30 min commute for this wage?

redundant2 · 19/05/2025 14:16

I am being made redundant and have a job I can apply for but I’m wondering if it’s worth it for the drive
currently earn 27k WFH
new job would be 29k but hours are 8am - 6pm with a 30 min drive each way
it’s also a notorious motorway for constant accidents!

jobs either seem to be min wage or 40k stuff I’m not qualified for so I’m struggling a bit

Is it the M62?

You couldn’t pay me enough for that road…

Theroadt · 19/05/2025 19:37

This is an odd thread tbh. Either you need the income and this is the best of the bunch (and 30 mins is a short commute for most) or you don’t need it and keep looking for the perfect job on your doorstep. However, most employers are moving away from 100% wfh so you need to factor some kind of commute in.

I will need the income but I’m not yet redundant so I do have a bit of time

I think maybe I phrased it wrong, I’m just surprised at the hours, experience etc etc that places are wanting for very low wages

Can you do a test run and see how you get on? Appreciate not easy with a current role!

Yes I’m sorry - I certainly didn’t mean to sound snippy. Just that there have been times I’ve taken a job just to pay the mortgage (lower salary, longer hours, longer commute) until I could find something better. Other times I’ve been able to hold on for the right mix. Only you can judge if the hours/pay/commute mix doesn’t work for you. Good luck!

Oh if I can’t find anything I’ll do whatever the fuck I need to, I’ve worked in care, bar work etc before
but now I am in a position where I can’t take a pay cut, my disability means I could do without being exposed to the general public Grin and companies seem to want a million hours and qualifications for fuck all money
just frustrated

did you say you’re North west? If you’re local to Liverpool it would be worth looking for jobs at Home office or DWP , I’m on £30k for 32hrs a weeks and that’s hybrid 40% from home,

they’re also accommodating to people with disabilities and far more flexible.
recruitment process is long winded but it’s worth trying

AlphaApple · 19/05/2025 20:20

OP there are remote working call centre type jobs. Have you found those?

Not local annoyingly as that would have been great!
I will keep looking - I’m using indeed, Glassdoor, total jobs and LinkedIn if anyone has any other recommendations
My manager has been brutal with my CV so that’s all sorted

No dependants and just me
I applied for a supervisor position but haven’t heard back. Most want experience but I can’t get experience without the job

Have you tried any of the local authorities or housing associations. That kind of background could be a good fit for anywhere that has a contact centre, complaints, etc. Lots of those kind of council type organisations do.

Are you near a hospital? Are they recruiting for PALS? GP receptionist? They will be listed on the NHS website. Not wfh but possibly closer to home.

If by NW you mean Greater Manchester and the dreaded M60, the website you need for council jobs is greater jobs

I used to commute a route on the M60 that "should" take 30 mins but in the mornings especially was 1.5 hours or more.

EatSleepDreamRepeat · 19/05/2025 20:34

Just to add housing associations you will need to find their own websites. Google Whatever town you are in eg - Housing Associations in Rochdale and then look at the individual websites

I did have a look at one but it was a pay cut again which I really can’t afford
Think I’m going to take a weeks break from looking as I’m frustrated, annoyed about the redundancy, feel burned out and pissed off I am 41 and not good enough to get the wage I want and angry at my body for being so shit
realistically I can’t take below what I get now as I’m already in debt and struggling (mortgage to pay)

I have always had a short commute, just more bothered that the motorway closes nearly weekly and adding that on to 8-6 as well

sorry that probably sounds a bit wimp like but I have a disability causing fatigue and 50hrs work plus the 1hr daily commute which is more likely to be 2hrs for 29k is maybe putting me off a bit?

I can’t use public transport due to my disability

Sorry misread post and can't delete.

mondaytosunday · 19/05/2025 20:39

30 minutes is nothing. My DD had a hour commune to school! You can do it! And being in work is a better platform to find a better job.

iseethembloom · 19/05/2025 20:40

8-6 is a punishingly long day. I assume this includes the commute? Is it five days a week?

I’m IN work, I’m not yet redundant. Does she have health conditions with fatigue?

No, that’s the working hours so commute on top
yes 5 days a week

DancingDucks · 19/05/2025 20:45

30 mins isn't a long commute imo.

DancingDucks · 19/05/2025 20:46

Sorry OP just saw your updates. 8 - 6 is actually a pretty long day with another hour on top.

redundant2 · 19/05/2025 20:47

My colleague has messaged me (she’s much younger) saying realistically we are going to have to accept a pay cut as we are well paid
Can’t cut anything else, it’s already to the bone with no savings or fun stuff. I know 27k seems decent but it’s not quite enough as a solo wage

i I think I’m taking myself off to bed and giving myself a week off looking as I’m just getting more grouchy! I’ve got my CV with recruitment agencies as well

The commute isn't bad
The 8 til 6 is though. Assuming an hour for lunch, it's still a 45 hr week. Is it minimum wage? £12.39 an hour?

Yeah it works out as min wage when I’ve calculated breaks and lunch
theres also weekend working but that’s the same amount of hours as you would get the time back during the week (Sat and sun mornings every 3 weeks)

OP posts:
sarah419 · 19/05/2025 21:36

assuming the 8-6 is only four days a week? so three day weekend
