours meaning I would need a second job

35 hours = 7 hours a day, ie 9-5 ... that's not part time!

Sorry I probably phrased that wrong. In the industry/job I’m currently in anything below 40hrs is PT

I agree with you. I’ve WFH in past role and was made redundant. 8am til 6pm is a ridiculously long day and rather unnecessary. I would be concerned why they even operate their business that? May have a high staff turnover. Guess you have an hour for lunch? Also unnecessary in this day n age, I always ask for 30mins and say id rather leave 30mins earlier. Totally feel the same about the motorway though!! Dangerous, many bad drivers now, and you don’t need the added stress or worry of that after a 10hour day nahhhh. Sack it off. Half our commute is ok if you’re working a 7.5 hour day. I say this to all recruiters-I am only prepared to work a 37.5 hour week

Theroadt · 19/05/2025 19:37

This is an odd thread tbh. Either you need the income and this is the best of the bunch (and 30 mins is a short commute for most) or you don’t need it and keep looking for the perfect job on your doorstep. However, most employers are moving away from 100% wfh so you need to factor some kind of commute in.

No I think you mean You find it odd. And No WFH/Hybrid is still going strong is decent companies and forward thinking businesses. I have experienced both and the poorer run companies, slave drivers and archaics are the ones trying to return to office so they’re micro and middle managers have a job

I came back to update

I was offered the 8-6 job and turned it down and have accepted an 8-4 (average 40hrs a week) job with a 20 min commute for 28k with a 4K bonus
same motorway but shorter drive

Good update - Maybe never know as you settle in WFH will be allowed and also you can still look for another job that is full Remote

user1492757084 · 24/06/2025 09:42

Take the job.

Only quit if you have another.

EatSleepDreamRepeat · 24/06/2025 13:24

Congratulations

DelphiniumDoreen · 24/06/2025 16:42

Well done!

stayathomer · 24/06/2025 16:51

Edited to add congrats! Just saw update!

All the people saying 30 minutes is nothing, I think the op asked the wrong question unless you all also work 8-6 5 days a week (which is a huge amount of hours op especially with a disability). If you can find anything even min wage (since that’s a min wage job) close to you go for that instead definitely

10 hour shifts? That would bother me more than the commute! Is it an office job or something else? Why isn’t it 9-5 or similar?

Motor trade, fairly standard shifts in the industry
