Popular songs you actually don’t like

Neighbours a few doors away have been out in the garden, having a bbq and playing music.
Earlier, they played ‘Sweet Caroline’ on loop 4 times 🤪
I remember reading somewhere (maybe on MN?!) that some people can’t stand this song.
Personally, I don’t mind it, but maybe 4 times is a bit much!.

Are you a fan?
What other songs which are deemed “popular” but actually grates on your nerves?
Mine are Seal’s Kiss From a Rose, The B-52s Love Shack and Fairground Attraction’s Perfect - just for starters!

@SerafinasGoose haha, I was like “yes, yes, hard agree, we are kindred spirits”.

And then I read your sweeping statement about Erasure. And felt cheated 😂. I love a blast up the M6 listening to A Little Resepct. It’s a visceral jerk back to my teenage years recording the top ten on my Sony ghetto blaster.

ConnieHeart · 18/05/2025 20:33

DelboytrottersDnecklace agree with Wake Me Up When September Ends. Our local radio station massively overplayed it for about a year after it was released. I also hate anything by Oasis apart from Importance of Being Idle. I am completely baffled as to how they're so popular. I don't mind their solo stuff though

Mothersdayscroll · 18/05/2025 20:33

The tide is high - Blondie ( I don't hate blondie just this song)

I don't think this is correct. Are you thinking of Red Red Wine?

Yes, apologies - well spotted!

That was indeed meant to be a response to the pp who disliked Red Red Wine.

It's probably just my fat fingers quoting the wrong post, but I've noticed it happening quite a bit with other posters too over the last few days - so it may be a site issue.

ConnieHeart · 18/05/2025 20:35

I think Blondie are over hyped but I hate Rapture in particular, oh and Atomic.

BelieveYouCan · 18/05/2025 20:35

Anything by The Beautiful South or Pet Shop Boys.

GinToBegin · 18/05/2025 20:36

You’re Beautiful (though James Blunt is a hoot)
imagine
Hey Jude
Despicito (sp?)
Without You
Pride (in the name of love) / With or Without You
Back for Good / Never Forget
Tubthumping
Just Like a Woman / Just the Way You Are

mrschocolatte · 18/05/2025 20:38

Sex on Fire Kings of Leon. I detest this song with every fibre of my being.

I didn’t think I could hate the song any more than I did, then Atomic Kitten covered it. Just awful.

Ginlovingmumof4 · 18/05/2025 20:40

Careless Whisper by George Michael. Dull, dull, dull!

They also murdered one of my fave songs of all time, Eternal Flame

xsquared · 18/05/2025 20:45

Anything by ABBA. I don't know why they are so popular!
Anything by Beautiful South - especially if Paul Heaton is leading it. His voice is irritating and nasally!

Don't you want me baby by the Human League. Just so overplayed and one of those songs that people immediately think of when they think of the 80s, when there are so many other better songs. Mind you, I do like other songs they have done like Human, and I like Paul Oakey and Giorgio Moroder's Together in Electric Dreams.

Agree on the Human League. I don't mind ABBA, but they are one of those bands which for some reason don't bear replaying too often, at least for me.

I've heard Heaton sing live - couldn't even tell you the context now it was so long ago - and he did sound fantastic. But that song about the pencil case with all the girls' names on it? Eurch! Fail.

Meadowflower2023 · 18/05/2025 20:50

Also hate Love Shack.
Sweet Caroline annoys me because it’s so over played too.
Most ABBA songs.
Don’t you want me by Human League
Gold by Spandau Ballet
All that she wants by Ace of Base
CeeLo Green songs arrggghhhh

FKAT · 18/05/2025 20:51

Thinking of two offshoots of this thread:

Songs That You Don't Hate But Never Need to Hear Again (Brightside, Don't Look Back In Anger, I Will Survive etc)

and

Popular Bands Whose Appeal Has Bypassed You (Blondie, Deacon Blue, etc)

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 18/05/2025 20:52

Another vote for Bohemian Rhapsody - hated it in 1975, hate it even more now. Also Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks - unspeakably bland, turgid pap.

JMSA · 18/05/2025 20:52

The Young at Heart song with the screechy violins.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 18/05/2025 20:53

BelieveYouCan · 18/05/2025 20:35

Anything by The Beautiful South or Pet Shop Boys.

I don't get the love for the PSB. Their style is quite meh and formulaic and, whilst perfectly fine, Neil's voice is rather dull and emotionless.

The only exception I make is What Have I Done To Deserve This - because of the parts by the wonderful Dusty!

Hell yeah, I love Erasure.

Run To The Sun!

SherlocksHome · 18/05/2025 20:56

Also hate Love Shack. Add to that Shiny Happy People by REM and anything by Bob Marley.

LlynTegid · 18/05/2025 20:58

ConnieHeart · 18/05/2025 20:44

I don't think Atomic Kitten and a few other of the awful groups of that era should be recognised as music. They should be expunged from the top 40 charts for starters.

Without You was a beautiful sad, plaintive song of lost love when sung by Harry Nilsson - it completely defeated the point of it when Mariah made it into a belting power ballad.

See also I Will Always Love You (Dolly vs Whitney) and Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson vs Pet Shop Boys).

It's like the equivalent of Steps doing a big energetic party banger version of Old Shep Grin

SchnizelVonKrumm · 18/05/2025 20:59

I clicked on the thread to comment Sweet Caroline.

I can’t believe someone has said Hotel California. I know some people must hate it as it’s impossible for everyone to like every song, but I’ve never actually heard anyone say they hate it. If I could only listen to one song forever, it would be that one, it’s so good. It’s hard to believe it’s nearly 50 years old. 😳
