30 min commute for this wage?

I am being made redundant and have a job I can apply for but I’m wondering if it’s worth it for the drive
currently earn 27k WFH
new job would be 29k but hours are 8am - 6pm with a 30 min drive each way
it’s also a notorious motorway for constant accidents!

jobs either seem to be min wage or 40k stuff I’m not qualified for so I’m struggling a bit

Objectively it's not a long commute, but that's irrelevant if it's too long for you due to your health.

What would the impact be on you if you took it whilst you continued to look for something better? If you think you could manage it for a few months, I'd be tempted to take it and keep looking for something closer/with better hours. If it's going to make you ill, I'd look at whether you can afford to take a lower wage for a better work life balance.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do Flowers

8-6 with a one-hour break is 45 hours per week.

It works out at approximately the minimum wage.

I have always had a short commute, just more bothered that the motorway closes nearly weekly and adding that on to 8-6 as well

sorry that probably sounds a bit wimp like but I have a disability causing fatigue and 50hrs work plus the 1hr daily commute which is more likely to be 2hrs for 29k is maybe putting me off a bit?

I can’t use public transport due to my disability

How are you calculating 8-6 as 50 hours work per week? How many days are you working? It won’t be 50 hours if it’s only 5 days as you’ll have breaks.

If the commute is 30 minutes each way that won’t be 2hrs a day either. There won’t be accidents every single day.

assuming the 8-6 is only four days a week? so three day weekend

No its 5 days mon - Fri or if you work the weekend then it’ll be 4 days 8-6 then sat and sun mornings

Yeah I’ve rounded it, I didn’t want to put the exact wage and have someone find the job location but it’s definitely min wage when I’ve put it in a salary calculator

Calculate how much the commute will take, subtract from take home pay to see how much better you would be financially than a mw job. If it's close then consider if losing that time would be worth it for you

Presumably this job is better as a potential step up later on than a minimum wage job though.

Op A 30 minute commute is pretty good to be honest.
Would they let you do 7-5 so at least you'd miss the traffic first thing in the morn?

No, it has to be opening hours so 8-6 and then weekends are 8-1 sat and sun

I would apply for the job and see what happens first … even if you get it, you don’t have to take it. You are trying to make a decision about something that may not even be an option yet.

WorthyBlueHare · 19/05/2025 22:42

There’s nothing in it money wise, £2k with inconvenience that means you’ll spend extra money to increase your convenience. Which would bring you most joy? Think also about the career progression - is staying where you are for longer and cementing knowledge/achieving well there better or worse than the new challenge, in terms of your chances at getting future jobs you find interesting and/or pay better?

caringcarer · 19/05/2025 22:43

I commited an hour getting to work only 20 miles away for years. You sound precious if you think.a 30 mins commute is to long.

I’m not precious, I’ve worked since I was 13 and able to get a work permit and never been without a job
I have multiple health conditions which cause fatigue. Currently I do 40hrs WFH and have to sleep after it and am wondering how the fuck I’m going to cope with a commute

I physically couldn’t do that due to the fatigue Sad

I’m wondering if I’m better off on min wage just for the fact I can find something closer with shorter hours but then it means less money
argh

OP, are you aware of Access to Work? Can help with transport costs etc for people with health conditions to help them stay in work

beAsensible1 · 19/05/2025 22:53

I actually don’t think it’s worth it for £2 extra

faffing about at rush hour on the motor way twice a day. Sounds like nightmare and just not enough for the effort

that’s about 40 a week on petrol if not more x 50ish weeks of work?

you break even, unless it’s a more senior role that will increase your overall prospects or you can get them down to hybrid.

Jk987 · 19/05/2025 23:01

8-6, that’s 10 hour days! Regardless of the commute I wouldn’t be doing that! Do you get a lunch hour even?

TheShiningCarpet · 19/05/2025 23:04

but dont just think of this job - think about the next one, will doing this also help you move up the ladder or into a better role ? Even if you do it for six months....it doesnt have to be forever. I took a job with a four hour commute door to door (thats for both ways), I hate it and i dont have to do it every day thank god but i am aware that there are slim pickings sometimes and even with my own physical and mental challenges including fatigue, i had to do it. This is the season of tough commute. But it wont always be that way.

redundant2 · 19/05/2025 23:10

Right I’m going to regroup over the next week and write down deal breakers, work out what commute for what salary I’m ok with, what hours etc
I think realistically I’m looking for 40hrs max and not less money than I am on now

I travel up to 80 minutes each way across London. I’d love a 30 minute commute!

Redflagsabounded · 20/05/2025 07:16

Hi OP, start looking on civilservicejobs too. Tend to be more flexible/supportive employers, good benefits, plenty of vacancies.

Redflagsabounded · 20/05/2025 07:23

Eg there's currently a Relationship Manager role in NE paying £30k looking for experience of customer service 😀

It depends what you need to achieve. I took a highly paying job that was a pain in the arse for six months in order to get a Mortgage the moment the ink was dry. I took a much smaller role closer to home.
You have to play the game to achieve your aims, what are they?
